Birkin: The Bag, the Woman, the Myth
This month the original Birkin bag, made by Hermès for the British actress Jane Birkin in 1984, sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby's in Paris.
The way Ms. Birkin wore it, festooned with nail clippers and stickers for political causes, has led to its own slang: to 'Birkinify' one's bag. The omnipresent Labubu plush toys that fans like to hang on their bags are said to have been inspired by the way Ms. Birkin affixed eclectic trinkets to her Birkins. Riffs on the Hermés classic, the Boatkin, have become sought-after novelty items that fetch their own hefty prices.
On social media, explainers proliferate on how to emulate Ms. Birkin's late 1960s, carefree, bourgeois-bohemian style, with sheer crocheted dresses and ballet flats.
All of this is happening two years after her death on July 16, 2023, following a cancer diagnosis and more than a decade of treatment.
She was a cult figure, particularly outside France, where she lived most of her life. Ms. Birkin, who was born in London, became a revered actress who appeared in more than 70 films and a musician whose most famous song, 'Je t'aime … moi non plus,' with Serge Gainsbourg, was a worldwide hit. It was banned by the Vatican for its lasciviousness, and Ms. Birkin responded that the pope was their best publicist. In 2023, the black-walled house on the Left Bank where the couple lived opened as a museum, and tickets to tour the residence sell out months in advance.

'My jeans are blue,' she then quips, at which point a narrator delivers the line: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Why are some people upset about Sydney Sweeney's new ads for American Eagle? Unfortunately this repeated use of the slogan 'great jeans', a pun on 'great genes', has put some viewers in mind of the language used by white supremacists and eugenicists. By centring a blonde, white star in a campaign referencing 'genes', some critics are accusing the brand of tone-deafness at best – particularly in the current political climate – and deliberately pushing a white supremacist agenda at worst. HuffPost UK has contacted representatives for both Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle for comment. Others are pointing out that Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle campaign doesn't mention one other important aspect of the product American Eagle's new 'Sydney Jean' features a butterfly detail on its back pocket, in a nod to domestic violence awareness, a cause which the White Lotus star has championed throughout her career. In fact, an American Eagle press release confirmed that '100% of the purchase price from 'The Sydney Jean' will be donated to Crisis Text Line', a charity in the US which aims to help those affected by domestic violence. However, the ads are also being criticised for not highlighting this key part of the campaign, with some saying its accompanying slogan is even more jarring as a result. These Are Our Favorite Wristwatches Under $1,000
Few would have expected the Omega x Swatch Moonswatch to create such a furor both in and out of watch fandom when it was released in 2022, yet in just a few years, it has become one of the most desirable watches today due to its initial scarcity, dual brand recognition, and attractive price. Thankfully, it's much easier to buy a Moonswatch than when it was first released, including online, and the days of needing to pay scalpers for one through eBay are happily over. The Moonswatch takes its name and design from the classic Omega Speedmaster, also known as the Moonwatch, due to it being the first watch on the moon. Unlike the Omega Speedmaster, it's made of bioceramic (which feels a lot like plastic), doesn't have a sapphire crystal, has a quartz movement, is only water resistant to 30 meters, and most definitely hasn't been to the moon. None of this matters, though, as there's so much to like about the Moonswatch, from how it bridges the divide between normal people and watch fans, how it's practically guaranteed to stir up some kind of emotion, and that there's almost certainly a color scheme or design feature that will appeal. Just don't expect it to have the best build quality, or for it to feel anywhere near as expensive as its price suggests. Some also complain about the Velcro strap, but the branding looks great, and it's perfect to throw on your wrist when you're in a hurry. Once it's on, it's so light you barely know it's there. A rubber alternative strap is available if you do hate the Velcro, though. Even if you haven't heard of any other brands and watches on our list, I bet you have heard of the Omega x Swatch Moonswatch, but don't pass it off as just clever marketing. It's a Swatch at heart, and that makes it a fun and affordable gateway into watch ownership. You can choose the Tempest with a Seiko NH35A automatic movement, which the company says it chose due to its 'exceptional durability, reliability, and impressive accuracy (-20 to +40 seconds per day) rating.' The movement will turn up more than once on this list for these very reasons. Alternatively, you can choose a Ronda 715LI quartz movement if you want the watch to always be ready to go, and to save a little on the purchase price, too. Donald Trump hailed John Swinney as a 'terrific guy' after a brief meeting with the First Minister ahead of the official opening of his new golf course in Aberdeenshire. He held a bilateral with Sir Keir at the South Ayrshire course on Monday, where he also held a lengthy press conference. There, the President spoke of his "great love" for Scotland and said he wanted to see the nation "thrive". He was asked about Mr Swinney's plan for a second vote on the constitution. The First Minister said on Monday that the precedent set by the [[SNP]]'s 2011 election victory, when they won an unprecedented majority in Holyrood, would break the "logjam". He said there should be a "legal referendum recognised by all" on Scottish independence if the [[SNP]] manages the same feat at next year's [[Holyrood]] election. "We demonstrated how we break the logjam in the past, by electing a majority of SNP MSPs in 2011, and that led to an independence referendum in 2014," he told reporters. He invited supporters of independence to back his party in the constituency vote and to "demand independence" in the regional vote. Asked about the First Minister's proposal, the President said he did not want to "get involved" in Britain's domestic politics. "We got enough politics of our own," he added. He also claimed he had correctly predicted the result of the 2014 referendum, and suggested there should be a sizeable gap between votes. He told journalists: "I do say that when they made that deal, somebody said that it was – and I remember this very distinctly, I said, 'Could they do this all the time?' – there was a little bit of a restriction, like 50 or 75 years before you could take another vote. Because, you know, a country can't go through that too much."
