Producer Of AKB48 Announces Auditions For A New Male Idol Group

Hype Malaysia3 days ago
The long-standing Japanese idol girl group, AKB48, has seen its fair share of ups and downs, but above it all, their popularity soars through generations of graduates as they are Japan's highest-grossing female act. Utilising this fact, producers of the group have finally opted to tap into a different facet of groups, such as expanding their nationality range, and maybe we'll see a boy group soon.
Yasushi Akimoto (秋元 康), producer of AKB48, has announced a worldwide audition and a theatre opening for a new idol group featuring an all-male lineup. Auditions are opening in the Summer, which means it will likely start later this month or in August.
The audition is open to participants aged 12 to 26 years old who are not currently signed under any talent agencies, record label or music publisher. 'I am very honoured to have been appointed as the general producer of this content. I hope that everyone will witness every moment and think, 'This is how the future is created', comments Akimoto.
In light of the formation of the new boy group, a dedicated theatre will be built in a commercial facility in Tokyo where the group will be holding future events. The theatre will be operated by Mitsui Fudosan and include other commercial facilities operated by the company. The dedicated theatre serves as a foothold for the boy group for its main centre of operations, including regular performances and fan events, much like how AKB48 operates.
Not much is known about the particulars or the auditions, but reports say that participants worldwide are required to move to Tokyo after passing the audition, where they will be able to participate in future promotional events.

Disgraced Korean Influencer Returns To Social Media Despite Being Sentenced For Sexual Assault

It's a sad reality that many sexual offenders could still have a platform despite being found guilty of their crimes. Recently, the return of a disgraced South Korean influencer sparked outrage amongst netizens. South Korean influencer Seo Won Jeong (원정맨), known by his TikTok account @/ox_zung, was once very popular, with over 55 million followers on the video platform alone. However, in 2023, he stopped posting online, seemingly going on hiatus. Several months later, reports emerged that Seo Won Jeong was under investigation for his involvement in a sexual assault case. He was also accused of filming the assault. In April 2025, news reports revealed that Seo Won Jeong was sentenced to more than three years in prison. However, a second trial reduced his sentence, due to lack of evidence, to one year and six months in jail, suspended for two years. The TikToker also shared an apology post in May 2025, seemingly admitting to the allegations. Despite the sentencing and his admittance, Seo Won Jeong recently returned to posting videos. On 3rd July (Thursday), the social media personality shared a video of him cleaning his home before facing the camera and bowing. He then shared another video, returning to his usual comedy content. Unsurprisingly, this move sparked outrage from netizens. Many expressed anger at Seo Won Jeong for brazenly returning to social media after his sexual assault trial. Some even called him shameless for continuing his influencer career despite being charged with a serious crime. However, some fans showed support for the TikToker's return. Some comments even said they look forward to seeing more postings from Seo Won Jeong. His recent videos are also gaining traction, with his most recent video, posted on 4th July 2025 (Friday), gaining over 300,000 views in just 12 hours. It's also worth noting that the influencer's TikTok follower count is still in the 50 million range despite his months-long hiatus. Netizens are calling for TikTok users to boycott and stop providing a platform for Seo Won Jeong, arguing he won't feel remorseful for his actions if he continues to be popular. Singer Ju Hak-nyeon cleared of charges over alleged prostitution activities

Ju Hak-nyeon had denied paying for sex with former Japanese adult actress Kirara Asuka. Photo: Ju Hak-nyeon/Instagram South Korean singer Ju Hak-nyeon, formerly of K-pop boy band The Boyz, will not face charges after he was accused of being involved in prostitution activities. The 26-year-old was in June when the South Korean media reported that his then agency, One Hundred Label, had received an enquiry from Japanese tabloid Shukan Bunshun about his personal meeting with Kirara Asuka, a Japanese adult film actress-turned-influencer, in Tokyo in late May. A South Korean media outlet claimed that he had allegedly paid for sex with the 36-year-old woman. The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul then received a complaint on June 19 from a netizen requesting an investigation into Ju. On July 2, South Korean media outlet Sports Kyunghyang reported that the police had decided on June 25 not to prosecute Ju, as the complaint was based on an Internet article and that there were insufficient specific reasons or circumstances to initiate an investigation. Ju had admitted on June 19 in a letter of apology on Instagram Stories to meeting Asuka, but denied rumours of being involved in prostitution activities. The apology came after he was booted from The Boyz on June 18. He wrote another post on Instagram on June 20, threatening to take legal action against media outlets which continued to spread false information about him. He also said that he was removed from The Boyz with no valid reasons and that his contract termination was done unilaterally by One Hundred Label. The company defended its decision on the same day, saying that he was suspended as the controversy had affected The Boyz's activities and that it provided grounds for contract termination. One Hundred Label warned that it would take legal action against Ju if he continued to repeat the distorted claims. Asuka broke her silence on social media platform X on June 21, saying that she had never accepted money for private sexual services, including during the encounter with Ju. The singer then took to social media on June 22, denying the prostitution allegation again and detailing the sequence of events leading to his sacking from The Boyz. South Korean newspaper The Korea Herald said that a court ruling is expected to determine whether the contract termination is lawful. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
