Sensex tumbles 400 points: Why is the stock market falling today?

Benchmark stock market indices fell sharply in early trade on Tuesday as investor sentiment soured following renewed tariff threats from US President Donald Trump, who warned of penalties over India's continued oil imports from Tapse, Senior Vice President (Research) at Mehta Equities, had indicated that the markets may continue to see a 'subdued to weak opening' amid the lacklustre trend in Gift Nifty. advertisementWhile gains in other Asian indices could offer some support, Tapse warned that 'nervousness may persist' after Trump's fresh threat to hike tariffs on India. He noted that Nifty bulls are likely to remain hesitant below the 25,000 mark, and a close below 24,473 could deepen downside risks. It may be noted that investor anxiety intensified after Trump threatened to substantially increase tariffs on Indian goods in retaliation for India's ongoing crude oil purchases from Russia, part of a larger geopolitical flashpoint that now threatens trade VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, called the threat a 'big risk' to India-US trade relations. If implemented, he warned, such tariffs could have a cascading impact on India's exports to the US—particularly in sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and engineering—and in turn drag down GDP growth and corporate earnings in FY26.'The market, still trading at elevated valuations, has not discounted such an eventuality,' Vijayakumar said. He added that India's strong response—calling the move 'unjustified and unreasonable'—indicates the government is unlikely to yield.'In the near term, markets are in uncharted territory and could react sharply if Nifty breaks its support at 24,500,' he said, advising investors to consider a partial shift to fixed-income assets as a geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainty dominating the narrative, analysts expect volatility to remain elevated throughout the week.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group. Paytm Shares Drop 1% As Antfin Plans To Sell 5.84% Stake Worth Rs 3,803 Crore

Last Updated: Paytm shares dipped 1% intraday as Antfin plans to sell its 5.84% stake worth Rs 3,803 crore via a block deal. Paytm Share Price: Paytm shares on Tuesday morning saw a dip of 1 per cent intraday ahead of its promoter Antfin (Netherlands) Holding B.V. planning to sell its entire 5.84 per cent stake worth Rs 3,803 crore in the company via a block deal. According to Moneycontrol report, the proposed sale involved up to 3.77 crore equity shares out of the total remaining shares of 5.84 per cent. The floor price has been fixed at Rs 1,020 per share, which is a 5.4 percent discount to Paytm's last closing price of Rs 1,078.20 on August 4 on the NSE, the MC report added. The MC report confirmed that Citi and Goldman are likely to be onboarded as placement agents. Shares are expected to settle on August 6 on a T+1 basis. Antfin has been steadily reducing its stake in Paytm over the past two years. Its latest stake sale, worth Rs 3,803 crore, follows a series of earlier block deals — including one in August 2023, when it offloaded shares worth around Rs 1,371 crore. The ongoing sell-off reflects Antfin's strategy to lower its exposure and aligns with broader regulatory sentiment concerning long-term Chinese-origin investors. Paytm's scrip was trading at Rs 1066.40 apiece with a fall of 1.09 per cent, against the previous close at Rs 1,078.20 apiece. The scrip opened at Rs 1,067.60 apiece. There has been a substantial recovery in Paytm shares in the past one year. The shares are up 113 per cent to above Rs 1000 apiece. Shares hit a record low after the RBI's action to ban Paytm payment bank due to regulatory compliance issues. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
