Hong Kong police arrest 2 for stealing HK$200,000 via tampered cheques
The force said on Monday that the arrests were made last Friday in Wong Tai Sin and Tuen Mun by officers from Kwai Tsing district crime squad and Kwai Chung special duty team, respectively.
The 31-year-old woman and 21-year-old man, both local residents, were arrested on suspicion of theft and using false instruments.
Police received reports from multiple residents whose bank accounts had been debited via altered cheques between March and July this year.
Investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly stole cheques from postboxes in industrial buildings across various districts.
They then used an eraser to alter the payee details and amounts on the cheques before depositing them into their own bank accounts.

Hong Kong teen dies after being found unconscious in bedroom with ‘space oil' drug
A 17-year-old has died in a Hong Kong hospital after being found unconscious in his bedroom, where police also discovered the narcotic 'space oil', the Post has learned. A police source said on Monday that the teenager's mother had attempted to wake him at their home in Cheung Sha Wan at around 8.45am on Sunday. He was rushed to Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po, where he was declared dead at 9.49am on Sunday. A police spokesman said officers discovered multiple dangerous substances in the flat, including a vape device containing liquid etomidate, the main ingredient in the drug commonly known as 'space oil'. Cannabis and ketamine were also seized. The source said the 'space oil' was inside the bedroom where the teenager was found. There were no suspicious injuries on his body, but he had multiple self-inflicted wounds on his shoulders and forearms. The teenager did not leave the flat on Saturday. At around 5am the following morning, his father saw him using the bathroom and said he appeared normal. The father also reminded him to take his prescribed psychiatric medication, which he did before returning to his room.

Sacked HSBC analyst sues bank for alleged racial discrimination
A former HSBC employee in Hong Kong has sued the bank for alleged racial discrimination, maintaining that he was excluded from meetings, had his bonuses reduced and was ultimately sacked because of his black heritage. Advertisement Former senior business analyst Robert Ngugi Tomkinson claimed an unspecified amount of damages for reputational damage, emotional distress and financial loss against HSBC Global Services (Hong Kong) in the legal action commenced at the District Court on Friday under the Race Discrimination Ordinance. The former employee said he had consistently displayed professional conduct in his position and received favourable annual ratings since joining the bank in November 2019. According to the writ, which the Post inspected on Monday, the claimant became the subject of 'sustained and differential treatment' since the arrival of a new manager in April 2024, prompting him to file a formal internal complaint five months later. On February 11 this year, an internal investigation partially upheld Tomkinson's complaint after finding his manager had acted 'inappropriately', including disclosing his performance status to irrelevant third parties.
