1 in 12 Employees Use at Least One Chinese GenAI Tool at Work Reveals New Analysis of 14,000 End Users

Business Wire17-07-2025
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Harmonic Security has today released new research revealing widespread use of Chinese-developed generative AI (GenAI) applications within the workplace. The behavioral analysis, conducted over 30 days across a sample of approximately 14,000 end users in the United States and United Kingdom finds that 7.95%, or nearly one in 12 employees used at least one Chinese GenAI tool.
Among the 1,059 users who engaged with Chinese GenAI tools, Harmonic Security detected 535 incidents of sensitive data exposure. The majority of exposure occurred via DeepSeek, which accounted for roughly 85% of the total, followed by Moonshot Kimi, Qwen, Baidu Chat and Manus.
In terms of what sensitive data was exposed, code and development artifacts represented the largest category, making up 32.8% of the total. This included proprietary code, access keys, and internal logic. This was followed by mergers & acquisitions data (18.2%), personally identifiable information (PII) (17.8%), financial information (14.4%), customer data (12.0%), and legal documents (4.9%). Engineering-heavy organizations were found to be particularly exposed, as developers increasingly turn to GenAI for coding assistance, potentially without realizing the implications of submitting internal source code, API keys, or system architecture into foreign-hosted models.
Alastair Paterson, CEO and co-founder Harmonic Security comments: 'All data submitted to these platforms should be considered property of the Chinese Communist Party given a total lack of transparency around data retention, input reuse, and model training policies, exposing organizations to potentially serious legal and compliance liabilities. But these apps are extremely powerful with many outperforming their US counterparts, depending on the task. This is why employees will continue to use them but they're effectively blind spots for most enterprise security teams.'
Paterson continues: 'Blocking alone is rarely effective and often misaligned with business priorities. Even in companies willing to take a hardline stance, users frequently circumvent controls. A more effective approach is to focus on education and train employees on the risks of using unsanctioned GenAI tools, especially Chinese-hosted platforms. We also recommend providing alternatives via approved GenAI tools that meet developer and business needs. Finally, enforce policies that prevent sensitive data, particularly source code, from being uploaded to unauthorized apps. Organizations that avoid blanket blocking and instead implement light-touch guardrails and nudges see up to a 72% reduction in sensitive data exposure, while increasing AI adoption by as much as 300%."
The data for this analysis was collected using insights from Harmonic Security Protect, which monitors user behavior around SaaS-based GenAI apps. All data was anonymized and sanitized prior to analysis. The dataset included file upload volumes, app usage frequency, and prompt-level detections of sensitive content exposure.

Watchmaker Swatch apologises for ‘slanted eye' ad after online backlash in China

Swiss watchmaker Swatch has issued an apology and pulled ads featuring images of an Asian male model pulling the corners of his eyes up and backwards in a 'slanted eye' pose. The images for the Swatch Essentials collection were widely condemned online in China, where many comments said they appeared to mimic racist taunts about Asian eyes. In an apology posted in both Chinese and English on its official account on the Weibo social media platform Saturday, Swatch said that it has 'taken note of the recent concerns' and removed all related materials worldwide. 'We sincerely apologise for any distress or misunderstanding this may have caused,' the statement said. It also posted the same apology on Instagram. Swatch Group did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further comment. Swatch, which also makes Omega, Longines and Tissot watches, is heavily exposed to China for revenue, with around 27% of the group's sales last year coming from the China, Hong Kong and Macau region. Revenue for the watchmaker last year slumped 14.6% to 6.74 billion Swiss francs ($8.4 billion) in 2024, hit by a downturn in demand in China, where Swatch said it was seeing 'persistently difficult market conditions and weak demand for consumer goods overall'.

Pop Mart's Labubus boost China's soft power as Beijing brands find global appeal

For years, China had an image problem it couldn't shake off — synonymous with cheap exports, heavy censorship, and a state shrouded in secrecy and scandal. That has been changing as the country strives to burnish its image, rising in soft power rankings, with domestic businesses helping Beijing secure a significant facelift. Chinese coffee chains are popping up in New York. Chinese video games are generating billions in revenue. Even Chinese makeup, or "c-beauty," companies are expanding into global markets. But the most surprising factor boosting China's cultural rise isn't a flying car, an AI model, or a bestselling game — it's a toy. Labubus are everywhere: Pop Mart's ugly-cute $30 keychain has been spotted on the bags of Rihanna and K-pop band Blackpink's Lisa, with the plushie attracting hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. Just a few weeks ago, Pop Mart opened its first store in Germany — the latest addition to its more than 500 stores across the globe. Pop Mart's viral blind boxes — items sealed in mystery packages — have become the hallmark of one of China's most aggressive international growth stories. The company has forecast a 350% year-on-year jump in profit in the first half of the year. Goldman Sachs estimates that over the long term, Pop Mart's sales could reach $11.3 billion globally, the same level as Lego sales. The company is even taking on Japanese legacy brands such as Sanrio and Bandai. In 2024, Pop Mart sales rose 107%, while Sanrio, home to Hello Kitty, reported a 45% jump. Pop Mart's success isn't a fluke. It's part of a deliberate strategy that's been capturing consumers' hearts. With several proprietary offerings and the addictive appeal of the blind box, the brand has tapped into the sweet spot of emotional spending at a time of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. "One of the key themes is IP, or chasing small pleasures," said Michelle Cheng, co-Lead of the Asia consumer research team at Goldman Sachs. "It's something the young generation loves — not just in China or Asia, but globally." Pop Mart isn't alone in boosting China's soft power. Video games, once tightly regulated by China's government, are now exploding in popularity. Black Myth Wukong, based on the Chinese folk story "Journey to the West," sold 20 million units in its first month globally, making it one of the fastest-selling titles of all time. Genshin Impact, a "gacha" game, where players spend in-game currency or real-world money to obtain virtual goods (named after Japanese "gachapon"), made $2 billion in its first year on the market, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. It now generates more revenue outside China than at home, with players in Japan and the U.S. leading the charge, according to data by Statista. Home-grown innovators are transforming China's image. Consultancy Brand Finance ranked the country second in its global soft power index this year, up a spot from 2024, overtaking the UK for the first time and sitting just behind the U.S. Brand Finance attributed the jump to China's strategic efforts at enhancing its global image, focus on sustainable development, stronger brands, as well as the country reopening to visitors after the pandemic. "Finally, China has become visible, and young people are no longer attaching negative brand perceptions to China," said Yaling Jiang, a consumer analyst. "The best outcome of these consumer products is that people can see through the negative filter of them being Chinese and see them for what they are." While the perceptions about the country are changing fast, it remains to be seen if a state that has historically taken a top-down approach to reshaping its image can allow its brands to speak for themselves.
