Barger's three-run blast keys big eighth as Jays complete sweep of A's with 8-4 win

TORONTO - Addison Barger's three-run homer ignited a six-run eighth inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays an 8-4 comeback win Sunday to sweep the four-game series against the Oakland Athletics.
Barger's blast to right centre off reliever Justin Sterner (1-2) was his third homer in three consecutive outings as the Blue Jays (31-28) won their seventh straight at home and handed the struggling Athletics (23-37) their sixth loss in a row.
A two-run, two-out double from Luis Urias in the fifth put the visitors in front 3-0, only to see the Blue Jays score twice in the bottom half of the inning.
Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson went 4-for-4 and added an RBI sacrifice fly in the top-half of eighth inning for a 4-2 lead.
Oakland lefty JP Sears went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts before 30,130 at Rogers Centre.
Erik Swanson (1-0) pitched the eighth inning to win in his first appearance in 2025.
Toronto starter Kevin Gausman only lasted 4 2/3 innings, surrendering three runs on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. He was done in by a 27-pitch opening inning.
Takeaways
Athletics: Denzel Clarke of Pickering, Ont., enjoyed a productive series with four hits, including a homer and three RBIs. He walked once, was hit by a pitch and scored three times. Fellow baseball players Josh, Bo and Myles Naylor are cousins of the 25-year-old centre-fielder.
Blue Jays: Outfielder Daulton Varsho was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain he suffered running from second to third base on Saturday. Davis Schneider was recalled from triple-A Buffalo. Swanson was reinstated from the 60-day IL. Easton Lucas was optioned to Buffalo as a result.
Key Moment
After run-producing hits from George Springer and Alejandro Kirk, Springer was tagged out while jumping up and down on third base after Kirk's double into the left-field corner to end the fifth inning and kill the Blue Jays' rally.
Key Stat
Toronto's offensive totals for the four-game sweep were 39 runs and 56 hits, including 11 homers.
Up Next
The Blue Jays have Monday off before beginning a three-game set at home against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The Phillies have won 17 road games, tied for the most in the National League with the Chicago Cubs.

Tigers Predicted to Acquire Two-Time All-Star Infielder From Blue Jays

The Detroit Tigers have the best record in Major League Baseball and are set to be rewarded with reinforcements at the trade deadline. While the Tigers have been one of the most complete teams in the game, they could still stand an upgrade at shortstop over Trey Sweeney. MLB insider Jeff Passan sees Detroit as a potential landing spot for two-time All-Star Bo Bichette. TORONTO, ON - JUNE 1: Bo Bichette #11 of Toronto Blue Jays swings against the Athletics during the eighth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June 1, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario,... TORONTO, ON - JUNE 1: Bo Bichette #11 of Toronto Blue Jays swings against the Athletics during the eighth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June 1, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. More"While conventional wisdom suggests the Tigers could use another high-octane bullpen arm to secure outs at the end of the game, renting Bichette's services before he hits free agency would infuse the lineup with the sort of bat Trey Sweeney simply doesn't yet wield," wrote Passan. So far this season, Bichette is hitting .276 for the Toronto Blue Jays with seven home runs and 32 RBI. He's posted a .749 OPS and a 109 OPS+, an indication he is performing slightly above average this season. As Passan pointed out, Bichette is set to be a free agent at the end of the season. The Blue Jays have reportedly not discussed any sort of contract extension with him, so this may be their chance to get something for him rather than watch him walk away. The Tigers offense has been strong this year, currently fourth in the league in runs and seventh in the league in hits. Adding a player like Bichette would certainly make the lineup better. "Bichette's gap-to-gap power would play well at Comerica Park and lengthen a lineup that has scored more runs than anticipated," wrote Passan. "After a homerless April, Bichette whacked seven home runs in May and slugged better than .500. The Tigers don't need much. With their prospect depth, though, they can afford a luxury item." If Detroit lands Bichette, the Tigers could then look to extend him at just 27 years old. He has a lot of years left, and this could be the chance for Detroit to lock down its shortstop of the future. More MLB: Cubs Linked to Marlins Ace Sandy Alcantara as Trade Deadline Nears

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Offers 2-Word Response on Demoting Tanner Scott

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have a few reasons to be disappointed after another blockbuster offseason. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell has barely pitched for the team due to injury. Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki has struggled with his command since making his debut. And Tanner Scott, a $72 million reigning All-Star closer, has blown several save opportunities. After serving as one of the most dependable relievers in the sport for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres in recent years, Scott joined the Dodgers as their anointed ninth-inning option. But he has a 4.55 ERA with 14 earned runs in just over 27 innings so far. After Scott blew a 10th inning appearance against the New York Mets on Monday, manager Dave Roberts was asked if still considers Scott as a legitimate option to close games. In response, Roberts offered a clear two words: "I would." (Photo by) More Sloter/Getty "There's not one particular closer right now," Roberts added, per Steve Webb of Dodgers Beat. "I think I've shown that — using different guys in leverage and finishing games like that. ... There are a few guys that I feel comfortable finishing a game with." Roberts made it clear that he's still comfortable with Scott on Tuesday, when he sent him back to the mound in another 10th inning situation against the Mets. That time, Scott rewarded his manager's trust by logging two strikeouts and a ground ball out in 10 pitches to end the game and seal the win. But even after that bounceback performance, Scott would be hard to trust in a high-leverage playoff situation. The Dodgers can hope another option emerges from deeper in the bullpen, via the injured list or at the trade deadline, though it's not too late for their $72 million acquisition to regain a solid grasp on the role. York City and a ‘3UP' campaign intended to make football a little less silly

FAIR GAME? With a reduced slate of action and few transfers of note this week in the men's or women's game (unless you count Mainz signing forward and renowned Gwen Stefani fan Benedict Hollerbach), and still no word on Arne Slot's new residency in Ibiza, Football Daily was fast running out of content for Tuesday's missive. So thank goodness for the open letter from York City owner Julie-Anne Uggla addressed to the National League and the Football League, regarding the 'structurally unjust' promotion system in the fifth tier of English football, which sees just the regular season winners (this season: Barnet) and one playoff winner go up from six teams, who finished second to seventh. Hurray! Advertisement Uggla is a supporter of the 3UP campaign, which proposes that there should be three (not two) teams promoted from the National League, adopting a similar system to the rest of the Football League. In the Championship, League One and League Two, at least two teams are promoted automatically (three in League Two!), with an additional team going up via the playoffs. It might surprise you to learn that York finished second in the National League, and failed to make the playoff final. Instead, Oldham Athletic, the feeder club of Football Daily's five-a-side team Old and Unathletic, returned to the EFL after beating Southend in the playoff final. For reference, Oldham and Southend finished 23 and 28 points behind York in the regular season, respectively. 'Such a glaring imbalance not only undermines sporting merit but erodes the very foundations of fair competition,' fumed Uggla. 'To dominate a league campaign so comprehensively (Barnet the only exception), only to be forced into a playoff lottery, is structurally unjust. It penalises excellence and rewards clubs with fewer points in a way no professional league system should condone. I urge both governing bodies to urgently consider transitional reform, whether via immediate review, temporary relief measures, or an accelerated implementation of the '3UP' model,' she continued. 'At the very least, this season's outcome should provoke an honest re-evaluation of what fairness in football truly means.' Uggla certainly has a valid point and the principle of fighting for 'fairness' on behalf of all football teams in the National League is a noble one, even if it is slightly soured by the fact that York, having finished second, would have been the key beneficiaries of a change. It might have been stronger for someone without a vested interest to lead the charge here, seeing as York started this season knowing full well what the format and rules were and only initially signed up to the '3UP' model in February, when they were unexpectedly in a three-horse race for the title. Uggla, who bought York in 2023, might also be unaware that the club have benefited from odd football rules of the past: City escaped dropping out of the Football League (the old Third Division) in 1977-78 season when relegation back then was decided not by league placing but by a vote where existing member clubs would just decide which one of the bottom teams would keep their place. Automatic relegation/promotion to/from the fifth tier did not exist at all until 1987, and the second playoff place was only introduced in 2003. All of that aside, Uggla is speaking sense. It is a little silly that York, who finished second on 96 points, were not promoted. But football is a bit silly, and had City instead finished seventh, would Uggla have been so vocal in fighting the good fight? I guess we'll never know.
