Dr Wee praises Johor govt's efforts in ironing out seven-year delay
JOHOR BARU: After about seven years of delay, the issue of land for the proposed SJKC Kuek Ho Yao here has been resolved with help from the Johor government, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president said the groundbreaking ceremony of the school was held in March 2018 in the presence of then education minister Dr Maszlee Malik, who gave his assurance that the project would go on.
However, the project had been put on hold since then due to various reasons, including land issues.
'Thanks to the constant efforts of the two Johor exco members Ling Tian Soon and Lee Ting Han in following up on the matter, the state government has decided to hand over the piece of land to the Federal Lands Commissioner (PTP), with the specific instruction that it is for the school's use.
'The approval by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has helped to resolve the technical issues regarding the land of the proposed school,' he told reporters after attending a fundraising dinner organised by the Tebrau MCA division here on Friday.
Ling is Yong Peng assemblyman as well as Johor health and environment committee chairman while Lee, who is Paloh assemblyman, is also investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman.
Dr Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, said over the years, about RM12mil in contributions have been collected for the development of SJKC Kuek Ho Yao, proposed to be built in Taman Seri Austin here.
'I would like to thank the state government and Onn Hafiz for helping to iron out the land issues,' he added.
Ling said issues involving land matters were approved in a state executive council meeting last month.
'With support from the Mentri Besar, the piece of land has been specifically marked for SJKC Kuek Ho Yao and handed over to the PTP.
'The Mentri Besar has always been open to assisting matters related to the Chinese and Indian communities, especially when it comes to education, culture and religion,' he added.
Dr Wee also said the proposed development of SJKC Sim Mow Yu in Pasir Gudang, which was also put on hold in 2018, needs to be expedited.
The project was held back as it was said to be too close to the existing SJKC Ladang Grisek, which was originally relocated from Tangkak.
Dr Wee said SJKC Ladang Grisek now has over 700 students and a long waiting list for enrolment, which means there is a need for another school owing to rapid development in the area.
He urged the Education Ministry to work together with the relevant parties to find a formula to resolve the matter.
'Preparations should also be done for the much-awaited Chinese primary school SJKC Tun HS Lee, proposed for Ulu Tiram as the existing SJKC Tiram is also full with a long waiting list for enrolment.
'I remember years ago, parents even had to queue up in the wee hours of the morning for a chance to enrol their children in the school,' he added.
It was reported that in 2017, the government approved the construction of 10 new Chinese primary schools in Johor and Selangor, including SJKC Kuek Ho Yao in Johor Baru; SJKC Sim Mow Yu in Pasir Gudang; SJKC Tun HS Lee in Bandar Cemerlang, Ulu Tiram; SJKC Tan Kah Kee in Iskandar Puteri; and SJKC Cheah Fah in Sunway Iskandar.

Anwar-led talks yield ceasefire, reinforce Asean's role in regional peace

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The agreement on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire reached between Thailand and Cambodia during a special meeting held in Putrajaya on Monday highlighted Asean's role as an effective mechanism in resolving regional disputes, as both parties complied with the bloc's call for order. School of Law and Governance Senior Lecturer at Taylor's University, Dr Julia Roknifard, said the desire of Asean members to avoid interference in the internal affairs of the grouping, prompted by United States President Donald Trump's threats, has encouraged both Thailand and Cambodia to adhere to the principle of Asean centrality. "At first, they (Thailand and Cambodia) didn't seem so open to the idea that Asean can play a role, saying that they would like to negotiate on a bilateral basis between each other. Yet, Asean turned out to be the very mechanism to call them to order, and they complied. "The very fact that the Thai and Cambodian leaders had the confidence to hold the talks in Malaysia with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the host bodes well for Asean as a cooperative organisation,' she said when contacted by Bernama on Monday. Earlier, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid rising tensions along their disputed border, following a special meeting he chaired in Putrajaya on Monday. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting. Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China was an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. According to Roknifard, both Cambodia and Thailand must work towards putting an end to the conflict, preferably for good, as such situations create an opening for external powers that are seeking to further their own interests. "This will be detrimental to the whole region as we will see instability, potentially a refugee crisis and the proliferation of weapons and increased criminal and militant activity. "None of this will be good for Asean, which is already struggling to address the conflict in Myanmar and potential conflicts in the South China Sea,' she added. During the special meeting in Putrajaya on Monday, Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28. The two South-East Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The latest round of hostilities erupted on July 24. Armed clashes have been reported along Cambodia's northern border region, with fatalities on both sides. - Bernama

'As the current Chair of Asean, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure its implementation. 'Malaysia will also consult with fellow Asean member states to participate in the observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to supporting peace on the ground,' he said at a joint press conference. During the joint press conference, Anwar said Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28. 'This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security,' he said. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will hold an informal meeting of regional commanders on July 29 at 7 am, followed by a meeting with Defence Attachés led by the Asean Chair, subject to mutual agreement. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will convene a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug 4 to be hosted by Cambodia. Anwar said Thailand and Cambodia also agreed to resume direct communications between both prime ministers, foreign ministers, and defence ministers. He added that the foreign ministers and defence ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been instructed to develop a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire. 'This mechanism will serve as a foundation for sustained peace and accountability,' he said. Anwar said the meeting reaffirms the shared resolve of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold the principles of international law, peaceful co-existence, and multilateral cooperation in the pursuit of a just and lasting resolution to the situation. He said US President Donald J. Trump has been in contact with the leaders of both countries, urging the leaders to find a peaceful solution to the situation. He added that the Chinese side had kept close contact with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and relevant countries to actively promote dialogue, ceasefire, and restoring peace. 'The presence and collaboration of all parties underscore a shared commitment to peace, dialogue, and regional stability,' he said.
