Virtual style with real impact is drawing designers in

'Wow, I never took you for such a gamer,' my husband remarked as he glanced over my shoulder one night while we were in bed. In the doomscroll pose, supine with phone to face, I was rather happily ensconced in the world of Drest, a fashion mobile game created by former editor-in-chief at both Harper's Bazaar UK and Porter magazine, Lucy Yeomans.
The app prompts users with virtual styling challenges – something like, 'dress rapper Cardi B in a look inspired by her green makeup at this year's Met Gala' – that are rated by other uses to earn you credits to put toward future projects and steps up the stylist hierarchy (a few weeks in, I'm almost about to be promoted to 'Styling Assistant').
My husband was right because I'd never taken myself for a gamer either. While I was born in the 1980s, I never much cared for them, nor had a Nintendo or Sega system of my own. I played Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and other computer games but those were appealing because I enjoy trivia and strategy. Since then, I haven't crushed any candy and I don't warm myself up for the day with a Wordle.
I'd simply never heard of a game that appealed to me, until Drest. Yeomans was in the same boat. 'Someone invited me to play a game on Facebook years ago, and I found the whole thing quite compelling,' she says of Drest's origins. 'I thought, this is so good, but I'm not interested in any of these subjects.'
From there, Yeomans struck out to devise a fashion gaming model based on a 'real-virtual-real' dynamic. The first real is that all the items used in the game's styling challenges – Erdem Moralioglu's decadent gowns; Prada's latest leatherwear; goods from mass brands such as Reformation and Diesel; and finery from emerging labels like the jewellery company Completedworks – exist as real-life products. The game's challenge briefs are based on the pop culture personalities and sartorial trends fashion fans want to tap into right now, anything from Celine Dion's suiting preferences to basketball player Angel Reese's penchant for wearing all-black-everything.
The virtual comes in with the models users dress, avatars that Drest's team develops in partnership with the non-profit Fashion Minority Alliance to ensure as much diversity as possible in terms of ethnicity and size. Perhaps most tantalizingly for an actual stylist like me, instead of relying on real budgets to ensure the most coveted garments and accessories arrive for a photo shoot or red-carpet event, Drest's currencies range from Drest dollars to style credits – all of which can be purchased or acquired by completing challenges.
The final real is that Drest features challenges with real life prizes – a Pandora-sponsored challenge last year came with the reward of attending the British Fashion Awards. The game also has a shoppable element. If a player likes the current season knitted Alaia coat they used in a challenge (which goes for $16,940 on ssense.com), they can click over to purchase it outside the app.
All virtual stylists aside, Drest is gaining traction in the fashion industry. At the last British Fashion Awards in December, Yeomans recalls a moment that crystalized how virtual fashion gaming can give real fashion designers insight into new creative directions.
'A couple of designers came up to me and said they were obsessed with the game,' she says. 'They love seeing how players are styling their collections and are fascinated by seeing how people interpret their brand.' This, in addition to information gathered from player demographics, sponsored challenges and user anecdotes – Yeomans mentions a makeup artist who recently divulged that, since she'd used the same khaki J.W. Anderson jacket in dozens of challenges, she had decided to buy the real version – makes it fertile ground for brand development.
I find it curious that I enjoy playing a game based on the concept of my profession as much as I do. But its appeal goes beyond the fact I can style with my wildest imagination because I don't have to worry about an outfit getting stuck at the border or a competing magazine calling dibs on the look I want.
The allure of Drest lies in how the platform affords users accessibility to garments and accessories without it feeling as transactional. We all know how essential dressing is to self-expression, and a platform like this provides a near carte blanche capability for engaging with fashion without having to think about consumption. It can be just as satisfying as retail therapy, but without the same actual costs.

On Wednesday after Swift went on the 'New Heights' podcast co-hosted by her boyfriend and NFL football star Travis Kelce to announce the imminent release of her 12th studio album 'The Life of a Showgirl,' major companies went into marketing overdrive. The reason? Swift's ability to generate buzz and draw dollars. Swift's tour appearances have become economic events. The singer's Eras Tour two years ago was the first such tour to cross the billion-dollar mark, according to Pollstar's 2023 year-end charts. Cities and their surrounding areas registered a sizeable economic boost after Swift appeared, with thousands of fans making the pilgrimage and spending money at hotels, restaurants and elsewhere. Companies are no longer waiting to capitalize on Swift's gravitational pull and orange-themed memes from big brands began rolling out almost immediately. That is because Swift appeared onstage wearing orange numerous times towards the end of her Eras Tour and she discussed her feelings about the color on the Wednesday podcast. Numerous corporations, from United Airlines to Olive Garden, began posting orange hued memes on their own social media accounts soon after the new album was announced. Shake Shack, FedEx, Buffalo Wild Wings, Cinnabon, Walmart and Netflix did, too. Even X got in on the action, declaring that it had a new profile pic: a glittery orange X. The post hsa garnered 5.5 million views so far. Google is using its search engine to celebrate the October release of Swift's 'The Life of a Showgirl.' Users search for 'Taylor Swift,' are greeted with a stream of orange digital confetti, along with a flaming orange heart and the phrase, 'And, baby, that's show business for you.' Many, it seemed, saw value in tying their brand to Swift. Swift mentioned during the Wednesday podcast that she had Lasik eye surgery. The X account for wasted no time promoting the fortuitous namedrop. 'i got LASIK, i have incredible vision,' they posted, accompanied by a video of Swift giving a shout out to the procedure on the 'New Heights' podcast. 'TAYLOR SWIFT EVERYONE (red heart emoji). ‘Russians at War' team on ‘shocking' backlash to film and direct-to-audience release

Now, after months of cancellations, protests and threats, the controversial documentary will bypass traditional channels and release directly to audiences on Tuesday. The film, which follows Russian soldiers on the front lines of the war in Ukraine, drew a standing ovation at its Venice world premiere in 2024 but quickly became a lightning rod. Its North American debut at TIFF last year was met with demonstrations from pro-Ukraine groups who called it Russian propaganda. Its screenings had to be rescheduled due to 'significant threats to festival operations and public safety.' The blowback continued throughout the year, with festivals including Athens and Zurich withdrawing the film due to mounting protests and security concerns. Meanwhile, TVO scrapped plans to air the documentary after the backlash, leaving it without a distributor. 'I was getting death threats and all sorts of abuse,' says Trofimova of the backlash. 'It was shocking. You go to the war against all odds, you bring back a story, you go deeper than other people because you're that much more obsessed about it, and you are getting attacked by people who have not been even close to the war, but they're telling you what it's like.' The Russian-Canadian director points out that many of the film's detractors said they hadn't seen the film and didn't intend to. 'They're refusing to see the film, but have very strong opinions on it. So that's been a bit surprising,' she says on a video call. In 'Russians at War,' Trofimova embeds herself with Russian troops on the front lines of the conflict in Ukraine, capturing their personal experiences and perspectives. While some have praised it for its unfiltered portrayal of soldiers' realities, others have criticized it for lacking historical and political context about the invasion, raising concerns that it might whitewash the actions of the Russian military. The film's producer Cornelia Principe says the direct-to-audience release is 'partly by design, partly by necessity.' 'It was important for us to get it out there so people can see it, because part of the controversy is coming from places where people haven't seen the film,' explains the Oscar-nominated producer behind 2022's 'To Kill a Tiger.' Principe says 'Russians at War' is still being shopped to European broadcasters and will air on British Columbia's Knowledge Network this fall as part of a series of films about the war in Ukraine. Lawyers representing the film threatened TVO with legal action last year for pulling the film, but Principe says both parties have since reached 'a mutually satisfactory settlement of our dispute and have agreed not to comment further.' She says her production company, Raja Pictures, has reclaimed the film's rights. The film is available to rent worldwide at except in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, where producers plan to offer it for free at a later date. Principe says they took inspiration from the Oscar-winning documentary 'No Other Land,' about the Israel-Palestine conflict, and 'Union,' which follows Amazon workers' fight to unionize — both titles faced distribution hurdles and ultimately went the direct-to-audience route. Trofimova says the intense backlash to 'Russians at War' revealed just how vulnerable films can be to organized attacks. 'It was shocking how easy it is to attack a film. If you are an interest group, if you're a state, if you're a corporation, it's not that hard to get screenings cancelled or to muddy the waters around what it's about,' she says. 'How do we make complex films and get them out there, despite the fact that they will most likely be attacked by some sort of interest group?' Principe worries about the chilling effect such pressure could have on creative freedom. 'Are we leading to situations where filmmakers will self-censor, where broadcasters will self-censor, where festivals will self-censor and not take on difficult things?' Still, Principe says she and Trofimova 'listened to what people were saying.' In response to criticism that 'Russians at War' lacked sufficient context on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they added an introductory card to the direct-to-audience version noting that the invasion is 'the deadliest conflict on European soil since WWII' and that war crimes investigations by the International Criminal Court are underway. As for those still reluctant to watch the film, Trofimova says: 'Watch it when you're ready.' 'It's not a film where it's like 'gotcha.' It's not a film where I aimed to dehumanize someone. It's a document of history and this war is scary. And this war, it is a tragedy and it's still continuing. And when you watch it, just know that it's continuing,' she says. 'I hope, on the human part, we can see each other as people, and I hope that once you see what war looks like, anyone who has any illusions will understand a little bit more.'
