Faisal's lawyers urge authorities to keep hunting 'acid assailant'

KUALA LUMPUR: Faisal Halim's lawyers insist that identifying the perpetrator of the horrific acid attack on the national footballer should be the priority, ahead of other legal matters.
Their statement came after the Attorney-General's Department classified the case that shocked the nation as "No Further Action" (NFA).
Faisal's lawyers — Haijan Omar and Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha — were informed that despite exhaustive efforts by the police, no suspects have been identified or linked to the case.
Understandably, this has left the Selangor star and his teammates frustrated.
"Before we consider suing or taking any action against any party, the most important issue is the perpetrator. We must identify who the perpetrator is before we can consider the next steps," said Haijan, who added that the current focus is not on any organisation or agency, but solely on the individual responsible for the attack.
Haijan also reminded the public not to speculate irresponsibly on the case, warning that such actions could have legal consequences.
"Don't make speculations, we have the law. If you speculate without basis, the law will come after you," said Haijan.
Haijan said that while NFA decisions are not uncommon in cases lacking strong evidence, the high-profile nature of this case has drawn more attention.
"It's just that in this case, the victim is Faisal Halim, a national football player, that's why it's more visible," added Haijan.
Nik Zarith lauded Faisal for his courageous comeback from the acid attack.
"We understand this must have been a traumatic experience for him. But if we look at his progress, in less than a year he's already back on the field," added Nik Zarith.

Deeromram at the double as Red Giants down Brunei 3-0

PETALING JAYA: Selangor bagged their first win of the Super League season after cruising past newcomers Brunei 3-0 at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Tuesday (Aug 12). Katsuhito Kinoshi's men made a flying start when Thailand international Kevin Deeromram tucked home a low cross in the fifth minute. Deeromram was on target again in the 36th minute to double the Red Giants' advantage. Brunei showed brief flashes of threat after the break, forcing Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al Hafiz into action, but their blunt attack failed to produce a breakthrough. Brazilian import Chrigor Moraes then sealed the win with a neat finish in the 67th minute. Selangor almost added a fourth late on, but Deeromram's left-footed strike came off the post and Alvin Fortes' follow-up sailed over

'Lives are not political tools': Penang Keadilan Youth condemns politicisation of Zara's death

GEORGE TOWN: Penang PKR Youth has strongly condemned any attempts to politicise the tragic death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, emphasising that human lives are not political tools and that such actions are immoral. It urged all parties to refrain from exploiting the tragedy for political gain. "Any efforts to turn this tragedy into a political issue are wholly immoral," it said in a statement, stressing the importance of respecting the victim's family and focusing on justice. Penang PKR Youth expressed its deepest condolences to Zara's family and fully supported the calls from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to place full trust in the police to conduct a transparent, thorough and fair investigation into the case. "Malaysia is a nation governed by the rule of law. "No individual, regardless of rank, status or position, will be exempt from legal action if proven guilty," it added. It is standing firmly with Zara's family and all Malaysians seeking justice, praying that the late victim's soul be blessed and placed among the righteous. It was reported that the move by the federal police to take over the investigation into Zara's death was among four requests made by her family to the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC). The family's lawyers, Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M. Borhan and Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, said the requests, which included the appointment of experienced investigating officers from federal police to handle the case, were outlined in a letter to the A-GC dated Aug 5. Zara, a Form One student at a secondary school in Papar, Sabah, was reported to have fallen from the third floor of a dormitory. She was found unconscious in a drain around 4am on July 16 and later died while receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

Takiyuddin questions police handling of Zara's case

KUALA LUMPUR: A post-mortem into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir should have been conducted without being prompted by any party, as it is standard procedure in cases of sudden or unexpected death, said Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. The Kota Belud member of parliament said the case involving the 13-year-old raised questions about police procedures — particularly the absence of a post-mortem before Zara was buried, just a day after her body was discovered in a drain near her school's hostel at 3am on July 16. He also urged Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek to present a thorough and detailed report to the Dewan Rakyat on Zara's death, as the case has attracted significant public concern. "Based on standard procedures, when someone dies, a permit is required to release the body for burial, whether under normal or unusual circumstances. "In this tragic and mysterious incident, did the police allow Zara's burial without conducting a post-mortem beforehand? "I wish to emphasise that a post-mortem should be conducted without any request from any party, as this is standard procedure in sudden death or sudden death report cases. "We want to know why the police did not conduct a post-mortem in this case," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat today. Commenting further, he added that Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun had reportedly said on July 28 that a thorough investigation was being carried out from all angles, and later confirmed on July 31 that the investigation papers had been sent to Bukit Aman for review before submission to the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC). "However, when the investigation papers were submitted to the A-GC on Aug 6, the A-GC returned them to the police with instructions to complete the investigation, which meant the papers were incomplete. "Again, on Aug 8, the A-GC once more returned them with further instructions to the police, including the exhumation of Zara's body to allow a post-mortem to be carried out. "This indicates that the investigation conducted by the police was incomplete and did not lead to a conclusive finding," he said. Yesterday, the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat's Corporate Communications unit confirmed that a task force comprising Bukit Aman CID personnel has taken over investigation into Zara's death. Zara, a Form One student of a secondary school in Papar, Sabah, was reported to have fallen from the third floor of a dormitory. She was found unconscious in a drain on July 16 and later died while receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE) in Kota Kinabalu. On July 31, Jauteh said that the possibility of bullying as a factor had not been ruled out. On Saturday, Zara's grave was exhumed in preparation for the post-mortem. On Sunday, the post-mortem was conducted at HQE, lasting about eight hours from 11am to 7.30pm.
