George Springer's 8th-inning grand slam breaks game open, Blue Jays beat Guardians 10-6

Washington Post6 hours ago

CLEVELAND — George Springer broke the game open with a grand slam in the eighth inning, Eric Lauer held Cleveland scoreless until the sixth and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Guardians 10-6 on Tuesday night.
Springer's eighth career slam and 11th home run this season gave the Blue Jays a 10-4 lead. He went 3 for 5 with three runs scored to pace Toronto's 14-hit night.
Lauer (4-1) allowed one run — a solo shot by Carlos Santana in the sixth inning — and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked three to stretch his winning streak to three games.
It was the second time Lauer pitched in Cleveland during his seven-year career. He grew up in Grafton, Ohio, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Cleveland and played at Kent State.
Alejandro Kirk hit RBI singles in the first and fifth innings for the Blue Jays. Jonatan Clase extended the lead to 6-1 with a two-run single in the seventh.
Lane Thomas drew the Guardians to within 6-4 with a three-run home run in the seventh. Kyle Manzardo connected in the ninth.
Cleveland starter Logan Allen (5-5) gave up four runs (three earned) and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Guardians put runners on second and third in the fourth inning while down 3-0, but Lauer ended the rally by getting Johnathan Rodríguez to ground out.
The Blue Jays' Ernie Clement has multiple hits in nine of his last 11 games after going 2 for 4 with a run-scoring double.
Blue Jays RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 6.00 ERA) is expected to be activated from the injured list and make his second start of the season. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has been out since March 30 with right thumb inflammation. The Guardians will go with RHP Gavin Williams (5-3, 3.58).

Exactly 1 year after CWS triumph, Angels' Christian Moore puts majors on notice with 2 big homers

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Christian Moore made it to the big leagues less than 11 months after the Los Angeles Angels drafted him. A mere 10 days after he got that call, Moore felt he truly arrived Tuesday night when he hit two clutch homers to beat the Red Sox. Moore hit a tying solo homer in the eighth inning and a two-run shot in the 10th inning of the Angels' 3-2 victory over Boston . The walk-off homer capped a remarkable moment for the energetic No. 8 overall pick who could be a fixture in the Halos' lineup for years to come.

Trey McBride: Kyler Murray and I can have the same connection as Mahomes and Kelce

Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is at the Tight End University summit this week, sharing thoughts with other tight ends from around the NFL, and he said a discussion with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was particularly inspiring. McBride said on ESPN that Kelce talked about his connection with Patrick Mahomes and how a tight end can make himself the quarterback's best friend. McBride said that he believes he and Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray can develop the same kind of ability to work together that the Chiefs have with Kelce and Mahomes. Advertisement "Travis, he would always give us his nuggets on being friendly to the quarterback," McBride said. "Make sure you and your quarterback are on the same page. He plays with a little freedom. Him and Mahomes have a nice connection and I kind of took that and was like, 'Why can't Kyler and I have that same connection?' I feel like that's what I've tried to do. I've tried to have that same relationship and that growth with Kyler and just continue to make plays for him and be that security blanket where if he needs somewhere to go with the ball, he always can throw it to me and that's what I'm trying to do for him." McBride made his first Pro Bowl last season and was rewarded with a four-year, $76 million contract extension. The Cardinals expect Murray and McBride to connect for many years in Arizona. McBride thinks they can have one of the best connections in the NFL.
