Clean up of A2 ahead of anti-litter campaign
An initiative to clear rubbish on a busy road near Dover is set to begin on Monday ahead of a campaign to prevent litter being dropped.
Some lane closures will be in place on the A2 as waste management company Veolia carry out clearance work over the next two weeks.
The company cleared 23 tonnes of litter from the road between the Duke of York and Whitfield roundabouts in 2024 as part of a council initiative.
Dover District Council said litter costs taxpayers to clean up, looks unsightly and can endanger motorists and wildlife.
National Highways' head of customer journeys, Freda Rashdi, says across England the organisation has teams litter-picking "almost every day", which can involve lane closures.
She said this would be unnecessary "if people didn't drop rubbish in the first place".
A six-month awareness campaign aimed at discouraging littering by motorists will start in the summer.
New bins and signage will be installed at laybys on the A2 between Whitfield Roundabout and the Port of Dover as part of the scheme.
Ferries and nearby service stations will also display anti-littering posters, and messaging will be added to correspondence from ferry companies.
Jamie Pout, the district council's cabinet member for environmental services, said: "We hope that this joint campaign will draw attention to the blight of discarded litter on our roads and encourage drivers to use the bins provided or take their litter home with them."

Via a different commenter: 'pls be another ford win.' Said another: 'Ford is the best this year idk what y'all on about.' The post also noted Kevin Harvick's five Michigan wins on a Ford over that stretch. He won a total of six times in Michigan, but the first one took place way back in 2010 on a Chevrolet. Harvick retired in 2023 and now works for FOX Sports as an analyst, but previous Michigan winners who drove Ford in their victories there are still around, like Joey Logano and Chris Buescher. 'Serious' M11 crash in Essex leaves motorway closed to traffic
A major UK motorway is closed following a 'serious' crash tonight (Friday, June 6 into Saturday June 7). The M11 is shut to traffic southbound between Junction 6 and Junction 5 in Essex. The incident was first reported shortly after 11pm. It is currently unclear how long the closure will be in place for. Read the full story on Modern Car Collector A £2.2 million Koenigsegg Jesko hypercar, owned by private jet mogul Ameerh Naran, was slapped with a parking ticket this week after being left on a Kensington street while its owner dined nearby. Naran, the CEO of luxury aviation brokerage Vimana Private Jets, parked the ultra-rare Swedish hypercar on Derry Street, just outside the trendy Dishoom restaurant in West London. Moments later, a Kensington and Chelsea traffic warden issued a bright yellow parking charge notice (PCN), placing it squarely on the carbon-fiber bonnet of the car—an image quickly shared online. With a fine of up to £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within two weeks), the penalty is a small price to pay compared to the Jesko's jaw-dropping $3 million valuation. Powered by a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the Jesko produces 1,280 horsepower on standard fuel—or up to 1,600 hp on E85—and is capable of reaching 62 mph in under three seconds. According to his Instagram posts, Naran, 39, was enjoying lunch at the nearby Rooftop Gardens while the parking incident unfolded. Originally from Zimbabwe, the entrepreneur built his jet charter empire after studying automotive design, and later launched his own hypercar company, Naran Automotive. Despite his aviation focus, cars have remained central to Naran's identity. A former aspiring racing driver, he once told Forbes that he dreamed of building supercars since childhood. His clients—ranging from royals to ultra-high-net-worth individuals—spend up to $1 million a month on private travel, and often shop at elite brands like Harrods, Ferrara Diamonds, and Asprey London. This isn't the first luxury car to run afoul of Derry Street's strict parking rules. Comedian Michael McIntyre had his £195,000 Mercedes-AMG GT R towed from the same location in May after parking in a police-only zone.
