South Africa is set to benefit from an ambitious R1 trillion infrastructure development initiative aimed at turning the country into a construction site while creating much-needed jobs for the ailing economy.
This was revealed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday while delivering his keynote address at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium.
"South Africa is set to benefit from R1 trillion infrastructure development programme. This is the first time that the country has taken advantage of this which is something that needs to be applauded," Ramaphosa said.
During his address to delegates gathered in Cape Town, Ramaphosa said his administration has committed the country to a transformative infrastructure development programme aimed at setting the country's agenda for economic development. Ramaphosa said only an ambitious infrastructure problem will lead to the desired outcomes as the country seeks to turn itself into a construction site.

"Coordinating an ambitious infrastructure build programme is the only way South Africa will transform its economy. As we seek to transform our country and commit to unlock its full potential, we must place infrastructure at the heart of our development agenda. When we align our efforts, we unlock our efforts, we unlock economies of scale and attract investment. Coordinating thus ambitious effort is not only a necessity but it is also a transformative native opportunity.
Ramaphosa also spoke on the recent trip to Washington following the recent directive by the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi who is being accused of attempting to suspend the country's BBBEE policies in order to benefit Starlink, a company linked to Elon Musk.
Speaking to members of the media on the sidelines of the two-day symposium, Ramaphosa said that low orbit satellite platform is not only driven by Starlink as there are other players locally and internationally, who are interested to participate in the space.
"The promise of a low orbit satellite service and internet connectivity is not new. There are other private companies, even the Chinese and Russian companies including local companies who are interested in tapping into this space. People only focus on one company when there is a plethora of other companies wanting to participate and enter the space. What needs to be done in that space is something that still needs to be properly crafted which is a process that the minister will be able to do through public comments and engagements, "he said.

Starlink triggers black ownership row in South Africa's parliament

South Africa's proposal to amend the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) Act has provoked political outrage, with Elon Musk's Starlink at the forefront. The retaliation responds to Solly Malatsi's (Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies) Friday announcement, recommending they restructure the Electronic Communications Act, which requires 30% of foreign telecoms equity to be black-owned. Malatsi's proposition occurred two days after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the White House, during which Cape Town-based billionaire Johann Rupert requested Musk's technology to tackle the nation's high murder rate. Starlink is yet to operate in South Africa as several neighboring countries grant access. Portfolio committee chair and African National Congress (ANC) member Khusela Diko declared Malatsi's scheme as bending the rules for Musk in a Parliamentary hearing on Tuesday. Moments later, Economic Freedom Fighters member Sixolise Gcilishe said, 'We are not going to accept a situation where our laws are going to be rewritten in Washington.' Meanwhile, ANC's Tshehofatso Chauke saw the policy as a threat to domestic business owners, believing it to offer an 'opportunity for international players to come through the back door' and 'favor big business rather than the interests of South Africans and those who are previously disadvantaged.' Democratic Alliance member Malatsi denied that Starlink played a role in the recommended policy change, stating that the amended framework had been internally discussed since around September of last year. 'We are not attempting to open a special dispensation for Starlink or any other company or an individual… There is no conspiracy on our part with regard to this policy direction,' Malatsi stated. The Minister revealed his intentions were driven by the need to attract investment and tighten business regulations. He believes the policy to be as domestically benefiting as the current BEE requirements, outlining that the reform offers foreign companies two avenues: an equity equivalent scheme or 30% black ownership. 'We advocate for smarter, scalable approaches that deliver meaningful impact and restore policy clarity, consistency, and investor confidence,' South Africa's Association of Communications and Technology said in a statement supporting Malatsi. The proposal has divided South Africa's cabinet, with some calling for legal intervention while others believe it doesn't object to current domestic laws. South Africa's BEE act, introduced after the conclusion of Apartheid, has been infamously criticized by Pretoria-born Starlink CEO Musk, who views the policy as 'openly racist.' Starlink has become increasingly prevalent in Africa – connecting pockets of rural Africa to fast internet – while steering clear of South Africa but operating in neighbors Eswatini, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Other African locations include Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and Benin. South Africa's lawmakers will continue to discuss Malatsi's policy reform, suggesting that, amid the backlash, the door remains narrowly open to restructuring the ICT sector's current black ownership requirements, enabling Starlink to open up shop. MK Party's bid to challenge outcome of 2024 elections postponed

JOHANNESBURG - Proceedings in the Electoral Court will not go ahead on Tuesday in the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party's application challenging the outcome of the 2024 national and provincial elections. The specialist court was scheduled to hear the matter on Tuesday, but the matter has been postponed at the request of the official opposition. This after the party filed a notice to appeal the judgment of the court in an earlier interlocutory application, which dismissed its application to have the court order the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to provide it with access to documents it used before pronouncing on the results of the watershed elections. Over a year has passed since South Africans headed to the polls, and the MK Party argues that the system experienced significant downtime and exhibited grave inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the reported results, undermining the constitutional requirement for free and fair elections. It also wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare a new election date within 90 days from which an order may be made. But the main application has stalled as the party continues its bid to appeal a judgment of the Electoral Court, which dismissed its application to have the IEC relinquish some documents which the party feels would be key in advancing its case. The IEC, however, said it had handed over the documents requested by the party. A new date for the hearing is yet to be determined.
