Mamata Banerjee misusing Lord Jagannath's name for commercial gains: Puri seer

Time of India5 hours ago

The
Puri seer
on Thursday accused the
West Bengal government
of misusing the name of
Lord Jagannath
for commercial gains rather than religious devotion.
Addressing a press conference here, the Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, said, "The West Bengal government is misusing the name of Lord Jagannath for commercial purposes. Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee
does not have the religious sentiment required to name the Digha temple as '
Jagannath Dham
'."
Clarifying his remarks, the 81-year-old seer pointed out that Puri's economy is significantly supported by pilgrims from West Bengal.

"Even Mamata Banerjee knows that Puri thrives because of Bengali devotees. Local servitors, hotels, and traders benefit from this," he said.
"To stop the flow of revenue from Bengal to Odisha, she (Mamata) has constructed a Jagannath Temple in Digha and termed it as 'Dham'. Using the 'Dham' tag is not acceptable," the seer said, adding she thinks Bengali pilgrims will now spend money in Digha.

Replying a question, he also criticised ISKCON for conducting different rituals and festivals of Lord Jagannath, including Rath Yatra, on different dates and days not in accordance with the scriptures.
"ISKCON should stop all this," he demanded.
The West Bengal government inaugurated the Jagannath Temple in Digha on April 30 and named it as 'Jagannath Dham', triggering a row.
The controversy began after the West Bengal government inaugurated a Jagannath temple in Digha on April 30, 2025 and named it 'Jagannath Dham'.
The move triggered sharp objections from Puri's Gajapati Maharaja Divyasingha Deb, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and servitors of the Jagannath Temple, who argue that the 'Dham' designation is traditionally and spiritually reserved for Puri.

'Jagmeet Singh is target of hate because...': Shocking report reveals steep rise in South Asian hate in Canada

Jagmeet Singh has been the target of online hatred toward South Asians which sees a rising trend in Canada, report revealed. Between March 1 and April 20, just before the election in Canada, there were more than 2,300 social media posts on X from Canadian accounts targeting South Asians, and the easy target was former NDP leader Jagmeet Singh . A report titled 'The Rise of Anti-South Asian hate in Canada', conducted by UK-based Institute for Strategic Dialog, revealed the trend of a steep rise in hate toward South Asians in Canada, Toronto Star reported. The report said Canada is being used as an example of what happened when immigration policies led to an "invasion" of South Asian migrants. The report noted that while the study was on social media hatred, the trend is not limited to the online world. "Between 2019 and 2023, police-reported hate crimes against South Asians in Canada increased by more than 200 per cent, according to Statistics Canada," the report said. Analyst at ISD Steven Rai told the Toronto Star that these stereotypes are being promoted by domestic extremists and then getting picked up by people all around the world. Rai said Jagmeet Singh is a target of hate not only because he's a brown man who wears a turban, but also because he's articulate, well-dressed and has reached the upper echelons of Canadian society. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Worst Home Items That People Own, Ranked CleverClassic Undo 'If you're a white supremacist and you're seeing someone like Jagmeet Singh flourish and gain prominence in Canadian politics and in society … a person like that is really seen as a profound threat,' Rai said. Singh entered politics in 2011 after being elected to the Ontario provincial parliament. In 2017, he became the leader of his party, the first person of color to head a federal party in Canada.

'Investigate Zohran Mamdani if he concealed...' Rep Andy Ogles writes to DOJ, says his rap lyrics were problematic

GOP leader urged Pam Bondi to launch an investigation into Zohran Mamdani. Amid Republicans' call to deport Zohran Mamdani, the Socialist candidate who won the Democratic primary for the New York mayor election, Congressman Andy Ogles wrote to the Department of Justice seeking an investigation to be launched into Mamdani's citizenship. The Republican leader doubled that Mamdani may have procured US citizenship through "wilful misrepresentation of concealment of material support for terrorism". Indian-Ugandan-origin Zohran K Mamdani became a US Citizen in 2018, 20 years after he arrived in the country along with his parents. In 2020, he was first elected to the New York Assembly and has been holding public office since then, but his win in the primary has now led to a frenzy among Republicans. Citing Mamdani's past career as a rapper, Ogles said he used words like "Free the Holy Land Five/My guys" in his rap, while The Holy Land Foundation was convicted in 2008 for supporting Hamas. — RepOgles (@RepOgles) "While I understand that some may raise First Amendment concerns about taking legal action based on expressive conduct, such as rap lyrics, speech alone does not preclude accountability where it reasonably suggests underlying conduct relevant to eligibility of naturalization," he wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Langenberg: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo "If an individual publicly glorifies a group convicted of financing terrorism, it is entirely appropriate for federal authorities to inquire whether the individual engaged in non-public forms of support 00 such as organizational affiliation, fundraising, or advocacy -- that would have required disclosure on Form N-400 or during a naturalization interview." "The naturalization process depends on the good-faith disclosure of any affiliation with, or support for, groups that threaten US national security. If Mr Mamdani concealed relevant associations, that concealment may constitute a material misrepresentation sufficient to support denaturalization under federal law," the Republican leader wrote. Naturalization is the legal process through which a non-citizen becomes a US citizen after being a permanent resident for at least five years on fulfilling certain criteria.
