Simple looking elementary school math problem leaves people stumped - can you get the answer in 30 seconds?

Daily Mail2 days ago

A seemingly straightforward math problem has sparked debate online after leaving social media users confused over the correct answer.
The brain teaser, which appears simple at first glance, has divided the internet with people coming up with different solutions to what appears like a basic math problem.
Twitter user @BholanathDutta shared the math riddle with followers, asking 'Can you solve this #math' alongside an image decorated with colorful flowers.
The post shows a calculation that looks simple: 500 + 450 ÷ 5.
The post has now been viewed more than 3,000 times, with dozens of commenters sharing their answers.
But not everyone agrees on the solution.
The overwhelming majority of respondents believe the answer is 590, with many users showing their working to prove their point.
One user methodically explained their approach.
They wrote: '500 + 450 ÷ 5 = ? 450 ÷ 5 = 90, 500 + 90 = 590.'
Another person reached the same conclusion, posting: '450/5=90, 500+90=590.'
However, not everyone reached the popular answer, as several users offered completely different solutions.
A handful of commenters suggested alternative answers, with one stating the result should be 190.
Another claimed the correct answer was 945.
A couple of users argued the answer should be 19.
The confusion appears to stem from different interpretations of the order of operations.
That is the principle that determines which calculations should be performed first in complex equations.
According to standard math rules, division should be completed before addition, which would support the majority answer of 590.
Problem solvers should use the conventional order of operations - which goes by the acronym PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
Using that, the calculation would indeed be: 450 ÷ 5 = 90, then 500 + 90 = 590.
The viral math puzzle joins a long list of seemingly simple problems that have recently gone viral online.

Police: Threats to Astros' McCullers came from intoxicated bettor

June 2 - The death threats sent to Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. last month were traced back to an intoxicated sports bettor who is based overseas, according to the Houston Police Department. The man was not identified, as police said Monday the case remains open while charges are weighed. But investigators revealed that their suspect had lost money betting on the Astros' game May 10 against the Cincinnati Reds and was "frustrated and inebriated" when he sent threats to McCullers via social media. The suspect was apologetic and asked that his apology be relayed to McCullers and his family, police said. McCullers, 31, revealed that the man threatened to find his kids and "murder them." McCullers has daughters aged 5 and 1. "I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with," McCullers said at the time. "There have been many, many threats over the years aimed at me mostly, and I think actually one or two people from other issues around baseball actually have had to go to jail for things like that," he said. "But I think bringing kids into the equation, threatening to find them or next time they see us in public they're going to stab my kids to death ... things like that are tough to hear as a dad." It was McCullers' second game back after a two-year injury absence due to arm injuries. He gave up seven runs on three hits and three walks while recording just one out in a home loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The Astros hired 24-hour security for McCullers and his family in the wake of the threats. --Field Level Media

Miss England hits out at ‘vindictive' Miss World bosses

Miss England has criticised the organisers of the Miss World pageant as 'vindictive and very bitter' after she left the contest early. Milla Magee, 24, a lifeguard and a keen surfer from Newquay, Cornwall, quit the 2025 Miss World pageant final in Hyderabad, India, after she claimed she and the other finalists were being 'exploited'. Her departure in May led to a war of words with the contest organisers, who have dismissed her claims as a 'desperate attempt to gain attention'. Julia Morley, the organisation's chief executive, reportedly told a Hindu newspaper that Ms Magee left because she 'believed she didn't stand a chance in the competition'. On Saturday, Ms Magee hit back, claiming the pageant purported to be about 'beauty with purpose' but was actually about 'wearing different ballgowns every day and what you look like'. In comments reported by The Guardian, she said: 'What Julia said was vindictive and very bitter. And it was a ridiculous statement. 'I did not leave because I thought I was not going to win. I left because I wanted to stand for what I believe in and it didn't align with my values. 'And I would hate for another young girl to go into this system after watching me this past year and have to experience the same.' Ms Magee said she agreed to take part in the contest because she believed it would be a platform to promote her campaign to have CPR included in the school curriculum. But she claimed that she and the other contestants were left with little time to promote their causes and were instead expected to look pretty and entertain guests. She also alleged that a man had walked up to her and said 'Next time I'm in London or England, hook me up', which had left her feeling uncomfortable. 'I went there to make a difference but we had to sit like performing monkeys,' she previously told The Sun. 'It's stuck in the past. Morally, I couldn't be a part of it. 'As Miss England, I was told the role would be 'beauty with a purpose' – and it was. I've campaigned for the causes I am passionate about, and have a voice as any modern woman would expect. 'But [Miss World] is simply about the way you look and present yourself. As far as I could see it hasn't changed from the 1960s and 1970s.' Following her departure, Miss World posted a series of videos on social media showing Ms Magee smiling while taking part in interviews and sitting in the hotel during the contest. The organisers said that Ms Magee 'expresses gratitude, joy, and appreciation for the experience' in the footage, serving 'as a direct contradiction to the recent false narratives'. They referred to 'false and defamatory statements' that they said were 'completely unfounded and inconsistent with the reality of her time with us'. Ms Magee was replaced as Miss England at the last minute by Charlotte Grant, 25, of Kirkby, Merseyside, a part-time model and owner of a cosmetics business. Ms Grant was told as a child she would never walk again after breaking her back in an accident on a bouncy castle but ultimately recovered from her injuries. Thailand's Opal Suchata Chuangsr won the final on Saturday. Hasset Dereje Admassu of Ethiopia was the first runner-up,

EastEnders fans 'fuming' as soap confirms another dramatic affair

It was a dramatic night in EastEnders tonight as the soap confirmed yet another shock affair - and fans think they know exactly when the secret will be revealed It's been a dramatic time for relationships on Albert Square, and tonight's episode of EastEnders confirmed yet another shock affair in Walford. During tonight's episode, fans saw Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) struggle with her husband Peter Beale (Thomas Law), who hasn't been helping out with newborn son Jimmy after finding out he was blind. Cindy and Kathy Beale then stepped in to help - which led to a shocking revelation from Peter. ‌ Asked why he won't even pick Jimmy up, Peter exclaimed: "I can't look at him because it makes me angry. And I can't look at you because it's your fault." Kathy then butted in to tell her grandson he was out of order, but Peter was having none of it. ‌ "Why? Because the doctor said that her being as high as a kite is unlikely to be the cause? Well do any of you think it helped?" "She was meant to be protecting our son. My son is blind and I've got to pretend that his mum has nothing to do with the fact he'll never see my face," Peter exclaimed before storming out. A distressed Lauren then went out to find a drink, although Linda refused to serve her in the Vic, as did Gina in Harry's Barn. Zack then took her home - where he revealed all about being Barney's dad. As Lauren stood up to comfort him, things took a turn when she planted a kiss on his cheek, which led to the lips. ‌ It's not the first time the pair have explored a connection. Zack cheated on Whitney with her best friend Lauren weeks before her wedding with the revelation causing Whitney to call off the wedding and leave Walford. Now, fans think history is set to repeat itself at Lauren and Peter's wedding, should the day still go ahead. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: "I don't condone cheating but in this instance you can't blame Lauren especially after the way Peter was with her tonight .He was so selfish and you can't speak to an addict in that way. "She has slept with Zack before so I saw that coming It'll come out at the wedding #EastEnders." ‌ Another responded: "Zack is on a roll with ruining weddings then," with another agreeing: "He really is!" Others were left fuming with the soap after putting Zack and Lauren together once again. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan questioned: "Why did we need lauren and zack again? #eastenders," as another wrote: "I cannot believe we are doing this again with Lauren and Zack. Like are we being serious right now??????????? #EastEnders". Will this just be a one time thing or will the connection between Lauren and Zack go even deeper?
