
What Caused Uttarkashi Flash Floods? ISRO Images, Expert Papers Reveal Clues
As rescue and relief operations continue, a new debate has emerged among experts and glaciologists: what triggered this deadly natural disaster? The answer, it seems, lies in a combination of the region's unique geology and the growing impacts of climate change.
According to a detailed report, the village of Dharali is built on an 'alluvial fan,' a cone-shaped landform created by debris from past floods at the confluence of the Kheer Ganga stream and the Bhagirathi River.
Despite the village being 200 metres from the river, commercial development has encroached directly onto this unstable landform, increasing its vulnerability.
The Landslide Theory: A Reawakened Threat
One of the leading theories is that the mudslide was a reactivated landslide. A glaciologist has pointed to a previous landslide that occurred 2 kilometres uphill from Dharali, suggesting it may have been triggered again. This idea is backed by findings from a paper, Bhambri R et al, High Mountain Hazards in Uttarakhand, which provides a historical context. The paper notes that following heavy rainfall in the Bhagirathi Basin in June 2013, a staggering 533 existing landslides were reactivated. The areas closest to Bhatwari, Pilang, Dharali, and the Tehri dam sites were hit the hardest. The paper explains that this region is prone to such events due to its geology, steep terrain, and unpredictable weather.
Glaciers and a "Breached" Lake: A New Threat?
Another powerful hypothesis points to a potential glacial lake outburst. Using satellite imagery and terrain analysis, glaciologists found two glaciers with huge crevasses approximately 7 kilometres above Dharali. The presence of these crevasses, they say, could be speeding up the melting process. Below these glaciers lie seven smaller lakes. Experts believe that rising temperatures could have caused one of these lakes to breach, sending a torrent of water, rock, and debris-known as moraines-downstream. The sheer destructive power of this debris-filled flow could be the reason for the extensive damage.
ISRO Images Capture the Aftermath
Adding weight to the analysis, ISRO has released satellite images that show the scale of the destruction, which show Dharali Village both before and after the event. The image from August 7, 2025, specifically reveals a significant deposition of sediments and mudflows near the Bhagirathi and Khera gad Rivers, painting a clear picture of the aftermath of the cloudburst.
The Orographic Twist: Rain, Not Snow
A third, less-widely accepted theory, introduces the concept of an "orographic barrier." A scientist suggested that a mountain peak nearly 5,700 metres high could have blocked moisture-laden clouds. This would have caused the clouds to condense and release heavy rain in the upper areas, rather than snow. The scientist argued that this phenomenon could have caused floods in Kheer Ganga, Harsil, and Sukhi top. This theory challenges the glacial breach hypothesis by suggesting that a breach would have only affected the Kheer Ganga catchment.
While the debate continues, what is clear is that the tragedy in Uttarkashi is a stark reminder of the fragile ecosystem of the Himalayas and the urgent need to understand and address the risks posed by climate change and unsustainable development.

With a string of high-profile successes in recent years, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has firmly established itself amongst the front-ranking space agencies of the world. It is now engaged in cutting edge space science and research, in planetary explorations, as well as in development and deployment of new space technologies. It was not always like this. Till very recently, India used to be ridiculed for its space ambitions. It faced technology sanctions multiple times, which delayed its space programmes. Its successes were often acknowledged only for being cheaper than the competition. ISRO was said to be just reinventing the wheel, not doing anything original. But, as the successes of the last few years have shown, none of this could prevent India's emergence as one of the most advanced space-faring nations of the world. The successes have also been able to change the global perception of ISRO. The US, which at various times in the past had denied critical technologies to ISRO, now has entered into a strategic partnership on space with India. Just last month, the two countries launched a unique and ambitious joint mission that will result in the most sophisticated satellite-based imaging of the Earth. Space is one rare technology sector where India can legitimately claim to be one of the front-runners. This, despite the fact, that the space establishment of India has operated with limited resources, both in terms of capital and manpower. But how did this happen? Are ISRO's capabilities really at par with space agencies of the US or China? What are the challenges that ISRO faces as it embarks on even bolder missions in the coming years? Are there learnings from ISRO for other technology sectors? To discuss these, and other related issues, The Indian Express has invited Dr Mila Mitra for an event on Wednesday. India approves its first Maxar-like private satellite data project worth $135mn
A consortium of four startups, led by Bengaluru-based Pixxel, has won a mandate to create and operate India's first privately-built satellite imaging system. Approved by the country's space regulator on Tuesday, the project worth $135 million ( ₹ 1,200 crore) over five years, will see the birth of private Indian space firms that sell earth observation data at scale to commercial clients. The move mimics an established American model of satellite operation, where firms such as Maxar Technologies sell high-resolution satellite images to any paying customer, for a fee. While Maxar's data ran into a controversy when reports highlighted its involvement in the planning of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir on 22 April, industry stakeholders have consistently flagged the importance of the technology in modern-day industries—such as civic planning, forestry, agriculture, disaster management, maritime exploration and more. In the mission, Pixxel, along with fellow startups Dhruva, SatSure and Piersight, will develop a constellation of 12 satellites with 'panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave SAR sensors'—a statement by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (In-Space) said. While the description does not specify a resolution of data, it refers to images that can clearly convey close-range information such as depth and textures. Pawan Goenka, chairman of In-Space, said in the statement that the project 'demonstrates the capability and confidence of Indian companies to lead large-scale, technologically advanced, and commercially viable space missions that serve both national and global markets.' However, he could not be reached for a comment on the government's role in the project. The constellation project, once completed, will become the first private imaging system in India. In-Space did not reveal the breakdown of the final bids till press time. In June, In-Space kicked up a row for awarding a $60-million contract to privatize the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro)'s small satellite launch vehicle to state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). The Centre holds over 70% stake in HAL, leaving analysts wondering whether the sale of the government-built rocket truly qualified as privatization. Industry stakeholders had also raised concerns around stifling of the private sector, at a time when HAL struggled to deliver on previous Isro and Air Force contracts. Tuesday's announcements appear to have made amends by awarding a large commercial contract to private space firms. While the government has thrown open the space sector to private players, various industry veterans, including former Isro chief S. Somanath, have raised concerns over the Centre not being the anchor customer for India's nascent space industry. They fear that without the government's regular and guaranteed orders, the startups may not be able to grow. 'There is no clear statement of intent that for the new private satellite constellation, the government will be an anchor customer. But, this is a sign of intent that India is ready to offer contracts exceeding a few hundred thousand dollars to private companies—which in turn would help the industry grow further,' a senior industry executive said, requesting anonymity, since he was a part of the bidding process for this very contract. Earth observation satellites, Mint reported on 13 July, is giving an increasing fillip to India's space startups in terms of revenue and client base—as governments as well as private firms see a more geopolitically divided world. However, while the likes of Digantara applied and won a ministry of defence surveillance satellite contract, Pixxel itself is a part of an increasing number of companies setting up shop in the US for more lucrative American space contracts. Other finalists of the imaging satellite project included public-sector firm Bharat Electronics, and Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye—which is also building its own surveillance satellite to offer as a product or service around the world.
