Janette Manrara dazzles as Roxie Hart in Chicago

Leader Live30-04-2025
On Tuesday, Chicago The Musical had it's opening night for its run at the Llandudno theatre.
Headlining as Roxie Hart was Strictly star Janette Manrara.
Her skills as a dancer were brought to the fore, elevating the routines and physical comedy the role demands - but can she sing?
The answer, simply, is yes.
(Image: Chicago The Musical/Venue Cymru) Manrara's vocals were on point, particularly in the dualling duets with Velma Kelly in an equally stunning performance from Djalenga Scott.
When experiencing Chicago, you are suddenly struck with how many of the iconic musical numbers are ingrained in your memory.
Show opener All that Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, Roxie, and my personal favourite Cell Block Tango (He Had it Coming) are delivered perfectly, carrying the sordid tale of crime and stardom along the most entertaining way.
Members of the audience couldn't help but sing along to the well known hits such as All that Jazz, Cell Block Tango, We Both Reached for the Gun, and Razzle Dazzle.
Set in the 1920s, we see Roxie Hart end up in Cook County Jail after murdering her lover on-the-side in a fit of rage, after he threatened to walk out on her.
In attempts to avoid conviction, Roxie teams up with the slickest criminal lawyer in Chicago who turns her crime into fame, much to the horror of her cellmate and rival Velma.
Scott and Manrara are excellent as Velma and Roxie, serving sass and emotion with breath-taking physicality and top-notch vocals.
Alongside the jailbirds, the talented ensemble deliver an incredible display of Bob Fosse's iconic work.
There was real love from the audience for Joshua Lloyd's portrayal of Amos Hart, and Jordan Lee Davies as Mary Sunshine, Dan Burton as Billy Flynn, and Victoria Anderson as Mama Morton, were equally excellent and note perfect.
Fosse's choreography shines throughout, reaching perfection with Cell Block Tango, I Can't Do it Alone, and We Both Reached for the Gun.
The stark black set and stark spotlights are used expertly to conjure the environments of the county jail, jazz clubs, and the courthouse.
The show's themes are dark and serious, with a whole heap of cynicism, but due to the show's high energy and wit, the fun and excitement never let up for a second.
The extremely talented live orchestra are also more than worthy of note, their belting performances setting pulses racing and transporting the audience to the seedy world of jazz clubs.
It was so refreshing to witness the orchestra on stage throughout the whole show, adding that extra feeling that we were looking into a jazz club.
Chicago The Musical razzles and dazzles from the opening note to the final curtain, and will be running at Llandudno's Venue Cymru until May 3.

90s reality reboot cancelled after just one series as Channel 5 boss calls axe ‘a disaster'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CHANNEL 5 has confirmed another major reboot has been axed from their line-up – calling the failure a 'disaster'. Ben Frow, 5's Chief Content Officer, announced two major cancellations today as part of Edinburgh's TV Festival. Speaking on the decision, he said: "I think it was a disaster [the show] didn't work, because it was brilliantly made." Faking It originally existed from Channel 4 from 2000 to 2006, and followed people trying to learn a brand new career path in the space of four weeks. With the help of an expert in the field, the participant was then tested by competing with trained people in that skill at the end - with a panel having to figure out who was 'faking it' and who was legitimate. The series was rebooted by Channel 5 last year with three episodes, but it's now confirmed to not be renewed. Running from May to June, the three episodes saw a fish fryer learn to be a sushi chef, an estate agent become a market trader, and a painter-decorator learn to be a make-up artist. The series came under fire by unimpressed viewers, who labelled the show a "fix" after its first episode on air in 19 years. Showing Surrey luxury estate agent Rex swap properties for northern street markets, with the help of newly-announced Strictly star and wheeler dealer Tom Skinner. As part of the ruse, Rex had to adopt a northern accent and tackle gruelling 10-hour shifts, but managed to convince the market traders he had to fool. The show suffered flailing ratings and couldn't grab an audience enough to keep it on air. Channel 5 'to reboot' iconic reality series after nearly two decades off air The first episode failed to get into the Top 50 shows airing that week, according to ratings monitor BARB, with several episodes of The Chase and BBC News topping it. The announcement came alongside the axe of Challenge Anneka, the reboot of the 80s series starring Anneka Rice working on charitable projects by recruiting local companies. During his appearance at Edinburgh TV Fest, Frow admitted the channel had started the year on a difficult note, but stated it was a "tough time for linear television" in general. 5 The series initially ran in the 90s on Channel 4 Credit: Channel 4

George Clarke breaks silence on new girlfriend as he signs up for Strictly Come Dancing

George Clarke openly admitted to being in a relationship for the first time in his showbiz career just hours before the YouTuber was revealed to be part of this year's Strictly line up George Clarke has revealed the reason why he confirmed his romance with lingerie model Yasmin Amelia just hours before he was announced as part of this year's Strictly Come Dancing line-up. ‌ The 25-year-old YouTuber, who built a loyal following online with his sharp sense of humour, previously kept fans guessing when it came to his relationship status. ‌ Until now, Clarke has often joked about dating mishaps and dodged questions about his love life. But ahead of his glittering BBC ballroom debut, he decided to go public with a girlfriend for the first time. ‌ He explained his reasoning on the Useless Hotline Podcast, saying he wanted to take control of the story before speculation started. He shared: "That's part of the reason why we wanted to say something. Because the two options were, say something. You have full control over how it comes out. "Whatever you say is basically how people find out, or it stays private. [It] just sort of takes all the control out of your hands. But then, I [will] just go on stream after that and be like, that's not true, by the way. But, yeah, she's my girlfriend." Fans first spotted hints of his relationship during a livestream, and quickly figured out that his partner was Yasmin Amelia, also known as Yasmin Bennett, a model signed to J'adore Models with over 30,000 Instagram followers. Clarke himself boasts more than 686,000 followers and previously appeared on the Netflix reality show Inside. While many of his fans celebrated the news of his new romance, others were taken aback. One Reddit user wrote: "Caught me off guard because he is a very private person especially about his dating/love life. Even on the pod he has expressed his desire to keep things private and off socials." However, another wrote: "I heard about this on his stream, and I'm genuinely happy for him!" ‌ Clarke has also addressed speculation about the so-called Strictly Curse, which what fans call the phenomenon of many stars who join the show leaving their partners for someone they've met during the competition. He quickly dismissed the idea that his relationship could be at risk because of his upcoming time on Strictly, and insisted that he went public about his girlfriend because he wanted to be honest with his fans, rather than as a form of damage control. Clarke also accidentally dropped another interesting piece of information on the podcast, hinting at who he might be partnered with on the show. He revealed that he had already met professional dancer Lauren Oakley in rehearsals, saying: "I've not met anyone apart from, I believe her name's Lauren, who was the pro that I met. Because when we had an interview for it, so it's like an hour long interview, and then like an hour long dance session." Oakley, who joined the Strictly pro team in 2022, has previously competed with journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy and singer JB Gill. If Clarke's slip-up means what it seems to imply, she might be guiding the YouTube star through his first ballroom steps.
