The new Citroën C3 is practical, comfortable and fuel efficient

Mail & Guardian14-05-2025

Modern and assertive: The new C3 has managed to give a big car feel to a small car. (Lunga Mzangwe/M&G)
The Citroën team has punched above its weight with the design of the new C3.
It is modern and assertive. The front looks pretty and bold and has thin, curved-shaped headlights that are connected by a strip with the Citroën badge in the middle of it, but also moulded into that strip.
While the front was bold and made me feel as if I was looking at a bigger car, the back looked boxy, and that's where reality does set in that this is a small car. The roof rails look interesting and add to the mirage that this is not a small vehicle.
The C3 reminded me of the Nissan Magnite, which is a direct competitor to the former.
Inside, the steering wheel looks and feels good, the digital driver display is clear and to the point, with no complications, while the 10-inch infotainment with wireless Apple Play and Android Auto feel modern and are quite impressive.
The door pockets of the car in front are quite big and the back ones are also sufficient.
The boot space is decent and deep enough to load stuff for a long distance or fit several bags of groceries after shopping.
The vehicle is comfortable and spacious. I took four members of my family for a drive and it wasn't a squeeze for two adults, two children and me as the driver.
But there were certain features that made the vehicle feel rather outdated. For example, the central locking system does not have a button to press for locking.
I was in the C3 Max Turbo 6AT, which sports a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. But the automatic gear selector has the same design as those in older cars, making it aesthetically unpleasing.
Overall, the cabin was open and functional.
In the week that I had the car, the C3 did not in any way feel like a small car. While it is categorised as a hatchback, the vehicle seems more like a compact SUV given its high ground clearance.
Once you get moving, the car has a punchy performance with a great fuel economy for those who want to feel the rush but still want to save on petrol.
The 1.2-litre engine delivers 81kW of power and 205 Nm of torque. Paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the fuel consumption is about 6.3 litres/100km. On the manual variants, you can expect a lower fuel consumption.
My verdict on the car is that it is designed for real-world needs, practical, good looking, fuel efficient, comfortable — which makes it an ideal car for a young family. The car is different in all the right ways.
The Citroën C3 is available in three variants: a 1.2 PLUS 5MT that is priced at R249 900, 1.2 MAX 5MT that comes in at R259 900 and a MAX TURBO 6AT priced at R299 900.
All variants come with a two-year/30 000 km service plan and a a five-years/100,000km warranty.

Cape visitors set to thrill at Aldo Scribante Raceway

An exciting change to this weekend's third round of the Algoa Motorsport Club's Regional championship is the addition of the Cape Town-based Kaltron Formula Supercars that are making the trip to Aldo Scribante Raceway. The cars that run a 2-litre Opel Motor were all built by the late Owen Ashley and celebrate their 30th year of existence next year. They will take part in three races, with the first two being for championship points and the third being a fun race where they will be joined by local Supercar racers Peter Schultz and Tom Hugo. A strong field of 20 modified saloons will be in action and sees legendary racer Syd Lippstreu with his immaculate Toyota Celica moving from the Retro Classic class and joining the modified saloons for the first time. The battle up front should once again be between the class B cars of Ian Riddle in his VW SuperPolo and Ian Oberholzer in his Volvo 850 station wagon as well as relative newcomer Elan Buchman in a VW SuperPolo. In the Wide Horizon Advance Training-sponsored Coastal Challenge for historics, classics and retro classics is Brent Watts, who is making a welcome return to circuit racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway in his Nissan Skyline and is set to give the similar Skylines of usual frontrunners Rane Berry and Tom Hugo a run for their money. East London visitor Neil Stephen returns with the only Opel Manta in the country that is racing and joins a whole fleet of classic Ford Escorts, Anglias and Capris as well as a classic VW Beetle with Henry Adams behind the wheel. Included in the mix are the street and fine cars with Barry Buchman in his Mercedes A45S and Ayrton Pilz in a Renault Clio 3 RS. Dylan Grobler returns to action after a short break in the open motorcycle class on his new 600cc Yamaha R6 and will be up against fellow 600cc competitors Ethan Diener, Ruan van Zyl and Ashton Heideman in what promises to be an epic battle on track. Kiera Potgieter is also back after taking a nasty tumble at the last round of the championship during qualifying and joins fellow girl racers Emma Diener and Kirsty Oberholzer in the CBR 150/250 motorcycle class where they will be up against Craig Benn, Dylan Grobler, Ruan van Zyl, Rob de Vos and Anthony Lippstreu Racing is set to start at 10.15am tomorrow and there will be three heats per class including the Ingco 45-Minute race that ends off the day and is set to start at about 4.15pm. Upcoming events: June 7: Main circuit racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway, round 3; Dirt Oval Racing in East London June 8: Speedyquip Bikers Breakfast Charity Run to Thornhill Hotel June 10: Algoa Indoor Karting League racing at Baywest Mall June 14: Motocross Training Day at Rover Motorcycle Club; Slake Enduro at Zwartenbosch Golf Estate in Humansdorp June 15: Youth Day Charity Spinning & Stance at Aldo Scribante Raceway; Top End Run at East London Grand Prix Circuit June 21: EP Off-Road championship round 2 at Innibos Lapa; Regional round 4 of Dirt Oval Racing at PE Oval Track Raceway; Algoa Kart Club round 4 of regional & club championship June 27-28: ROK Karting Nationals at Algoa Kart Club. Dutch car-sharing firm plugs into Renault EVs with V2G technology

The global V2G market was worth $3.4bn (R60,694,874,240) in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80bn (R1,428,568,000,000). The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya models to France and Spain. MyWheels said 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged into We Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid. Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent renewable energy is fed into the system. 'Our research shows vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing electric vehicle fleet to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles,' said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she said.

Toyota Vitz range gets safety bump

As before, the Vitz remains powered by a 1.0 l three-cylinder petrol engine making 49kW and 89Nm of torque. This is fed to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, though the flagship XR can be ordered with an optional five-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). While straight-line performance is nothing to write home about — all models have a top speed of 160km/h — running costs are low, with Toyota claiming a combined fuel consumption of 4.4 l /100km for the manuals and 4.2 l /100km for the AMT. Now available at Toyota dealerships, pricing for the updated Vitz range is: 1.0 manual: R178,800 1.0 XR AMT: R224,900 1.0 XR manual: R209,900 Pricing includes a three-year/100,000km warranty and 60,000km service plan.
