The New York Yankees know Anthony Volpe hasn't been himself lately, and the fanbase has urged the organization to bench their starting shortstop.
However, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic is confirming the team currently has no plans to bench Volpe.

TAMPA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 20: Anthony Volpe #11 of the New York Yankees fields a ground ball in the third inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on August 20, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. More"(José) Caballero is the hot new toy in Yankeeland," wrote Kuty. "He can do no wrong right now. But, no, they will not be benching Volpe for Caballero. Volpe's -9 OAA (Outs Above Average) at shortstop this season is tied for last in the majors with CJ Abrams, Bo Bichette and J.P. Crawford, but the Yankees believe he's much better than what the public metrics suggest. They are all-in on Volpe being the shortstop; Caballero having success in a small sample won't change that."
The Yankees have invested a lot into Volpe, and this bad stretch isn't going to change their perspective on him. New York knows that Volpe still has some untapped potential, and it is waiting for him to showcase that both at the plate and defensively.
However, Kuty does provide an option for the Yankees to consider going forward.
"What Caballero's presence could mean is more off days for Volpe," wrote Kuty. "He sat for one game in the St. Louis series, and that could be something the Yankees choose to explore more if Volpe struggles. He's in one of his usual prolonged slumps (6 for his last 44)."
Caballero's hot streak will allow the team to be more flexible, but it appears the Yankees believe he hasn't done enough to permanently bump Volpe from the starting lineup.

Yankees vs. Red Sox: Does historic MLB rivalry still have that 'hatred'?

Historically, the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox rivalry is one of the fiercest, nastiest, and most important in Major League Baseball history. For well over a century, the AL foes, geographically separated by about 200 miles, have battled - both on and off the field - providing memories forever etched in the game's lore. The list of highlights is long and includes Babe Ruth being sold by Sox owner Harry Frazee to the Yankees in 1919; thus, beginning the Curse of the Bambino. There was Bucky Dent connecting on a Mike Torrez hanging breaking ball for a home run; a blast which gave New York the 1978 pennant. And, New York's Aaron Boone hitting a walk-off series-winning homer against Boston's Tim Wakefield in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. MLB POWER RANKINGS: Epic win streak has Brewers running away with NL's top seed While the Yankees have won about 55% of their over 2,317 regular-season matchups, the Red Sox have also enjoyed monumental victories over the Yankees. After trailing the 2004 ALCS 3-0, Boston reeled off four straight wins to send the Yankees packing. With the victory, Boston advanced to the World Series, where they would capture their first title in 86 years. The rivalry has seen its share of fights including a 2004 dustup which pitted New York's Alex Rodriguez against Red Sox backstop Jason Varitek, and of course who could forget Sox star pitcher Pedro Martinez shoving 72-year-old Yankees coach Don Zimmer to the ground one year earlier? But while these teams have engaged in fisticuffs, notable games, and perhaps the most lopsided trade in sports history, it can also be said that the rivalry has been on hiatus for some time. 'I mean it was like hatred,' said Brian Doyle, a reserve infielder, who hit a team leading .438 for the Yanks in the 1978 World Series. 'It's just not the same as it was back then.' Dent concurred with Doyle telling USA TODAY Sports, 'I don't think it is quite as intense because back in the 70's you didn't change teams very often. It was always (Thurman) Munson, (Carlton) Fisk, (Graig) Nettles, Bill Lee.' While the rivalry has featured some of baseball's juiciest storylines, it's also cyclical. 'Early in my career, when the Red Sox didn't have much of a good team, when I first came up in the late '60s, the rivalry was not as intense,' said Roy White, who spent his entire 15-year career with the Yankees. 'Once they came up into prominence and we got into prominence also, in the late 70s – those were series to be remembered.' That era featured historical matchups and more than a few memorable dust-ups including a 1976 bench-clearing brawl which began when New York's Lou Piniella collided with Boston catcher Carlton Fisk. The most impactful result of the fight was a separated left shoulder for Lee, which forced 'The Spaceman' to miss 51 games that year. The rivalry remained strong until Boston broke the supposed Ruth curse. 'Once they started winning the World Series, it kind of calmed down,' said Tino Martinez, who was a key member of the 1999 Yankees, which defeated the Red Sox in the ALCS before winning the World Series. 'You play them so many times now, it takes away a little of the rivalry.' Still, whether or not the players on this year's Boston and New York squads maintain animosity for each other based solely on the names on the front of the opponents' jerseys, both sides know their upcoming series, which begins Thursday in the Bronx, is pivotal, and fans just may once again be treated to fireworks in this latest battle between baseballs Hatfields and McCoys. The stakes are high with both teams clinging to AL wild card spots and only six weeks left in the season. But while both teams have their eyes squarely on the games ultimate prize, a championship, they know their fortunes would gain a huge boost with a successful series against their most hated rival. 'Not saying we don't want to beat everybody, but the Red Sox are the number one team you want to beat,' said Mickey Rivers, the speedy leadoff batter who patrolled center field for the champion 1977 and '78 Yankees. 'It's always going to be a rivalry. It's always Boston – New York,' said Dent.

Yankees Insider Sounds Alarm on Max Fried's Struggles Ahead of Red Sox Showdown

The last eight games have been a dream for the New York Yankees, but there's one bad moment that sticks out from that stretch. It wasn't the one loss the Yankees had against the Minnesota Twins before rattling off five wins in a row. It was Saturday's putrid start for All-Star pitcher Max Fried, who allowed seven earned runs to the St. Louis Cardinals, including two home runs. Fried somehow got the win in that outing, but his ERA ballooned to over three for the first time since his first appearance. As recently as June 25, Fried's ERA was 1.92; it's now risen to 3.26. The Astros defeated the Yankees 7-1. (Photo by)As the Yankees get set to begin a critical four-game series with the Boston Red Sox that will unofficially kick off the stretch run, insider Chris Kirschner of The Athletic gave the opinion that Fried's slump is the most pressing issue facing New York these days. "In my view, Fried's struggles are the biggest concern for the Yankees. He has a 6.80 ERA in his past eight starts, and there haven't been many positives in those outings," wrote Kirschner. "Throughout this stretch, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has frequently said that it's been more of a command problem than a stuff problem. He's right." In what could be a classic good news, bad news scenario, Kirschner also hinted that Fried's left index finger blister, which caused him to leave a start against the Chicago Cubs in July, could be contributing to his struggles. "The Yankees have been adamant that Fried's blister has nothing to do with his struggles. However, his second-most used pitch against righties, his curveball, has seen a drop in Stuff+," Kirschner wrote. "Before July 1, Fried's curveball had a 120 Stuff+, but it has decreased to 111 since. Notably, his curveball has graded slightly better in Location+ since July 1. The drop in stuff has coincided with an increase in opponent slugging percentage, going from a .321 before July 1 to a .409 slugging percentage after." Fried is scheduled take on the Red Sox for the second time this season on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Boston has a different look now; gone is Rafael Devers, who homered off Fried in June, but star rookie Roman Anthony and third baseman Alex Bregman, who was injured for six weeks, present tough new challenges. Yankees' Aaron Boone Sends 3-Word Giancarlo Stanton Message Amid Surge

The New York Yankees have been through quite a roller coaster ride over the last few weeks, starting when superstar Aaron Judge went down with an elbow injury. Judge's injury only sparks up when he throws, so he's been cleared to return as the team's designated hitter, pushing Giancarlo Stanton back to the outfield. Stanton has fit back into the outfield perfectly for the Yankees, though he doesn't provide great defense. But at the plate, Stanton has been one of the best hitters in the league this year. His OPS is near 1.000 on the year and it's largely because of the offensive tear he's been on over the last few weeks. TAMPA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 20: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees celebrates his two-run home run in the 10th inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. TAMPA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 20: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees celebrates his two-run home run in the 10th inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on August 20, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. More"He's an animal," Boone said when talking about Stanton after the slugger's pinch-hit home run on Wednesday, via Yankees beat writer Gary Phillips. The Yankees have needed every bit of Stanton's power this season, especially as Judge has slumped a bit over the last few weeks. Heading into Thursday, Stanton is slashing .432/.523/.1.027 with seven home runs in less than 40 at-bats this month. He's tallied 17 RBIs on 16 hits with eight runs scored. He's raised his season slash line to .311/.389/.642 with an OPS of 1.031 with this recent surge. It's unclear if or when Judge will be able to play the outfield again in the Bronx. If he's not able play the outfield again this season, Stanton will be forced to continue playing in the outfield as Judge holds down the designated hitter spot.
