M&S food sales show resilience despite cyberattack, says NielsenIQ
HighlightsBritish retailer Marks and Spencer's food business experienced a 10.8 percent increase in food sales over the 12 weeks to May 17 year-on-year, despite challenges from a recent cyberattack. The cyberattack led to the suspension of online clothing orders and affected food availability, contributing to an estimated loss of 300 million pounds in operating profit for Marks and Spencer. Marks and Spencer's market share in the UK grocery sector rose to 3.8 percent, although its sales growth slowed compared to previous reports.
British retailer
Marks & Spencer
's food business saw food sales increase 10.8 per cent over the 12 weeks to May 17 year-on-year despite the fallout from a cyberattack last month denting availability, industry data showed on Thursday.
Researcher
NielsenIQ
said M&S' share of the UK grocery market rose 20 basis points to 3.8 per cent in the period year-on-year.
M&S' sales growth did, however, slow from 14.7 per cent in NielsenIQ's previous report.
As part of its management of the cyberattack, M&S stopped taking online clothing orders and also took other systems offline. That hit food availability and also resulted in higher waste and logistics costs.
Last week M&S said the attack would cost it about 300 million pounds (USD 404 million) in lost operating profit, with disruption to online services lasting probably until July.
Most of NIQ's data broadly echoed the findings of rival researcher Kantar's report on Wednesday, with robust sales growth from discounters Aldi and Lidl, market leader Tesco, number two
Sainsbury
's and online supermarket Ocado.
However, M&S is not fully included in Kantar's market share data set.

UK bans single-use vapes to stem use by children, reduce harmful litter
Last Updated: London, Jun 1 (AP) A ban on disposable vapes came into force across the UK on Sunday as the British government aims to stem their use by children, reduce litter and prevent the leaking of harmful chemicals into the environment. The ban makes it illegal for any retailer – online or in-store – to sell vapes, whether they contain nicotine or not. They will still be able to sell reusable vapes. The crackdown follows the soaring use of disposable vapes in schools and a rising tide of trash as users dispose of the vapes. It is estimated that as many as 5 million disposable vapes are thrown in bins or littered every week across the UK, rather than being recycled. A number of countries are seeking to regulate the vape market, which has grown exponentially over the past decade or so. Australia outlawed the sale of vapes outside pharmacies last year in some of the world's toughest restrictions on electronic cigarettes, while Belgium became the first European Country to ban the use of disposable vapes at the start of this year. California has been at the forefront of bringing in new regulations in the US. The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said usage among young people remained too high, and the ban would 'put an end to their alarming rise in school playgrounds and the avalanche of rubbish flooding the nation's streets". Also known as single-use vapes, disposable vapes are non-refillable and unable to be recharged, and are typically thrown away with general waste or just thrown on the street. Even when they are recycled, they need to be taken apart by hand, while their batteries are a fire risk to recycling facilities and can leak harmful chemicals into the environment and potentially harming wildlife. Businesses were given six months to prepare for the change by selling any existing stock. Rogue traders who continue to sell them risk a fine of 200 ($260) in the first instance, followed by an unlimited fine or jail time for repeat offending. The UK Vaping Industry Association said its members had moved quickly to comply with the June 1 deadline, but warned of 'serious unintended consequences" emanating from too much regulation. 'We are concerned that this ban will encourage former smokers who have already transitioned from cigarettes, which kill 220 people every day in the UK, to return to combustible tobacco or opt for unregulated vapes," said its director general, John Dunne. Separately, the British government is legislating to potentially restrict the packaging, marketing and flavours of e-cigarettes. (AP) SCY SCY First Published: June 01, 2025, 21:00 IST

Photo of Sheikh Hasina's father Mujibur Rahman removed from Bangladesh banknotes
Bangladesh unveiled new currency designs, marking a significant change on Sunday. The notes no longer feature the image of its first president, who was also the father of exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ousted from power last year. The nation is home to around 170 million people and is presently under caretaker administration following Hasina's departure, coinciding with the commencement of her trial on Sunday for allegedly suppressing the August 2024 uprising against her leadership. Previously, all currency notes displayed the image of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who governed Bangladesh from its independence from Pakistan in 1971 until his assassination, along with most family members, during a military takeover in 1975. "Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks," Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan told AFP. The revised designs in this predominantly Muslim country incorporate imagery of Hindu and Buddhist religious structures, alongside historical buildings. The artwork includes pieces by the renowned artist Zainul Abedin, illustrating the Bengal famine during British rule. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like गुड़गांव में बिक्री के लिए 3बीएचके फ्लैट (कीमतें जांचें) 3BHK Flat For Sale | Search Ads और जानें Undo India's First Reaction After Bangladesh Bans Sheikh Hasina's Awami League Party One design features the national memorial honouring those who sacrificed their lives in the independence conflict with Pakistan. The central bank released three of nine denominations on Sunday. "The new notes will be issued from the central bank's headquarters, and later from its other offices across the country," he added. "The other denominations of the notes with new designs will be released in phases". The current notes and coins will continue to be valid alongside the new currency. This alteration reflects previous changes influenced by political shifts. The initial currency from 1972, after the country's renaming from East Pakistan, featured a geographical representation. Subsequent notes displayed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, leader of the Awami League, which Hasina later headed during her 15-year administration. During periods of alternative leadership, particularly under the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the notes featured cultural and archaeological sites. The Awami League received a ban last month pending legal proceedings against Hasina and other party officials. Hasina, aged 77, currently resides in India by choice, refusing to comply with an extradition request for her trial attendance.
