The hidden wisdom of investing legends: 5 powerful lessons for a prosperous life
The former Magellan Fund manager championed investing in what you know. Lynch discovered investment opportunities through everyday experiences, investing in Dunkin' Donuts after being impressed by their coffee and in The Gap after observing its popularity with teenagers while shopping with his daughters.
Perhaps his most profound lesson came from his decision to retire at 46 to prioritise family, noting: 'When the operas outnumber the football games three to zero, you know there is something wrong with your life.' Lynch's actionable investment wisdom:
Pay attention to products and services you personally use and understand. Your everyday consumer experiences can identify promising investments before Wall Street notices them, giving you an edge through practical knowledge. Jack Bogle: the champion of everyday investors
The founder of Vanguard revolutionised investing through a surprisingly counterintuitive approach: instead of trying to beat the market, he advocated joining it through low-cost index funds. Though this strategy earned him industry adversaries, Bogle remained steadfast, believing that ordinary investors deserved fair treatment and reasonable fees.
His personal philosophy centred on simplicity, integrity and fair dealing. 'The shortest route to top quartile performance is to be in the bottom quartile of expenses,' he famously noted. Even after building Vanguard into a financial powerhouse, Bogle maintained modest personal habits and a steadfast moral compass, believing that character and contribution mattered more than personal wealth. Bogle's actionable investment wisdom:
Consider whether active management truly adds value to your portfolio versus low-cost index funds. By minimising fees and avoiding excessive trading, you preserve more of your returns while reducing stress and decision fatigue. Ray Dalio: principles and inner clarity
The founder of Bridgewater Associates attributes significant success to an unexpected practice: transcendental meditation. For decades, Dalio has meditated daily, crediting the practice with improving concentration, enhancing creativity and providing mental clarity for navigating market complexities.
His book Principles also emphasises radical transparency and facing reality head-on, even when it's uncomfortable. The investing legend's formula—Pain + Reflection = Progress—encourages viewing mistakes as valuable learning opportunities rather than failures. His 'All-Weather Portfolio' concept, designed to perform across various economic environments, reflects this balanced approach to life and investing. Dalio's actionable investment wisdom:
Create a personal investment framework that can withstand different economic conditions. Balance your portfolio across asset classes that perform well in varying environments—growth, inflation, deflation and recession—rather than trying to predict which scenario will occur. Geraldine Weiss: breaking Wall Street's glass ceiling
When Geraldine Weiss entered the investment world in the 1960s, Wall Street firms rejected her applications despite her qualifications, suggesting she become a secretary instead. Undeterred, she pioneered her own dividend-based investment strategy and co-founded the influential Investment Quality Trends newsletter under the gender-neutral signature 'G. Weiss' to avoid bias.
Her groundbreaking dividend yield theory focused on blue-chip companies trading at historically high dividend yields, a strategy that consistently outperformed the market for decades. Weiss pointed out that dividends play a crucial role in total returns, and they're the only part investors can count on with any real consistency.
But Weiss's most profound legacy may be her perseverance in transforming systemic barriers. When finally revealing her gender to subscribers years later, her track record had become so impressive that clients remained loyal, proving that performance transcends prejudice. Weiss's actionable investment wisdom:
Look beyond price fluctuations to dividend consistency when evaluating long-term investments. Companies with strong historical dividend patterns often represent stable businesses with reliable cash flows and shareholder-focused management.
These investing legends share qualities that go beyond financial success: lifelong curiosity, a simple approach and resilience through tough times. While their financial accomplishments are impressive, their most valuable habits like reading, being patient and enjoying life's simple pleasures are things anyone can adopt. As they've proven, true wealth isn't just about money—it's about how you live.

Alonso's Real Madrid start La Liga with fresh energy
Real Madrid, featuring several new signings, approach the new season with fresh hope under recently-appointed coach Xabi Alonso, looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era with "ambitious" football. Former Liverpool and Los Blancos midfielder Alonso saw at the Club World Cup in the United States this summer there is plenty of work to do, as Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Madrid 4-0 in the semi-final. "Things are going to be different... we are starting from scratch," said Alonso, although some of his findings from the tournament will undoubtedly influence his approach. Madrid fans also got their first glimpse of the Basque tactician's plans, and also of England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold. Alonso showed tactical flexibility, utilising both a four-man and three-man defence, whereas his predecessor Ancelotti tended to stick with four at the back and was criticised for not being adaptive enough in games. By contrast Alonso was keen to adjust things during matches if he could, including the positioning of his players, and keen to impress on his squad they must all help defensively and with pressing. "We need and want everyone to defend -- the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively," said Alonso during the tournament, asked specifically about star forwards Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. "They have to know how we want to press, and without that, things will be very complicated," continued Alonso. "Vini, Jude (Bellingham), Fede (Valverde), Kylian, those up front, the defence has to push forward too." Alonso is looking to obtain the balance that Ancelotti failed to achieve last season following Mbappe's arrival from PSG. Although the French superstar struck 43 goals under Ancelotti it was not enough to inspire a Madrid side that finished the season without a major trophy, while Barcelona reclaimed La Liga as part of a domestic treble. Mbappe's illness with a stomach bug kept him out of Madrid's group matches at the Club World Cup, but on his first start was in the destruction by PSG. "We have to be self-critical, but it will also serve us as a guide for where we need to improve," said Alonso. If Alonso can find the formula for Mbappe and Vinicius to work together without sacrificing too much out of possession remains to be seen, while winger Rodrygo Goes does not appear to be part of the coach's plans, playing a bit-part role in the States. - Goodbyes and new faces - Madrid go into the season without Luka Modric in the squad for the first time in over a decade, with the Croatian's experience and quality a big miss for a side lacking some guile in midfield. Los Blancos' hope is for Turkish playmaker Arda Guler to be able to thrive there and become a player who can control the tempo of a game. "The coach is trying to make us have more control of the game, and that's better for me," said Guler. The 20-year-old should get plenty of chances to play at the start of the season with Jude Bellingham sidelined until around mid-October after shoulder surgery to solve a long-running issue. By then new arrival and fellow England international Alexander-Arnold may have established himself in the side. The full-back, who joined from Liverpool before the end of his contract so he could play at the Club World Cup, adds further attacking quality to a Madrid squad brimming with it. Madrid hope Dean Huijsen could help solve some issues at the back, while Alvaro Carreras and Franco Mastantuono also join, with Los Blancos spending over 170 million euros ($200 million) this summer. Dani Carvajal's return from a long-term knee injury is another piece of good news for a Madrid side who need it after their 2024-25 campaign was more noteworthy for the club's attacks on referees than for success on the field. Alonso, who hopes to play an "ambitious" game with "emotion and energy", wants the world to be talking about Real Madrid's football once again. rbs/mw

Morning Bid: Bitcoin joins the risk-on party
A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Ankur Banerjee You know markets are fully risk-on when cryptocurrencies are on a tear, with bitcoin joining global stocks to scale a record peak as the near certainty of U.S. interest rate cuts bolsters risk sentiment and weighs on the dollar. The world's best-known cryptocurrency, bitcoin, has a lot going for it: prospects of lower interest rates, a more favourable regulatory environment, and bullish inflows from institutional investors. Ether too has been on the charge, hovering near its highest since November 2021, becoming the token of choice for those looking for more active returns. In fact, ether is up 42% this year, outstripping the 32% gain for bitcoin. Stocks in Asia were taking a bit of a breather after a blistering rally this week. Japanese shares fell after hitting a record high, while tech-heavy Taiwan and South Korean shares eased after recent highs. Investors are wagering that the Federal Reserve will resume cutting interest rates from next month, with traders starting to even price in odds of a 50 basis points cut after comments from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. "If we'd seen those numbers in May, in June, I suspect we could have had rate cuts in June and July. So that tells me that there's a very good chance of a 50 basis-point rate cut," in September, Bessent said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who has been regularly lambasted by U.S. President Donald Trump, is expected to speak at a central bank research conference in Wyoming next week and the focus will be on his tone on policy path. Bessent also said the Bank of Japan will likely be raising interest rates as it is behind the curve in dealing with the risk of inflation, leading to strong gains in the yen, which stayed around its strongest level in three weeks. Investor focus during European hours will be on a swathe of economic data that will offer a glimpse of the tariff uncertainties and the impact of the duties on the economy. Key developments that could influence markets on Thursday: Economic events: Euro zone flash GDP for Q2, UK prelim GDP for Q2 (By Ankur Banerjee; Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman)
