Struggling Mets send right-hander Frankie Montas to bullpen, weigh calling up a prospect

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets moved struggling right-hander Frankie Montas to the bullpen Tuesday. The 32-year-old Montas, who signed a two-year, $34 million deal in December, suffered a strained right lat in spring training and has been ineffective since returning to action. He posted a 12.05 ERA in six rehab appearances and was 3-2 with a 6.38 ERA in eight games, including seven starts, for the Mets. Montas has not pitched more than 5 2/3 innings for the Mets, who haven't gotten more than six innings out of a starter — with the exception of David Peterson — since June 7. In that span, New York is 22-31. The Mets have lost seven straight games heading into Tuesday's series opener against the Atlanta Braves and trail NL East-leading Philadelphia by six games. Montas last pitched Saturday against MLB-leading Milwaukee, throwing 72 pitches and allowing three runs, one earned, in three innings. He worked his usual side session Tuesday and was expected to be available in the bullpen starting Thursday. Montas hasn't pitched out of the bullpen regularly since his rookie season with the Oakland Athletics in 2017. 'We just need to see consistency — and he'll be the first one that tells you,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "It's been a battle for him, health-wise. And then after he got back, we saw flashes for a couple of outings, but then it's been a battle. And he understands where we're at in the season and that's why we made the decision.' Mendoza said New York has not made a decision who will take Montas' spot in the rotation on Saturday against Seattle. The Mets are currently without a long man in the bullpen with the injured Paul Blackburn scheduled to make another minor league rehab appearance Wednesday. That could lead to New York to promote one of two prospects — Nolan McLean or Brandon Sproat — from Triple-A Syracuse. McLean last pitched Sunday. The 24-year-old right-hander, selected in the third round of the 2023 draft, is 8-5 with a 2.45 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 113 2/3 innings in 21 games, including 18 starts, this year at Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton. Sproat, a 24-year-old righty who was a second-round pick in 2023, last pitched Thursday. He is 7-5 with a 4.10 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 101 innings in 22 starts for Syracuse. McLean has pitched at least six innings 10 times, while Sproat has gone six innings in five appearances. 'They are in the conversation, we just haven't decided who the guy is,' Mendoza said. 'We'll see where it goes. But whoever comes up here, if it's one of the prospects, the plan is to give them a good look here.' ___

Back from Achilles injury, Jets' Jermaine Johnson feels he has a 'cheat code' in his leg

It was a long recovery for young Jets pass rusher Jermaine Johnson. Johnson was forced to undergoing season-ending surgery after suffering a devastating Achilles injury during a Week 2 meeting with the Tennessee Titans last year. He's been grinding in his rehab over the past couple of months in an effort to work his way back to the field, and was finally cleared by team doctors to return on Sunday. The 26-year-old was activated from the PUP list on Sunday, and was out there alongside his teammates for Tuesday's join practice session with the Giants. The Jets do plan on playing things safe with him in the early going, but Johnson is feeling good and expects to be ready to roll by Week 1. 'I trust the coaches, they're backing the Ferrari off the truck cautiously,' he said. 'I understand it, but I feel like I'm ready to go -- in my opinion I got a cheat code in my leg. I got a strong Achilles, I'm faster, so I'll be ready when my name is called.' Having Johnson back will be a huge boost for Gang Green's defense heading into the season. Prior to the injury he put together his first Pro Bowl campaign and established himself as one of the more important well-rounded pieces for this group. He took on a much larger role as the year went on and finished with 55 tackles (11 for loss), 7.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble over 17 starts. Now under new head coach Aaron Glenn, the hope is that he'll take his game to another level. 'Right now, I'm just focusing on getting better,' Johnson said. 'This time now I get to work on my football instincts, my movements, my pass-rush, all of that -- my leg feels good, now I'm excited I get this time to build on who I am as a football player.'

Attorney: Lady Vols guard Ruby Whitehorn will plead not guilty at preliminary hearing

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The attorney for Ruby Whitehorn says the Tennessee guard will plead not guilty when arraigned on felony charges of domestic assault and aggravated burglary. 'She is, in fact, not guilty,' attorney Gregory P. Isaacs said in a statement. 'Our firm's investigation has also revealed that the factual allegations contained in the warrants are not accurate and are contradicted by eyewitness accounts. Ruby Whitehorn looks forward to having this matter resolved in the very near future.' Whitehorn's preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday was rescheduled for Sept. 5. The 6-foot guard from Detroit, Michigan, was arrested Aug. 8 after the Knox County Sherriff's Office responded to a call around 4:15 p.m. According to reports, police said Whitehorn got into an altercation outside a woman's residence and kicked in a front door and bedroom door. Whitehorn reportedly told officers she was getting her property back after the woman took her phone and passport, then locked the door. Tennessee issued a statement Sunday saying officials were aware of the situation and gathering information. Whitehorn started 28 of 34 games last season for the Lady Vols and ranked fourth scoring 11.6 points a game shooting 46.3%. She also had four rebounds per game. She started her career at Clemson where she started 62 of the 66 games she played. She helped Tennessee go 24-10 in coach Kim Caldwell's debut season. The Lady Vols lost to Texas in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP women's college basketball: and
