Josh Heupel details Tennessee's quarterback competition at 2025 SEC media days

USA Today15-07-2025
SEC media days is taking place, Monday-Thursday, at Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park and the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
Fifth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel took part in SEC media days on Tuesday. He discussed the Vols' upcoming season from the main stage.
Heupel ended his opening statement discussing Tennessee's quarterback competition in fall training camp between Joey Aguilar, Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre.
"I know, when I open it up for questions, the first one will be about our quarterback situation, so I'm going to touch on that a little bit here as I get started," Heupel said. "We will have a competition at the quarterback position, three guys inside of that room, really proud of what they've done. Joey, since he got there in May, Merklinger and George MacIntyre, what those three guys have done since they've been on campus. They've taken the summer, developed relationships, rapport with the guys around them, their ability to compete in a positive way with each other in the meeting room and on the field. Their ability to have leadership traits and to continue to grow in that. I'm really excited about getting on the field with those guys.
"We've found a way to win with a lot of different quarterbacks throughout my career on the offensive side of the ball, and we're going to find a way to win with the guy that earns a starting spot as we go through training camp here in August."

Titans waive 2022 1st-round pick WR Treylon Burks, who injured his right shoulder in practice

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans waived injured receiver Treylon Burks on Monday, two days after the former first-round draft pick injured his right shoulder while making a diving catch in practice. Burks was the Titans' first-round draft pick at No. 18 overall in 2022, a selection acquired by trading Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown to Philadelphia. Burks was hurt more often than not in his first three seasons out of Arkansas. He's considered the third consecutive first-round bust for the Titans, joining offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson (2020) and cornerback Caleb Farley (2021). Burks spent the offseason recovering from a partially torn knee ligament. He had his best season in 2022, catching 33 passes for 444 yards and a score. If he clears waivers, he will revert to the team's injured reserve. The Titans filled Burks' roster spot by signing Ramel Keyton, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2024. Keyton spent time on the Raiders' practice squad and active roster last season. He played in eight games, mostly on special teams. ___ AP NFL:

Nick Folk worked out for Jets on Monday

Caden Davis and Harrison Mevis have been less than perfect in their kicking competition at Jets' camp. The Jets, thus, appear to have interest in an old friend. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the Jets worked out Nick Folk, who kicked for the team from 2010-16. Folk, 40, has played for four other teams in his 17 seasons. He spent the past two years in Tennessee, where he was 21-of-22 on field goals in 2024 and 29-of-30 in 2023. He missed only two extra points in his two seasons with the Titans. Folk, who made his only Pro Bowl in 2007 as a rookie with the Cowboys, has made 84.3 percent of his field goals in his career. Mevis played in the UFL, and Davis is a rookie out of Ole Miss.

Titans release WR Treylon Burks days after he suffered a broken collarbone in training camp

Treylon Burks' time with the Tennessee Titans is now over. The Titans waived the wide receiver on Monday afternoon, days after he suffered a broken collarbone at practice. It marked just the latest significant injury Burks has dealt with since landing in Tennessee. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Burks, who was set to enter his fourth season in the league, ended up appearing in just 27 games over three seasons with the franchise that first selected him with the No. 18 overall pick out of Arkansas. He missed five games in each of his first two seasons, and then went down with an ACL injury early during the 2024 campaign. After recovering from that knee injury, Burks then went down with his collarbone injury after making a diving catch along the sideline at training camp on Saturday. In total, Burks racked up just 699 yards and one touchdown on 53 catches over his three seasons with the Titans. The Titans declined his fifth-year option in May, so he was entering the last year of his rookie contract this fall. Burks was brought into Tennessee as the presumptive replacement for AJ Brown, who erupted after joining the Philadelphia Eagles following his start with the Titans. The Titans even used the draft pick they received in the Brown trade with the Eagles on Burks. He, though, just hasn't panned out. The clear No. 1 target for quarterback Cam Ward, who the Titans selected with the top pick in the NFL Draft earlier this year, is now gone after just three seasons. The Titans have made decent efforts to bolster their wide receivers room this offseason after last year's struggles. They brought in Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson in free agency, so there is a decent veteran presence in Nashville, and they selected Florida's Chimere Dike and Stanford's Elic Ayomanor in the draft. They also signed former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver and Tennessee standout Ramel Keyton on Monday, too. A definitive timeline for Burks' recovery isn't known, though he was expected to miss the start of the regular season recovering. Someone else is sure to give Burks a chance in the league once he's back to full strength, too. Where he ends up after the rough and injury-filled start he's had to his professional career, though, is anybody's guess.
