Berkshire tourist tells of sombre atmosphere in Rome following death of Pope
A British tourist who had travelled to Rome for Holy Week has spoken of the sombre atmosphere in the city following the death of Pope Francis.
Antoni Bohdanowicz, 39, from Berkshire, had come to the Italian capital with his wife Jelena and her family as part of a pilgrimage as a tribute to her late mother.
The couple, who attended the Easter Sunday service in St Peter's Square, said they were shocked by the late pontiff's appearance as he greeted pilgrims and tourists from the popemobile.
'He was in an awful state on Easter Sunday,' Mr Bohdanowicz told the PA news agency from Rome.
'Everybody was aware of his health, but the atmosphere was quite joyous.
'He had pilgrims from all over the world. I was standing next to Slovakians, Colombians and a group of pilgrims from Lesotho.'
Pope Francis, who was the first Latin American pontiff, died in the early hours of Easter Monday at the age of 88.
Mr Bohdanowicz, who is half Polish, said he returned to St Peter's Square to pay his respects.
'People on the square were touched, they were crying,' he said.
Mr Bohdanowicz, who works in procurement, said that although he had seen Pope Francis back in 2015 this was his first time attending Easter Sunday in Vatican City.
'My wife's family wanted to do a pilgrimage as a tribute to her mum who passed away 10 years ago,' he said.
'They want to do a special pilgrimage, because she always promised that she'd go to Rome for Easter but it never happened.
'I had the feeling that something was going to happen, either before or after the trip.'
The funeral of Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, with his body going on public display from Wednesday for mourners to pay their respects.
Mr Bohdanowicz, who is returning to the UK on Wednesday, said he hopes to pay his respects in St Peter's Basilica before he leaves.
Francis's death, following a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, prompted an outpouring of tributes across the globe.
The King, who met Francis earlier this month, said he was someone who had 'profoundly touched the lives of so many', while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he had been 'a pope for the poor, the downtrodden and the forgotten'.
His papacy emphasised the defence of the environment and partial openness to LGBTQ+ rights, and he was praised globally for his strong advocacy for the poor and marginalised.

UK agrees to check-free land border for Gibraltar but EU controls for flights
The UK has reached a deal with the EU over Gibraltar's border with Spain that will allow travellers to cross by land without checks. The agreement on a 'fluid border' clears the way to finalise a post-Brexit deal on the territory with the EU. But those flying into Gibraltar from the UK will face one check from Gibraltarian officials and another by the Spanish on behalf of the EU. An agreement for the future relationship between the EU and the UK in relation to Gibraltar is now a reality. It is a historic agreement. — Fabian Picardo (@FabianPicardo) June 11, 2025 This is because the land border will allow those arriving by air access to the European Schengen free travel area unchecked once they are in Gibraltar. The UK and Gibraltar insisted the changes would not affect the British overseas territory's sovereignty. The airport will operate under a model similar to London's St Pancras station, where passengers pass through both UK and French passport checks to board international trains. Goods and customs checks will also eventually be removed in both directions under the agreement. The move could also see airlines start to add flights to Gibraltar from countries other than the UK in a boost to tourism. Officials say a hard border would have been introduced under the EU's incoming exit and entry control system if no deal was reached, causing delays for some 15,000 people who cross the border every day as every individual passport was checked. Talks on rules governing the border have been ongoing since Britain left the European Union in 2020. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the previous Tory government left behind a situation that 'put Gibraltar's economy and way of life under threat'. He said the agreement was a 'breakthrough' after years of uncertainty. He said: 'Alongside the government of Gibraltar, we have reached an agreement which protects British sovereignty, supports Gibraltar's economy and allows businesses to plan for the long-term once again. 'I thank the chief minister and his government for their tireless dedication throughout the negotiations. The UK's commitment to Gibraltar remains as solid as The Rock itself.' Spanish foreign minister Jose Albares said the deal marked 'a new beginning' in the relationship between the UK and Spain. He said that Spain 'will guarantee free movement of people and goods', adding that Gibraltar would now be linked to the Schengen Area with Spanish authorities controlling entry and exit. I have always said nothing about Gibraltar, without Gibraltar. — David Lammy (@DavidLammy) June 11, 2025 President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the deal. In a post on X, she said: 'It safeguards the integrity of Schengen and the single market, while ensuring stability, legal certainty and prosperity for the region.' Gibraltar's chief minister Fabian Picardo said the deal would 'protect future generations of British Gibraltarians and does not in any way affect our British sovereignty'. 'Now is the time to look beyond the arguments of the past and towards a time of renewed co-operation and understanding. Now the deal is done, it's time to finalise the treaty,' he said. On Wednesday evening, Sir Keir Starmer spoke with Mr Picardo and thanked him for 'his years of hard work, commitment, and leadership to reach an agreement'. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also had a phone call with Sir Keir, and congratulated the British PM because 'his Government had succeeded where others had failed'. The Conservatives have said they will carefully review the UK's agreement with the EU on Gibraltar's border to see if it crosses any 'red lines' the party set out during its own negotiations when in government. Shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel said: 'Gibraltar is British, and given Labour's record of surrendering our territory and paying for the privilege, we will be reviewing carefully all the details of any agreement that is reached.' Mr Lammy held talks with Gibraltar's leaders, members of the opposition and the business community before leaving the British overseas territory to head to Brussels on Wednesday morning. Gibraltar was ceded to the UK by Spain in 1713 and the population is heavily in favour of remaining a British overseas territory. The last time it voted on a proposal to share sovereignty with Spain, in 2002, almost 99% of Gibraltarians rejected the move. Gibraltar also hosts an RAF base at its airport and an important naval facility.

EU and UK reach accord on cross-border trade and travel in Gibraltar
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union and the U.K. announced Wednesday that they have reached an agreement to ease cross-border trade and travel in Gibraltar after years of post-Brexit wrangling over the contested territory at the tip of the Iberian peninsula. In a post on social media, EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič raised the deal as 'a truly historic milestone: an EU-UK political agreement on the future relationship concerning Gibraltar. This benefits everyone and reinforces a new chapter in the relationship.' Britain left the European Union in 2020 with the relationship between Gibraltar and the bloc unresolved. Talks on a deal to ensure people and goods can keep flowing over the Gibraltar-Spain border previously had made only halting progress. Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in 1713, but Spain has maintained its sovereignty claim ever since. Relations concerning the Rock, as it is popularly referred to in English, have had their ups and downs over the centuries. In Britain's 2016 Brexit referendum, 96% of voters in Gibraltar supported remaining in the EU. The tiny territory on Spain's southern tip depends greatly on access to the EU market for its 34,000 inhabitants. The British government said the agreement 'resolves the last major unresolved issue from Brexit,' while Spanish Foreign Minister José Albares said the deal was historic and marked 'a new beginning' in the relationship between the U.K. and Spain. He said that Spain 'will guarantee free movement of people and goods,' adding that Gibraltar would now be linked to Europe's free travel zone known as the Schengen Area with Spanish authorities controling entry and exit. The deal, which must be ratified by parliaments in Spain and the U.K., will remove all physical barriers, checks and controls on people and goods moving between Spain and Gibraltar, the EU said in a statement. In order to preserve The EU's free travel zone and borderless single market for goods, entry and exit checks will instead be conducted at Gibraltar's airport and port by both U.K. and Spanish border officials. The arrangement is similar to that in place at Eurostar train stations in London and Paris, where both British and French officials check passports. The U.K. and Gibraltar had previously resisted Spain's insistence that Spanish border officials be based at the airport, which is also home to a Royal Air Force base. An agreement was also reached Wednesday for visas and travel permits. The U.K. said that half Gibraltar's population crosses the border each day and that without an agreement, new EU entry-exit rules mean every one would have to have their passports checked. The British government hailed the deal as a win in Prime Minister Keir Starmer's attempt to reset relations with the EU, five years after the U.K.'s acrimonious departure from the bloc. The U.K. said the agreement 'does not impact sovereignty' and ensures 'full operational autonomy of the U.K.'s military facilities in Gibraltar.' Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez noted that Spain maintains its claim of sovereignty over Gibraltar. 'After three centuries of no progress, the EU, the United Kingdom, and Spain have reached a comprehensive agreement that benefits citizens and our bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom. All this without renouncing Spanish claims to the isthmus and the return of Gibraltar,' he said on the social network X. Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo also hailed the agreement and said it 'will bring legal certainty to the people of Gibraltar, its businesses and to those across the region who rely on stability at the frontier.' —- Lawless reported from London, Naishadham from Madrid.
