Austin Butler Explains Why He Didn't Want to Steal the Spotlight at Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico Residency

Yahoo2 days ago
Just days after partying it up with Bad Bunny in Puerto Rico, Austin Butler stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday (Aug. 14) to talk about his experience.
'I've never been to Puerto Rico before. I fell in love with the culture. The food is insane. The water is so warm. The people are amazing, and we went to his show,' Butler — who was in town with director Darren Aronofsky to promote the upcoming Caught Stealing movie — told his host before getting into all the juicy details.

'It's insane — they love him. To see what he means to Puerto Rican culture, but also the actual show, how they structure it,' Butler says of Bad Bunny's 30-day residency taking place at El Choli. 'I thought we were going to be in the audience with everyone. Someone gave me an edible right before the show, and I thought it was a good idea at the time. Then it turns out we're in a casita that's basically the second stage … suddenly I'm on stage with Bad Bunny and the edible is working. It was wild.'
He explains that although videos of him in the casita went viral on social media, he tried to keep a low profile while enjoying the concert.
'My brain is in two movies: I'm so proud of him and falling in love with Puerto Rican culture, and everyone is so sexy and amazing. The other part of me is like, 'Don't dance because you'll take attention from him. This is his moment.' So, my body is saying to hide, but the music is so good and in my bones at that time, that I ended up swaying my hips while crossing my arms.'
Earlier in the interview, he talked about Bad Bunny's character in Caught Stealing, set to hit theaters on Aug. 29.
'I've seen him in Bullet Train and he was wonderful in that,' he shares. '[In Caught Stealing] he plays a Puerto Rican gangster. He's tough, he has a red beard. He dyed his hair. He plays a guy named Colorado.'

VEGA BAJA, Puerto Rico — Tourists slipped into borrowed red polyester vests from the Puerto Rico supermarket where Bad Bunny once worked, grinning as they posed for photographs in the superstar's old uniform. They listened intently as his former boss recalled how he loved classic salsa songs. 'He always liked going to the parking lot to gather the shopping carts because it seemed that he felt free there and would sing,' said Delza Vélez, the head of HR at Econo, the supermarket.

Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem light up the stage with Bad Bunny in Puerto Rico

Fifteen years in, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem are keeping things fresh. The Oscar-winning couple shared a fun moment this week as they joined Bad Bunny on stage during the rapper and singer's concert residency in Puerto Rico. "Gracias Benitoooooooo💕Impresionante!!" Cruz, 51, wrote on Instagram Tuesday, Aug. 12, translating to, "Thank you Benito, impressive!" In the Instagram video, Cruz wears a black lacy top as she captures herself singing and dancing with Bardem, 56, close behind before she pans to Bad Bunny sitting and rapping on stage. She then pans back to a surprised Bardem wearing a black baseball cap. A post shared by Penélope Cruz (@penelopecruzoficial) Cruz and Bardem married in 2010 and have two children: Leo, 14, and Luna, 12. Bad Bunny, the Latin superstar born Benito Ocasio, kicked off his No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí (I Don't Want to Leave Here) residency July 11 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, the island's largest indoor arena. The first nine dates were reserved for local residents only, as Bad Bunny, 31, wanted to pay tribute to his homeland. He'll continue his performances every weekend through Sept. 14 for shows that are already boosting tourism in Puerto Rico. At another show, the Grammy-winning reggaeton superstar invited actor Austin Butler to join him on stage, as seen in viral fan footage shared on social media. Austin Butler recalls trippy Bad Bunny concert after taking edible: 'My brain is in two movies' Butler explained to "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon that his concert euphoria wasn't just a musical high. "Somebody gave me an edible right before the show, and I thought that was a good idea at the time," Butler said. "It's like my brain is in two movies." Bad Bunny's concerts are in support of his chart-topping sixth studio album, "Debí Tirar Más Fotos," which reflects the musical styles he grew up with and lyrically tackles the cultural identity and the socio-political challenges of the island. The album's all-stadium world tour kicks off Nov. 21 in Santo Domingo and ends July 22 in Brussels, Belgium. The tour does not currently have any dates in the continental United States. Bad Bunny Makes History With Another Week At No. 1

As is often the case, Bad Bunny is in charge of the Hot Latin Songs chart this week. The superstar is almost always in control of Billboard's ranking of the biggest Spanish-language tracks in the United States, as he is far and away one of the most successful names in Latin music history. As Bad Bunny earns another turn in first place with 'DTMF,' he makes history with his hugely popular track. 'DTMF' Reaches 30 Weeks at No. 1 'DTMF' holds at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart for its thirtieth nonconsecutive frame. Bunny's cut is just the fourth in history to rack up that many stays atop the most important Latin tally published by Billboard. Bad Bunny Joins Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Enrique Iglesias Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber hold the all-time record, as the remix of 'Despacito,' which saw the Canadian pop star joining the Latin powerhouses, led the charge on the Hot Latin Songs chart for 56 weeks. Enrique Iglesias, Descemer Bueno, and Gente de Zona kept 'Bailando' at No. 1 for 41 frames. Iglesias claims two of the four biggest No. 1s of all time on the Hot Latin Songs tally, as his collaboration with Nicky Jam, 'El Perdón,' also managed 30 stays at the summit. Bad Bunny May Soon Pass Enrique Iglesias 'DTMF' is performing well across a variety of metrics, and there's a great chance that it will earn a thirty-first turn at No. 1 next week. If it does, Bunny will break his tie with Jam and Iglesias and solely claim the third-longest-running champion of all time on the Hot Latin Songs tally – but he still has months to go before he ties for second place. Bad Bunny's 16 No. 1 Smashes 'DTMF' is one of Bunny's 16 No. 1s on the Hot Latin Songs chart, and it's his longest-ruling track. Taken from his most recent album Debí Tirar Más Fotos, it earned that distinction about a month ago when it broke out of a tie with 'Dákiti,' a collaboration with Jhay Cortez, which lived at No. 1 for 27 frames. A Top 10 Hit Across Several Billboard Charts At the moment, 'DTMF' appears on four of Billboard's Latin rankings, and it's a huge hit across all of them. In addition to the Hot Latin Songs chart, 'DTMF' also leads the Hot Latin Rhythm Songs ranking again. Bunny keeps his cut at No. 2 on both the Latin Streaming Songs and Latin Digital Song Sales rosters as well.
