Hong Kong reports new imported chikungunya fever case, bringing tally to 5
Hong Kong reported a new imported chikungunya fever case and another probable patient on Friday, bringing the number of confirmed cases to five in a week. Health authorities said the latest confirmed case involved a 66-year-old woman with a chronic illness who lived in Kwai Tsing district. A preliminary investigation by the Centre for Health Protection found that the woman travelled alone to visit relatives in Foshan, Guangdong province, from July 24 to Tuesday this week. The patient could not recall being bitten by a mosquito, the centre said. The woman developed a fever, rash and joint pain on Wednesday and went to see the doctor at Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan the next day. Her blood test results came back positive for the chikungunya virus. The centre said the woman's condition was stable.

Hong Kong lawmakers want pilot schemes aiding high-risk seniors expanded
Hong Kong lawmakers are calling for the expansion of pilot schemes to identify and support elderly residents living alone or with a spouse in ageing districts, following two recent cases in which skeletal remains of seniors were found in public flats in Kwai Tsing district. Some legislators on Thursday highlighted existing gaps in the city's social safety net for high-risk elderly people, calling on the government to expand the support schemes as soon as possible to cover more residents in need, with priority given to ageing districts. On Wednesday, the corpse of a 77-year-old woman was found in her home at Shing Yat House in Kwai Shing East Estate - the second discovery in three months of skeletal remains in public flats in Kwai Tsing district. Investigators reportedly found sales receipts in the flat dating back to November 2023, with none bearing later dates. Earlier in May, police received a report from a Housing Department employee who found the remains of an 83-year-old man in a flat at Shek Lei (I) Estate. Last month, the Social Welfare Department launched a pilot scheme in Kwun Tong and Sha Tin districts - the two districts with the highest number of seniors - utilising its elderly case data and the Housing Department's household information to identify older residents living alone, with their spouse, or with carers of elderly and disabled people, in public housing estates. The Housing Authority also recently launched a pilot scheme for installing door sensors at elderly residents' homes in two public housing estates, Wan Hon Estate in Kwun Tong and Sheung Lok Estate in Ho Man Tin. The sensors track door activity, alerting family members if no movement is detected within a specified time frame.

Hong Kong confirms 3 new imported cases of chikungunya fever
Hong Kong confirmed three new cases of chikungunya fever on Wednesday, comprising a woman returning from Guangdong province's Foshan and a father and son who had travelled to Bangladesh. The Centre for Health Protection on Wednesday said that it was investigating the three imported cases. Health authorities said the woman, 79, lived in Southern district and had visited the mainland Chinese city of Foshan from July 1 to 31 to see her relatives. The patient was unable to recall being bitten by a mosquito, but developed a fever and joint pain on Monday and sought treatment at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam the next day, the centre said. The other two cases are a 55-year-old man with a chronic disease and his 10-year-old son, who both live in Kwai Tsing district. The pair travelled to Bangladesh between July 12 and August 3. The father first developed symptoms in Bangladesh on July 27 and visited a clinic in Hong Kong on August 4.

Hong Kong police arrest 2 for stealing HK$200,000 via tampered cheques
Hong Kong police have arrested a man and a woman for allegedly stealing cheques from postboxes and tampering with them to obtain about HK$200,000 (US$25,480) from victims' bank accounts over a four-month period. The force said on Monday that the arrests were made last Friday in Wong Tai Sin and Tuen Mun by officers from Kwai Tsing district crime squad and Kwai Chung special duty team, respectively. The 31-year-old woman and 21-year-old man, both local residents, were arrested on suspicion of theft and using false instruments. Police received reports from multiple residents whose bank accounts had been debited via altered cheques between March and July this year. Investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly stole cheques from postboxes in industrial buildings across various districts. They then used an eraser to alter the payee details and amounts on the cheques before depositing them into their own bank accounts.
