Tata's Nelco to roll out Eutelsat OneWeb LEO satellite services in India
In a statement released yesterday, Eutelsat Group said OneWeb India Communications—the Indian subsidiary of Eutelsat—will collaborate with Nelco to provide secure, low-latency LEO connectivity for customers on land, at sea, and in the air.
The service coverage will extend across India's borders, territorial waters, and remote regions, enabling a wide range of secure government and enterprise applications.
These capabilities will strengthen India's digital infrastructure and national security, while ensuring reliable connectivity in underserved and hard-to-reach areas.
Nelco is well geared to offer these services to its customers as soon as the OneWeb LEO services become commercially operational in the country, the statement noted.
Neha Idnani, Regional Vice President for APAC, Eutelsat and Director of OneWeb India said the agreement strengthens the group's strategic footprint in one of the world's most dynamic and fast-growing connectivity markets and underscores our commitment to supporting India's digital and security ambitions.
According to PJ Nath, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nelco, the partnership marks a significant step in enabling reliable, secure, and high-speed communication solutions based on LEO services for critical sectors across land, sea, and air.
It should be noted, India's telecom major group Bharti is a major shareholder in Eutelsat OneWeb.
nterestingly, Bharti Group's telecom arm, Bharti Airtel Ltd, has also partnered with Elon Musk's SpaceX to market the Starlink satellite internet service in India.
An agreement between Bharti Airtel and SpaceX was inked some time ago to explore the distribution of Starlink equipment through Airtel's retail stores, offer Starlink services to business customers via Airtel, and connect communities, schools, and health centres, among many others, in even the most rural parts of India.
By adding Starlink to its portfolio alongside its existing alliance with Eutelsat OneWeb, Bharti Airtel aims to expand nationwide connectivity and reach underserved areas with limited or no coverage, the company had said earlier.
A Bharti Airtel official told that the Indian market presents a huge opportunity for both satellite connectivity providers.

Centre may ban all forms of real money games, penalise influencers promoting them
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has drafted a legislation which could place a blanket on all online gaming services – where users can play games after depositing money, in hopes of making more money – owing to growing concerns about alleged money laundering through these services, and their harmful societal impact, The Indian Express has learnt. The proposed law is believed to be titled 'The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025' and is understood to have received the Cabinet's approval. Although, it is worth noting that the deliberations in the legislation are currently in the draft stage, and its proposals are open to changes. The Bill has been drafted over national security concerns related to online gaming platforms, including the use of digital wallets and cryptocurrencies for money laundering and illicit fund transfers, these platforms serving as potential messaging and communication grounds for terror organisations, and offshore entities circumventing Indian tax and legal obligations, among others. As per the current version of the draft law, the government will prohibit any person from offering online games in India, failing which they could be imprisoned for up to three years, and penalised Rs 1 crore. Those promoting such platforms, such as social media influencers, may also face jail time of two years, and a penalty of Rs 50 lakh. The government may also prohibit banks and financial institutions from facilitating financial transactions on such platforms. The IT Ministry did not respond to a request for comment. A change in approach The Bill, in its current version, is a sharp departure from just about two years ago, when in April 2023, the IT Ministry had introduced rules for online gaming, which were largely seen as pro-industry. However, those rules proved difficult to implement due to potential conflict of issues, as the rules envisioned creating a self regulatory structure, which could have been influenced by the industry. As such, they remained stuck in limbo, even as national security and socio-economic concerns due to such platforms gained traction. If the draft Bill is implemented in its current form, it will be a death blow to the online gaming industry in the country, which is projected to be a $9 billion market by 2029. The industry has also faced a 28 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST), with proposals to increase the tax on these services to as high as 40 per cent, this paper had earlier reported. According to a report by FICCI and EY from March 2025, online gaming companies in India collectively earned a revenue of close to $2.7 billion in 2024. These companies typically make money by taking a cut from a user's winnings. As per the report, more than 155 million Indians engaged with real money gaming sub-segments such as fantasy sports, rummy, poker and other transaction-based games in 2024, marking a 10 per cent increase over 2023. On an average, around 110 million people played these games daily. The Bill is also understood to have envisioned the creation of a central authority to promote competitive e-sports in the country, while ensuring overall compliance with the law. The Centre will also recognise, categorise and register 'online social games' with the authority and facilitate the development and availability of online social games for recreational and educational purposes. Online social games may have an option to accept payment in the form of a subscription fee or access fee, as long as it is not in the form of a stake or wager.

Indian Oil to supply sustainable aviation fuel to Air India; MoU inked to set the ball rolling
Tata group airline Air India and India's largest refiner and fuel retailer Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) have inked a memorandum of understanding, laying the groundwork for supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) manufactured by IOC to Air India. This is the first agreement between an Indian airline and a fuel supplier with respect to SAF, a biofuel that is expected to be a key pillar of the aviation sector's decarbonisation efforts over the coming years and decades. The initial agreement between IOC and Air India comes close on the heels of the refiner receiving international certification for production of the biofuel from used cooking oil at its Panipat refinery. Although the agreement is an initial one, executives in the two companies expect it to translate into a firm SAF supply pact over the coming months. By the end of this calendar year, IOC will have the capacity to produce 35,000 tonnes per year of SAF from used cooking oil, which will be sourced from large hotel chains, restaurants, and sweets and snacks majors like Haldiram's, which usually discard cooking oil after single use. IOC became the first company in India to receive the ISCC CORSIA certification for SAF production at its Panipat refinery in Haryana. ISCC CORSIA is a certification system for compliance with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) criteria for SAF. It is a prerequisite for commercial SAF production. According to IOC, the certification also sets a benchmark for other domestic refiners and industry players to scale up SAF production. SAF is a biofuel that is produced from sustainable feedstocks and has chemistry similar to conventional aviation turbine fuel (ATF) or jet fuel, which is derived from crude oil. This means that existing aircraft engines can easily use the SAF-ATF blend. For instance, Airbus claims that all its aircraft are capable of flying on a maximum 50 per cent blend of SAF and conventional fuel. Various Indian airlines have already operated successfully a few test and demonstration flights using jet fuel doped with SAF in various proportions. According to aviation industry and energy experts, SAF alone is likely to account for over 60 per cent of the global aviation industry's decarbonisation efforts. The year 2027 will be an important one for adoption of SAF globally with the mandatory phase of CORSIA kicking in. CORSIA, which applies to international flights, would require airlines globally to offset any growth in carbon dioxide emissions beyond the 2020 levels. Using jet fuel blended with SAF is one of the ways through which carriers can keep their emissions under permissible levels. India, too, will have to comply with the mandatory phase starting 2027. In line with the CORSIA framework, India's National Biofuel Coordination Committee (NBCC) has set the initial indicative targets for blending of SAF with jet fuel 2027 onwards, starting with international flights. The indicative targets are: 1 per cent blending in 2027 and 2 per cent in 2028. The government is expected to announce SAF blending mandates for domestic flights in India as well, but only after blending for international flights begins 2027 onwards. 'By integrating certified green fuels into commercial operations, Indian Oil and Air India are together reinforcing India's position as a front-runner in sustainable aviation and energy transition. Through this MoU, IOCL and Air India aim to collaborate on the supply of SAF to meet CORSIA targets for international flights, ensuring a reliable, transparent, and sustainable fuel supply to support both companies' environmental goals,' Air India and IOC said in a statement. According to Air India, the MoU is part of the airline's efforts that align with India's broader push for green aviation, which includes blending regular jet fuel with SAF, and development of supply chains for the biofuel across the country. As part of its broader strategy to achieve the International Air Transport Association's target of net-zero emissions by 2050 and comply with CORSIA obligations, Air India is actively pursuing initiatives in operational efficiency, low-carbon emissions, and SAF. While IOC has already received the certification for the used cooking oil pathway for SAF production, the company is also working on setting up units based on the alcohol-to-jet pathway, which involves using ethanol as a feedstock to make SAF. A few other companies in India are also working to build units based on the various SAF manufacturing pathways.
