Hong Kong warned of possible low-pressure area near Luzon that may affect region

The Hong Kong Observatory has warned of the possible development of an area of low pressure near Luzon in the Philippines next week that could affect the coast of southeastern China.
The forecaster said on Saturday that the weather would be mainly fine over southern China early next week, with persistently very hot days under the influence of an anticyclone aloft. But conditions were expected to become unstable later in the week.
'An area of low pressure may develop near Luzon within the broad trough of low pressure early to midweek next week, and move in the general direction of the seas east of Taiwan to the vicinity of the coast of southeastern China in the middle and latter parts of next week,' the observatory said.
'Its chance of development over the South China Sea still cannot be ruled out, but remains rather uncertain.'

According to the latest nine-day forecast, temperatures in the coming week are projected to range between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius (73.4 and 91.4 Fahrenheit).

Hong Kong dragon boat racers are in high spirits for Tuen Ng Festival, despite strong winds, with tourism authorities expecting a 14 per cent increase in mainland Chinese visitors compared with previous weekends. 'The weather today is a little windy, which may affect our performance,' said Alan Chan, team captain of the West Kowloon Cultural District's Dragon Boat team. 'Given the wind, there could be big waves when we go out to the sea later, which would affect our results. The waves were not that big when we practised. We will do our best.' The team, joining the competition at Stanley Main Beach for the first time, said they had completed seven two-hour lessons to prepare for the event. While some may view the weather as an obstacle, others believe it can give them a boost.

Hongkongers feel tremors as magnitude 4.3 quake strikes Guangdong's Heyuan
Hongkongers reported feeling tremors as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck about 170km (105.6 miles) north-northeast of the city on Thursday afternoon. Advertisement The Hong Kong Observatory said that it had received more than 10 reports of residents experiencing earth tremors that lasted for several seconds. The forecaster said that its initial analysis 'indicated that an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred at 1.17pm on Thursday in Heyuan, Guangdong'. It added that the quake's epicentre was about 170km north-northeast of Hong Kong. Last November, some residents also reported experiencing minor shaking following a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Taiwan.
