The second day of SEC football media days is taking place Tuesday at Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park and the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and student-athletes Arion Carter, Miles Kitselman and Bryson Eason will represent the Vols on Tuesday. SEC Network is televising the four-day event. Peter Burns on "SEC This Morning" released his top five games this season. He ranked Tennessee's season-opening contest versus Syracuse third. The Vols and Orange will play in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is slated for noon EDT and will be televised by ABC. Tennessee leads the football series all time against Syracuse, 3-0, dating to Dec. 31, 1966. The Vols defeated Syracuse, 34-33, to open their 1998 national championship season. The last meeting between the two schools was on Sept. 1, 2001. Tennessee defeated the Orange, 33-9, at Neyland Stadium. Josh Heupel details Tennessee's quarterback competition at 2025 SEC media days
SEC media days is taking place, Monday-Thursday, at Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park and the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Fifth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel took part in SEC media days on Tuesday. He discussed the Vols' upcoming season from the main stage. Heupel ended his opening statement discussing Tennessee's quarterback competition in fall training camp between Joey Aguilar, Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre. "I know, when I open it up for questions, the first one will be about our quarterback situation, so I'm going to touch on that a little bit here as I get started," Heupel said. "We will have a competition at the quarterback position, three guys inside of that room, really proud of what they've done. Joey, since he got there in May, Merklinger and George MacIntyre, what those three guys have done since they've been on campus. They've taken the summer, developed relationships, rapport with the guys around them, their ability to compete in a positive way with each other in the meeting room and on the field. Their ability to have leadership traits and to continue to grow in that. I'm really excited about getting on the field with those guys. "We've found a way to win with a lot of different quarterbacks throughout my career on the offensive side of the ball, and we're going to find a way to win with the guy that earns a starting spot as we go through training camp here in August." 2025 will mark the first football season for quarterback Joey Aguilar at Tennessee. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior transferred to the Vols from UCLA in April after spring practices. Aguilar will wear jersey No. 6 at Tennessee, according to the Vols' updated 2025 football roster. He enters his fifth season of collegiate football after playing at Appalachian State and Diablo Valley Community College. Aguilar never played for UCLA after transferring from Appalachian State following the 2024 season. He appeared in 25 games, including 24 starts, at Appalachian State from 2023-24. The former Mountaineer completed 511-of-850 passing attempts for 6,760 yards, 56 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, while totaling 456 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 140 attempts. From 2021-22 at Diablo Valley Community College, he totaled 2,992 passing yards and 21 touchdowns.
