Forest minister orders audit of tiger deaths in Karnataka over past 5 years

Time of India02-07-2025
Bengaluru: Following the poisoning of five tigers at MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, forest minister Eshwar Khandre on Tuesday ordered an audit of tiger mortality in various tiger reserves (national parks) and wildlife sanctuaries of Karnataka.
Delving into the activities of the wildlife wing, shortly after sending errant forest officials of MM Hills sanctuary on compulsory leave, the minister sought within 10 days a complete review of tiger deaths over the past five and a half years.
As per the All-India Tiger Estimation report of 2022, Karnataka stood second in the country in tiger population, with 563 tigers in five reserves. However, subsequent surveys of big cats reduced these numbers to 408 in 2023 and 393 in 2024.
Further, reports based on the tiger mortality details available with the National Tiger Conservation Authority revealed the death of 82 tigers in Karnataka over the past 5.5 years.
Shocked by the alarming number of tiger deaths in the state, long known for its conservation practices, Khandre has directed both the additional chief secretary of forests, environment and ecology department and the principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) to review the 82 deaths.

Amid doubts over the possible involvement of poachers, the minister also asked the officials to furnish details of tiger mutilation after death to extract body parts.
Noting lapses on the part of foresters, as acknowledged in the MM Hills case, the minister also questioned whether the department has initiated action against any official held guilty in any tiger mortality case, besides demanding details of the conviction rate in unnatural death cases.
Nod for Palar checkpost
After drawing criticism for ignoring the pleas of Chamarajanagar police to set up separate checkposts along the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border at Palar, the forest department has finally given approval to construct a checkpost. TOI had reported on the department's silence over the checkpost plea of the Chamarajanagar SP.
The outgoing chief wildlife warden, Subhash Malkhede, on Monday approved the request to sanction 15x15 land within MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary at the intersection of Palar and Gopinatham near Palar bridge.

UAE: Sharjah Police release actual video showing man hit by car while crossing road to warn public

Image: X In a move to curb rising pedestrian accidents, Sharjah Police have released a striking video that captures a fatal collision between a car and a pedestrian crossing recklessly. This comes as the UAE enforces stricter penalties for jaywalking under a new federal traffic law effective March 29, 2025. The authorities emphasize that unsafe crossing habits threaten lives and urge everyone to prioritize road safety by using designated pedestrian areas. Video highlights fatal consequences of reckless crossing Sharjah Police shared a video showing a tragic accident where a man attempts to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing but does so while the vehicle signal remains green. Despite crossing within the designated area, the pedestrian runs across recklessly, ignoring the traffic signal, which leads to a collision with an oncoming car and the loss of his life. The footage serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed when pedestrians prioritize speed over safety. Authorities stress that many accident reports stem from unsafe crossing behavior, reinforcing the message that even a few seconds saved by rushing can have devastating consequences, not just for the individual but also their families and the wider community. New federal traffic law introduces harsher penalties for Jaywalking The UAE introduced a new federal traffic law on March 29, 2025, imposing tougher penalties on jaywalking to deter dangerous pedestrian behavior. Previously, the fine for jaywalking was Dh400. However, under the new regulation: If jaywalking results in a traffic accident, offenders face fines between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000, and may be subject to imprisonment. For crossing from undesignated areas on roads where the speed limit is 80 km/h or higher, penalties increase sharply: A minimum fine of Dh10,000 Imprisonment of at least three months Or both penalties can be applied. These stringent measures highlight the government's commitment to improving road safety and reducing pedestrian accidents, especially in high-speed zones where risks multiply. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? ₹75 LPA vs ₹14 LPA: Techie wife with 5x salary wonders if she has to pay alimony to govt employee husband

A 34-year-old IT professional has sparked debate online after sharing her marital troubles on Reddit. In a post titled 'Do I have to pay alimony to my husband ?' , the woman revealed that she is considering filing for divorce citing mental cruelty, but is unsure about whether she will be required to pay financial support to her spouse. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency The techie explained that she earns a package of around ₹75 lakh per annum, while her husband, a 35-year-old government employee, makes about ₹1.2 lakh per month (approximately ₹14 lakh per year). She alleged that he has been financially and emotionally abusive throughout their five-year marriage, and that he is now demanding money from her. 'It was a love marriage, but things have gone downhill. I don't think he will agree to a mutual divorce without demanding money, so I may have to contest it on grounds of mental cruelty,' she wrote. She further claimed to have call recordings of her husband verbally abusing her, along with bank records to support her allegations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The woman, who has already moved out of the government quarters where they lived, said she fears for her safety and even asked whether she could file for divorce in a distant state for protection. 'I do want to file for divorce but I'm scared for my life,' she added. Live Events The post triggered a wave of responses from Redditors, many of whom weighed in on the legal and financial aspects. One user noted: 'Yes, he can claim alimony if your income was supporting his lifestyle. However, since he also has a stable government job and housing benefits, the amount could be reduced or possibly dismissed if you weren't funding his lifestyle directly.' Another pointed out the unusual reversal of roles, writing: 'It's rare to see a wife earning five times more than her husband. In such cases, you'd likely be asked to pay alimony. Courts usually calculate between 20–33% of take-home income as maintenance. Assets like property, cars, stocks, and even gold could also come into the picture, so safeguard them in advance.' Some, however, came to her defense. One commenter wrote: 'He's a government employee, which means he's probably earning a lot more through bribes anyway. This seems less about money and more about control. It's sad to see people siding with him just because he's the husband. Stay strong—this can happen to anyone, even to their sisters tomorrow.'
