Residents return home after bomb threat evacuation
Residents living in and near South Liberty Lane in Ashton Vale, south Bristol, were told to leave on Tuesday evening following reports a man had access to potentially explosive items.
A suspect was arrested at 19:10 BST on Tuesday and a bomb disposal team was deployed, Avon and Somerset Police said.
Residents were allowed to return home just after 03:00 BST when a precautionary 100m (328ft) cordon was lifted.
A report was initially made of a man acting suspiciously at an address on South Liberty Lane, police said.
A spokesperson for the force added that enquiries that led to the suspect's arrest are ongoing, and a police presence would remain in the area.
Ashton Vale Community Centre in Risdale Road opened to support affected residents, with about 50 people attending while they waited for updates.
They were later told they would not be allowed back to their homes on Tuesday evening, and were asked to find somewhere to stay or ask the council for assistance.
Sophie Rose, who has lived in the area for 27 years, said on Tuesday she had been told very little information from police and was "scared and tired".
Risdale Road resident Peter Poland said he had been told to leave his home at about 19:15 and had seen emergency services at the scene, including armed police.
Describing the atmosphere at the community centre, he said: "These guys have been amazing, there's the community spirit and we've won the football so all good."

People "rushed to help" a motorist this afternoon after her car collided with two others and "ended up on top of them" in a supermarket car park. Another witness said one of the cars had "ended up on top" of the two other cars. 2 Pennsylvania state troopers shot in Susquehanna County, suspect dead, police say
Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers are stable after they were shot Thursday morning in Susquehanna County, officials said. Pennsylvania State Trooper Rob Urban confirmed to CBS News the suspect died and both troopers were flown to a local hospital. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris is referring to this incident as an "ambush." Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins suffered "serious injuries" in the shooting and were airlifted to a hospital but are in stable condition, according to state police. The suspect was armed with a rifle and "refused to comply with commands," state police said in a statement Thursday afternoon. The suspect was shot and killed, and there is no threat to the public, according to police. "About an hour ago in Susquehanna County, two state troopers were shot. Lori and I are praying for those troopers," Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said at an event near Philadelphia. "I want you to know I've communicated with Col. Paris. He is on the scene. It is an active situation and at the conclusion of this event, I plan to head there myself." The shooting occurred in northeastern Pennsylvania around 11:15 a.m. A state police spokesperson, Trooper Logan T. Brouse, said the location was along Route 171 near the village of Thompson. That's about 40 miles north of Scranton. Sen. Dave McCormick said in a social media post that he was monitoring the developing situation. He also expressed empathy for the troopers who were shot. "Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge," McCormick posted. U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan said on X that he was "relieved to hear the troopers involved in today's incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition." Data analyzed by the CBS News Crime Unit shows at least 50 law enforcement officers have been shot in ambush attacks so far this year — on track to exceed the 2024 total of 80. The FBI is studying the trend and interviewing both victims and suspects.

Riverside man charged with waving gun at motorist at Western Springs Mariano's
A man was charged in connection with an incident that prompted a large police presence at the Mariano's store in Western Springs, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon. Around 1:20 p.m., the Western Springs Police Department alerted residents to avoid the area near the store, but did not say what they were investigating. It was later revealed on Thursday that a man, identified as Ricardo A. Rivera, of Riverside, Illinois, allegedly waved a gun at another motorist in La Grange. Later, he was reported entering the store, located in the 4700 block of Gilbert Avenue. The incident caused the store to close temporarily while police searched for the suspect. Rivera was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault. He is scheduled to appear at a pre-trial hearing on Friday.
