Midhun's bail plea adjourned in liquor case

New Indian Express10 hours ago

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing on Rajampet MP PV Midhun Reddy's anticipatory bail plea in the liquor policy case to Wednesday after extensive arguments.
Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, representing the CID, alleged that Midhun Reddy played a crucial role in the liquor policy's formulation and execution. He claimed liquor orders were selectively awarded to companies that paid kickbacks, leading to a Rs 3,500 crore loss. Statements from accused and witnesses reportedly support these claims.
Conversely, Midhun Reddy's counsel, senior advocate T Niranjan Reddy, argued that the MP was falsely implicated due to political vendetta and pointed out inconsistencies in the CID's investigation. He claimed key accused were being shielded and cited past rulings protecting other leaders, demanding similar protection for Midhun Reddy.

Police Bust ‘Fake Loan' Scam, Two Arrested in Outer North Delhi

New Delhi: Delhi Police busted a 'Fake Loan' scam, arresting two men involved in duping citizens by impersonating representatives of a reputed finance company. Victims were lured with promises of high-value loans and duped of money under the guise of processing fees. According to police, the fraud came to light after a complaint was received on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) by a resident of Bhalswa Dairy. "The complainant reported being contacted by men posing as finance officials, who convinced him to transfer Rs 1.92 lakhs as processing and policy fees for a loan of Rs 25 lakhs. Govt doubles honorarium amount to those jailed during Emergency

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday doubled the honorarium provided to those who were imprisoned during the Emergency period. The decision, taken during a cabinet meeting, came ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency — the period from June 25, 1975 to March 31, 1977. According to the cabinet decision, if an eligible beneficiary has died, the surviving spouse will get half the amount. The government also removed the earlier condition that those applying for the pension must have been at least 18 years old at the time of arrest during the Emergency. The monthly honorarium to those imprisoned during the time of the Emergency was introduced by the then Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government in 2018. Currently, 4,301 people in the state receive the pension and the expenditure for the same is Rs 39.01 crore. Those who stayed in jail for less than a month were given Rs 5,000 per month, while those who stayed more than a month were given Rs 10,000. The new cabinet decision has doubled these amounts. In case of death of a beneficiary, the surviving spouse will have to apply afresh to the district collector concerned for the honorarium. Also, if the person who underwent imprisonment during the Emergency was not alive before January 2, 2018, his or her spouse will be able to apply for honorarium by attaching an affidavit. The deadline for this will be 90 days from the date of announcement.

HC adjourns hearing in plea for CBI probe into Exalogic affairs

Kochi: High court on Tuesday adjourned to July 2 the hearing of the PIL seeking a CBI probe into the alleged financial transactions between CMRL and Exalogic Solutions, a defunct company owned by T Veena, daughter of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. While considering the petition, the bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji noted that notice had not been served to some of the respondents in the PIL, including the interim settlement board of the Income Tax department in New Delhi. The court directed the petitioner, senior journalist M R Ajayan, to take necessary steps regarding these respondents and adjourned the matter. Ajayan, in his petition, alleged that Exalogic Solutions received Rs 1.72 crore from CMRL as illegal gratification. He also sought an investigation into the alleged political nexus involving the chief minister and the companies concerned. Meanwhile, the chief minister and his daughter filed counter-affidavits in the PIL, denying all allegations against them. They contended that the petition lacks specific details or verifiable evidence, rendering it legally unsustainable and indicative of a fishing and roving enquiry.
