I-35W between Burnsville split and I-494 to close nightly through Wednesday

Major road closures are coming to Interstate 35W in the southern Twin Cities metro starting Monday night, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). The roadway will be closed to traffic from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in both directions between Interstate 494 in Bloomington and the I-35/35W/35E split in Burnsville. MnDOT says the nightly closures are necessary so crews can install beams for the Burnsville Parkway bridge. Several ramps will also shut down this week in Burnsville. Beginning 5 a.m. on Tuesday, the ramp from eastbound Highway 13 to southbound I-35W, the ramp from southbound I-35W to westbound Highway 13 and the ramp from southbound I-35W to County Road 42 will be closed. The Highway 13 ramps will remain closed through September, while the County Road 42 ramp is expected to be closed through October. Construction on I-35W between the Burnsville split and Cliff Road began in April and is expected to continue through fall 2026. Crews are working to resurface pavement, repair or replace several bridges, update guardrails and improve drainage, according to MnDOT. The project is estimated to cost $80 million. For more information on the I-35W project and detour routes, click here. There are several other Twin Cities area highways and interstates under construction this summer, including I-494, Interstate 94, Interstate 394 and more. MnDOT says it has 180 road and bridge projects, and 51 other infrastructure improvements planned this year, which is more than usual. MnDOT encourages drivers to check for updates, avoid cutting through local roads and allow extra travel time during closures. Derek James contributed to this report.

The project also includes developing a landscaped park within the interchange and under the bridge, with a shared-use path, skate park and the parking lot. An approximately 35-foot-high retaining wall with noise barrier will be erected along Cedar Grove Street. It will begin on I-195 westbound at Purchase Street and will end at I-195 westbound at Mt. Pleasant Street, and will be mounted on the barrier bridge, and ground mounted along Cedar Grove. A live virtual public information meeting will be held via Zoom to discuss the New Bedford I-195/Route 18 Interchange Rehabilitation Project on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. Register here. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The City of Troy's project to convert the intersection of Adams Street and Riverside and Staunton roads into a single-lane roundabout has been moved to the first half of 2026. A spokesperson with the City of Troy said the change is 'due to staffing turnover and the need to schedule with outside utility companies to move utility lines and poles.'
