Chinese tourists in Italy shocked to find their luggage stolen

The Star10-07-2025
A GROUP of tourists from China who were visiting Italy had the shock of their lives after all their luggage went missing from their tour bus, reported China Press.
The tour group, comprising 30 participants, embarked on a tour to visit France and Italy from June 26 to July 7.
On July 3, they arrived at the town of Pisa in Italy to visit its iconic Leaning Tower.
As the visit would not take more than 20 minutes, the group left their bags and suitcases on their tour bus.
When they returned less than half an hour later, all their belongings on board had disappeared.
One of the tour participants named Jin said they were heartbroken as all the things they had bought were gone.
'There was an aunty on board who bought a Rolex from Italy for her son. He hasn't even gotten the chance to wear it and now it's gone. She nearly had a heart attack from it,' he said.
According to Jin, it was fortunate that their tour guide had kept all of their passports, which meant they were able to return to China without any problems.
Jin said they made a police report on the matter. However, despite having provided CCTV footage and the GPS location of the stolen luggage, Jin claimed the police did take any action.
When contacted, a Chinese embassy to Italy staff said they will recommend a lawyer to work with local authorities to try and recover their belongings.

Walking alongside her was a man dressed in black with just a hint of grey hair.
While they were not seen holding hands, many Internet users are speculating that this could be the star's new boyfriend.
Fans also praised Cheung for maintaining a fit figure despite her age.

23 indicted over tower's collapse in earthquake

Prosecutors have indicted 23 people and companies in a case linked to the deadly collapse of a Bangkok high-rise in an earthquake. The 30-storey tower crumbled seconds after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on March 28, killing thousands in Thailand's wartorn neighbour. The tower, meant to house the state audit office, was the only building in Bangkok to collapse, killing 89 people on the site, mostly construction workers. The speed and suddenness with which it fell prompted a legal probe. Thailand's Office of the Attorney General said a case has been submitted to a criminal court, with a decision expected in a matter of months. 'Investigators agreed to indict 23 individuals and legal entities over professional misconduct and forged documents,' it said in a statement yesterday. The indictment included 16 individuals and seven firms, and also listed the names of people representing some of the accused companies, which include an architectural firm and a Chinese construction business. Further details of the allegations were not released. However, separately, justice department investigators have previously said they were probing the quality of construction materials used at the site. Among the individuals indicted is Premchai Karnasuta, one of Thailand's top tycoons. He serves as executive director of the Italian-Thai Development (ITD) company – one of the kingdom's biggest construction businesses, which has also been indicted. If convicted, 71-year-old Premchai faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 baht (RM26,113). This is not the tycoon's first legal tangle. In 2021, a Thai court sentenced him to three years and two months in prison for poaching protected wildlife, including a black panther. He was released early in 2023 as part of a group of inmates granted clemency for good behaviour. According to public filings with the Stock Exchange of Thailand, Premchai owns nearly 12% of ITD's shares. He was taken into pre-trial detention in May. — AFP

‘Spirit medium' for animals scams grieving pet owners

Compiled by SALMA FAIRUS, R. ARAVINTHAN and C. ARUNO A WOMAN in China claiming to be a 'spirit medium' for pets has scammed more than a hundred grieving pet owners for thousands of yuan, reported China Press. The medium claimed that she was able to identify the bodies in which dead pets have reincarnated. She charged a minimum of 128 yuan (RM75) per session and customers could choose to buy a discounted package for multiple sessions at between 899 yuan (RM529) and 1,899 yuan (RM1,117). One of the medium's victims was Anran (not her real name) who lost her 15-year-old dog last year. After her post about how sad she was online, she was invited to join a chat group with other purported grieving pet owners. This was when Anran was bombarded with testimonials from 'owners' who successfully contacted their dead pets through the medium. She paid around 1,000 yuan (RM588) to try and reach out to her beloved pet. Anran was told to recite a spell, keep a dream journal and try to find her pet in her dream. The medium blocked Anran when she complained that the spell did not work. According to other victims, the scam began as early as June 2024. ‘I am grateful for any food'

Unwitting subject: Danish seen residing outside the Merlin Tower building in Johor Baru. — Picture courtesy of China Press Pranked homeless man has no ill will towards influencers PETALING JAYA: The homeless man who was given leftover chicken bones by three influencers bears no ill will towards the trio. Instead, he said was grateful for any donated food. The 47-year-old, known only as Mohammad Danish, gave an interview to China Press on Wednesday as he was sitting outside the Merlin Tower in Johor Baru. According to Danish, he was born in Perak but grew up in Johor. He became homeless last year and is currently living outside the Merlin Tower building on Jalan Meldrum. Danish recalled taking a nap before being awoken by five men, two of whom were cameramen. "At that time, I did not understand their intentions. I thought they were just giving me food. "I opened the wrapped package and could see chicken rice. But it was mixed with a lot of chicken bones." He said after the prank, the men came and apologised to him. Danish added that police have taken his statement regarding the matter. It was reported that the prank was then uploaded online by the perpetrators and soon went viral. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission described the video as "extremely offensive" and said the trio have had their statements recorded at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor. Meanwhile in Seremban, the three influencers have been released on police bail. Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the three, aged 19, 18 and 14, were brought over from Johor Baru on Tuesday to be remanded. "They were released after their statements were recorded. "Although the three are from Johor Baru, a report related to the incident was made here," he told reporters yesterday. ACP Mohamad Hatta said the teenagers were being probed under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. In the clip, the trio were first seen eating at a fast food restaurant and then placing chicken bones in a pack of rice. They then gave it to a homeless man who was sleeping on the sidewalk. The man appeared shocked after opening the packet but responded with a simple gesture of thanks. Following backlash from netizens, the teens issued an apology. They claimed that the man had been informed about the filming beforehand and had consented to it. They also claimed that they had given him a full meal of chicken with rice earlier.
