Mujib dropped from new Bangladesh banknotes, replaced with temples, landmarks

India Today2 days ago

New banknotes were released in Bangladesh with new designs, replacing the portrait of the ousted Prime Minister and the nation's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with natural landscape and traditional landmarks, the country's central bank said.Till now, all the banknotes feature the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh to freedom from Pakistan in 1971 until he was assassinated by soldiers in a military coup four years later. Along with the new banknotes, existing notes having Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's portrait and coins will remain in circulation.advertisement"Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks," Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan told news agency AFP.
The new banknotes, released by Bangladesh Bank, will have images of Hindu and Buddhist temples, as well as historic palaces. They will also feature artwork by the late painter Zainul Abedin, depicting the Bengal famine during the British colonial rule.Another banknote will feature the national martyrs' memorial for those who died in the independence struggle against Pakistan. The notes for three of the nine different denominations were released on Sunday. The others will be put into circulation in phases. "The new notes will be issued from the central bank's headquarters, and later from its other offices across the country," Khan said.advertisementThis is not the first time that the designs of the banknotes have been modified to reflect Bangladesh's changing politics. When the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) headed by Khaleda Zia was in power, the notes featured historic and archaeological sites. In 1972, the initial notes featured a map after Bangladesh changed its name from East Pakistan after gaining independence. The later banknotes featured Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who fronted the Awami League, which Sheikh Hasina led during her 15-year-old rule until she fled the country in August last year following a student-led uprising against her. The Muslim-majority country has been run by a caretaker government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus since Hasina fled to India.Earlier today, Bangladeshi prosecutors charged Sheikh Hasina, in her absence, with crimes against humanity for her alleged role in the violent crackdowns during the 2024 student-led uprising. This marked the formal commencement of the trial of the 77-year-old leader.Last month, the Awami League was banned pending the trial of Hasina and other party leaders.(with inputs from AFP)Tune InMust Watch

Elon Musk's Tesla not interested in manufacturing in India, keen on opening showrooms: Report

Tesla may not set manufacturing plant in India, but is keen on selling its EVs here. (AFP) Notify me Despite a lot of hypes and recent developments, Tesla may not set manufacturing plant in India. Instead, it would only open showrooms in major cities and sell its electric cars via CBU (Completely Built Unit) routes. Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy has said that the US electric car manufacturer is not interested in manufacturing in India. However, he also mentioned that Tesla is keen on opening showrooms in the country. This comes at a time when the Indian government has amended its electric vehicle policy to attract investments from major foreign players in the segment, like Tesla and the automaker too ramped up the pace of its India operations by hiring for various roles. Kumaraswamy's remarks came amid the Indian government's push to promote domestic manufacturing of passenger vehicles, with a special focus on electric vehicles, news agency ANI has reported. " are only to start showrooms. They are not interested in manufacturing in India," the minister reportedly said. Speaking further on the issue, Heavy Industry Secretary Kamran Rizvi added, 'The real intent we'll know when we open the application." He noted that there is no such official communication yet from Tesla. Meanwhile, the minister also added that many global auto companies such as Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Skoda and Kia have shown their interest in setting up manufacturing units in India under the government's new EV policy. Earlier, there were reports that Tesla was interested in importing its electric cars into India and subsequently selling them through their showrooms in India. Tesla boss Musk had in the past indicated that he was interested in investing in India, but high import duty structures were a bone of contention between the company and the Indian government. Tesla's intention to enter the Indian market intensified after the Indian government announced its new EV policy, under which import duty was reduced to 15 per cent and many incentives were provided for setting up a manufacturing plant in India. Elon Musk's father keen on Tesla's presence in India Meanwhile, Elon Musk's father Servotec's Errol Musk, who is touring in India, appeared keen on Tesla's presence in the country. "That is something that I have to be careful not to say too much about. Tesla is a public company. It's not you look at India and the population, the kind of people you've got here, the energy and everything and when I hear that, with great respect, BYD and various others are coming in, and Tatas and Mahindra are making great cars, I'm very inclined to say, wait, why aren't we having Teslas here. But I can't say too much. That's just a personal point of view," he reportedly said. India issues guidelines for domestic EV manufacturing The Indian government on Monday notified guidelines for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India. The central government approved a forward-looking scheme to promote the domestic manufacturing of passenger cars, with a special focus on electric vehicles. The initiative is aligned with India's national goals of achieving a net-zero target by 2070, fostering sustainable mobility, driving economic growth, and reducing environmental impact. The Indian government aims to make the country a premier global destination for automotive manufacturing and innovation. The scheme shall help to attract investments from global EV manufacturers and promote India as a manufacturing destination for electric vehicles. The Scheme will also help put India on the global map for manufacturing of EVs, generate employment and achieve the goal of 'Make in India", claims the report. Google AI CEO Demis Hassabis: If I were a student right now, I would study ...

Demis Hassabis, Nobel Prize winner and cofounder and CEO, Google DeepMind Google DeepMind CEO and Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis says he would still prioritize STEM subjects if he were a student today, despite artificial intelligence's rapid transformation of the job market. Speaking at SXSW London on Monday, Hassabis emphasized that understanding mathematical and scientific fundamentals remains crucial even as AI reshapes entire industries. "It's still important to understand fundamentals" in mathematics, physics, and computer science to comprehend "how these systems are put together," Hassabis said. However, he stressed that modern students must also embrace AI tools to remain competitive in tomorrow's workforce. Hassabis predicts AI will create "new very valuable jobs" over the next five to 10 years, particularly benefiting "technically savvy people who are at the forefront of using these technologies." He compared AI's impact to the Industrial Revolution, expressing optimism about human adaptability despite widespread job displacement concerns. Hands-on AI experience essential for future success Beyond traditional education, Hassabis recommended that students gain practical experience with cutting-edge AI systems. "I'd also be experimenting with all the latest AI systems and tools and seeing what's the best way of utilizing them and making use of them in useful and novel ways," he explained. The DeepMind leader believes today's children will become "AI native" similar to how previous generations grew up with the internet. This technological fluency will be essential as companies increasingly use AI for tasks like coding, with major tech firms including Meta, Microsoft, and Google already implementing these tools. At Google's recent I/O developer conference, Hassabis and Google cofounder Sergey Brin predicted artificial general intelligence—when AI matches or exceeds human capabilities—could arrive around 2030. This timeline underscores the urgency for students to prepare for an AI-dominated future. While some companies are reducing hiring for AI-replaceable roles, Hassabis maintains that the technology will ultimately "supercharge" workers who understand how to leverage these powerful new tools effectively.

House prices in UK rise 3.5% in May 2025: Nationwide

LONDON: British house prices in May were 3.5% higher than a year earlier, monthly data from mortgage lender Nationwide showed on Monday, after an unexpected 0.5% monthly increase largely reversed a fall in April. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 0.1% monthly increase and a 2.9% annual increase. The seasonally adjusted monthly increase was the largest since December, while the annual gain was the second-smallest since October, after April's 3.4% rise. British property sales surged in March as buyers sought to complete transactions before the end of a partial exemption on purchase taxes, before falling sharply in April, according to government figures. However, Nationwide said demand appeared to have recovered in May. "Despite wider economic uncertainties in the global economy, underlying conditions for potential home buyers in the UK remain supportive," Nationwide's chief economist, Robert Gardner, said. Low unemployment, wages rising faster than inflation and the prospect of some further Bank of England interest rate cuts were all acting as a boost to the property market, he said.
