Panthers named potential landing spot for free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore

USA Today4 hours ago

Should another homecoming between free agent Stephon Gilmore and the Carolina Panthers be in the works?
Bleacher Report analyst Kristopher Knox recently listed off the top remaining options for the NFL's cornerback-back needy teams. Still sitting out on the open market is Gilmore, who Knox traces back to the Panthers:
The Carolina Panthers should also be interested in bringing back Gilmore. The South Carolina product had a bit of a homecoming with the Panthers in 2021, his last Pro Bowl campaign.
Gilmore could provide a valuable bit of veteran leadership to a Panthers defense that is still rebuilding under third-year coordinator Ejiro Evero.
The Panthers acquired Gilmore in a trade with the New England Patriots during that 2021 campaign. While the Rock Hill, S.C. native and University of South Carolina Gamecock went on to appear in just eight games for the team, his short tenure was enough to earn him his fifth career Pro Bowl selection.
Gilmore, who was also linked to Carolina last offseason, has since gone on to play for the Indianapolis Colts (2022), Dallas Cowboys (2023) and Minnesota Vikings (2024).

Bills QB Competition Has Pre-Camp Leader

Bills QB Competition Has Pre-Camp Leader originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills are hosting a quarterback competition for anyone not named Josh Allen. Buffalo's franchise player has had quite the summer already: He signed a six-year, $330 million extension, got married to Hollywood actress Hailee Steinfeld and won his first MVP award. Allen is doing alright; he may have some of the best job security in the NFL. Advertisement A more uncertain job is that of his backup quarterback. Last year it was failed first-round draft pick Mitchell Trubisky in his first year in Buffalo. Thankfully because of Allen's durability, Trubisky only had to play more than a few snaps in one game: the regular season finale when Buffalo sat their starters. This offseason, he has faced Mike White in what has turned out to be an interested battle for the backup QB position. Last season was also White's first year with the Bills, but he only appeared in one game to Trubisky's nine on the year. In the battle for QB2, beat writer Matt Parrino noted how White has out-performed Trubisky at Bills' OTAs and is threatening to make a jump up the depth chart. Advertisement "White was better than Trubisky this spring - it's as simple as that," Parrino said. "He gets the ball out faster, has more zip on his throws, and is willing to take chances to make plays. "[GM Brandon] Beane said nothing is earned, and White will get an opportunity to compete with Mitch Trubisky for the backup spot this summer." So while it might be early, Trubisky could see his job snatched, which could mean bad news for his future with the Bills. The former No. 2 overall pick of the Chicago Bears in 2017 has not turned into anything like he was cracked up to be long-term. Outside of his Pro Bowl season in 2018, the North Carolina product has struggled to stay in the starting lineup at various stops. He joined the Bills for one season in 2021, then bounced to the Pittsburgh Steelers before being cut and signing back with Buffalo. Advertisement White joined the Bills last season after being cut by the Miami Dolphins which followed an ample amount of time spent mainly as a sub with the New York Jets. In 2024, White didn't do much in his limited action, going 3-11 for 28 yards in Buffalo's Week 18 game. Following this ringing endorsement, White appears to be the leader in the clubhouse as the Bills prepare to reevaluate the competition at training camp in late July. The former fifth-rounder in White could move up the ladder and slide below Allen on the depth chart, leaving the Bills with a trade or cut decision for Trubisky in the final year of his contract. Waterfront home developed by former Florida Panthers' star Ed Jovanovski for sale

Jovanovski, nicknamed "JovoCop", played for the Stanley Cup-winning Panthers in the 1990s and from 2011 to 2014, and is now a Panthers television analyst for Scripps Sports. A waterfront Boca Raton, Florida home developed by former Florida Panthers player Ed Jovanovski for his family is on the market for a thrifty $14.49 million after being reduced from its original list price. Jovanovski, nicknamed "JovoCop", played for the Stanley Cup-winning Panthers in the 1990s and from 2011 to 2014, and is now a Panthers television analyst for Scripps Sports. The Panthers won their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship on June 17, 2025. But Jovanovski is also a home developer, building a handful of homes in Boca Raton, including the one that's currently on the market at 989 Marble Way in the Sun and Surf Club community. Nick Gonzalez, a founding agent of the Delray Beach office of Serhant who is co-listing the home with Serhant agent Matt Moser, said Jovanovski originally designed the home for his family but sold it before it was finished last year to another buyer. That buyer is now reselling the nearly new five-bedroom home, which sits on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway and is within walking distance to the beach at Red Reef Park. "I think he was just able to capitalize on the market when it was there," Gonzalez said about Jovanovski selling the home. "I would say this house is one of the few out east that suits a family very well because of the number of bedrooms and the overall layout with a second-floor loft." The home was built in the British West Indies style, which combines British colonial architecture with open-space tropical design features, such as high ceilings, wrap-around verandas and shutters. Wealthiest communities in Florida: 40 celebrities and athletes who call this town home Gonzalez said the design sets it apart from other new construction in the community which is more modern with straight boxy lines and flat roofs. It has a cypress wood ceiling in the kitchen, which is equipped with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, a clubroom with a walk-in wine room, a 45-foot-long pool, a four-car garage and 119 feet of deep-water frontage on the Intracoastal. Another perk; it is less than two miles by boat to the Boca Raton Inlet. "This is the only community in Boca where you have the beach, a par 3 golf course and boating and Intracoastal access," Gonzalez said. "It's a cool little community and the homeowners association is voluntary." The current owners bought the house for $11.9 million in April 2024. After deciding it was a little too much space for them, they put it back on the market three months later with a list price of $17.9 million. That's since been reduced four times to the current price of $14.495 million. Gonzalez has had the listing for about two months. "This is a good example of where the seller came to the market a little too high and now we are down to a really good price," Gonzalez said. "There are good deals hidden out there." He said the home is one of the least expensive new construction homes in Sun and Surf because Jovanovski paid a lower price for the land, buying it in 2022 for $2.6 million. Jovanovski, a defenseman, was chosen by the Florida Panthers as the first pick in the 1994 draft. He has also played for the Vancouver Canucks and the then-Phoenix Coyotes before finishing his career with the Panthers. He made real estate news in 2016 when he sold a home he bought in 2011 for $5.2 million in the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club for $15 million. The sale set a new price record at the time for the community. Kimberly Miller is a journalist for The Palm Beach Post, part of the USA Today Network of Florida. Update on ex-Patriots QB Joe Milton's performance at Cowboys minicamp

The New England Patriots made a gamble when trading backup quarterback Joe Milton III, along with a seventh-round draft pick, to the Dallas Cowboys for a fifth-round pick. They essentially moved a promising young quarterback with three years left on his rookie deal for virtually nothing. That decision initially upset some fans, even with all of the excitement surrounding the potential of starter Drake Maye. It seemed like the Patriots were jumping the gun on a move that didn't need to be made in the 2025 offseason. So what has Milton looked like since the trade to Dallas? There has been a great deal of buzz and optimism surrounding Milton's potential throughout the spring practices. However, Tommy Yarrish noted the "Joe Milton experience" showing up at one particular minicamp practice. Milton's athletic traits are off the charts, but there are occasional off-target throws and indecisiveness from the pocket that can be frustrating at times. Yarrish wrote: "The Joe Milton experience was back today, with a couple errant throws and taking some time to decide on a target, but some ropes to with one on the move to Ryan Flournoy and another to Mingo in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown." Milton's inconsistent play is a big reason why he fell to the sixth round in the 2024 NFL draft. He has shown tremendous growth in his short time in the NFL, and his physical talent could ultimately pave the path for him to be a starter one day. Whether that will be with the Cowboys or not remains to be seen, especially with a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in Dak Prescott slotted higher on the depth chart. There's a good chance Milton ends up riding the bench the same way he would have done if he stayed in New England. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
