
BHU appointed nat'l coordinator for INIs on SWAYAM platform

's commitment and contribution to advancing digital education in the country, the Ministry of Education appointed the university as National Coordinator (NC) for
Institutions of National Importance
(INIs) on the
SWAYAM platform
.
The decision was endorsed during the SWAYAM Board meeting held recently, said BHU SWAYAM coordinator Ashutosh Mohan of the Institute of Management Studies (IMS), who was designated as the national coordinator for this responsibility. The university will now facilitate the administration, academic support, and strategic development of SWAYAM MOOCs (
Massive Open Online Courses
) for all INIs . BHU's acting VC Prof Sanjay Kumar congratulated the BHU SWAYAM team and assured all possible support to set the varsity as a benchmark on the SWAYAM platform. tnn
Currently, India has over 160 institutions of national importance, including IITs, NITs, AIIMS, IISERs, IIITs, central universities, and specialised institutions. With the exception of pure technology-related courses, the majority of online courses developed by these institutions on SWAYAM will now be centrally coordinated and quality-assured by BHU.

Prof. Chaturvedi has a longstanding connection with BHU. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at IIT BHU. President Draupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, and he will assume the role as the 29th Vice Chancellor of BHU starting August 1, 2025. Prof. Chaturvedi's tenure is for three years, and he can hold this position until he reaches the age of 70. Prof. Chaturvedi has a longstanding connection with BHU. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at IIT BHU. Thus, his new role signifies a homecoming for him. He is the grandson of Acharya Parshuram Chaturvedi, a renowned scholar of saint literature, which deeply connects him with culture and education. His familiarity with the environment at BHU will be an asset. Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi has impressive academic credentials. He completed his education at IIT Kanpur, earning a BTech, MTech, and PhD. After leaving IIT BHU in 1996, he became a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IIT Roorkee. He returned to IIT Kanpur in 1999, where he held significant positions such as Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Dean (R&D), and Deputy Director. He was appointed as a professor in August 2012 and has held the Sanjay and Rachna Pradhan Chair Professorship since March 2015. In 2017, he became Director of IIT Roorkee, a position he held for an extended period. Recently, he was also given the additional role of Director (Acting) of IIT Mandi. Prof. Chaturvedi is renowned in the field of technology, particularly for his work in waveform shaping, sequence design, and MIMO systems, which have gained international recognition. Over seven months after Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain demitted office on January 7, Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been named as the new VC of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi (HT Photo) According to a letter from the Union ministry of education addressed to the registrar of BHU, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the visitor of BHU, appointed Prof Chaturvedi for a term of three years from the date he assumes office, or until he attains the age of 70, whichever is earlier. He becomes the 29th VC of the university. Prof Chaturvedi earned his BTech, MTech, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1986, 1988 and 1995, respectively. He began his academic career at the department of electronics engineering, IIT-BHU, where he served from 1994 to 1996. He later joined the department of electronics and computer engineering at IIT Roorkee. In 1999, he moved to IIT Kanpur, where he held several key administrative positions including head of the department of electrical engineering, dean of research & development and deputy director. He was promoted to Professor (HAG) in August 2012 and held the Sanjay and Rachna Pradhan Chair Professorship from March 2015. In 2017, Prof Chaturvedi became the director of IIT Roorkee, a position he held until October 2022. During his tenure, he also served as the director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla (January 2017 – August 2018) and as director of IIT Mandi (July 2020 – January 2022). Following this, he returned to his parent institution, IIT Kanpur. An accomplished academician, Prof Chaturvedi coordinated the BSNL-IITK Telecom Centre of Excellence, which contributed significantly to the Indian telecom sector. He has received several honors, including the INSA Teachers Award, the Distinguished Teacher Award of IIT Kanpur, and the Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also a founding member of the Telecom Standards Development Society of India (TSDSI) and served on the department of telecommunications (DoT) committee in 2008, which recommended spectrum allocation criteria for telecom operators. Prof Chaturvedi's research interests include communication theory and wireless communications.
