Netflix's new No. 1 K-drama flops at home, has zero Rotten Tomatoes, but beats Weak Hero 2 and Resident Playbook in just one day

Kang Ha Neul and Go Min Si's new K-drama Tastefully Yours debuted with an underwhelming rating in the domestic market, disappointing local fans of the Squid Game star who expected the new culinary romance show to be the next Business Proposal. But while that didn't happen, Netflix made the K-drama a huge hit, just two days in and two episodes out. The show has dethroned some of the reigning shows that dominated the non-English chart for days, including Weak Hero 2, Resident Playbook, and more.

On May 15, according to streaming data released by FlixPatrol, Tastefully Yours climbed to the second position among the most-watched shows globally, after Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar's The Royals, which has held the number one spot for a while now. According to K-media outlet Wikitree, Go Min Si's K-drama conquered the top spots in around 23 countries on the day after its premiere. However, in Korea, the show debuted with a poor 1.6% rating, far below and less than half of The Recruit 3, which ended its run in the same time slot. However, according to trends, the second episode of Tastefully Yours did record a rise in ratings but still remained below average.

Surprisingly, Go Youn Jung and Jung Jun Won's medical K-drama Resident Playbook, which is a spinoff of the popular show Hospital Playlist, is nowhere to be found in the top 10 list. The show is scheduled to premiere its finale episode on May 17, with a possible extended episode in the works. Park Ji Hoon's Weak Hero Class 2 also lost its hold. Son Suk Ku's Heavenly Ever After dropped to the number 10 position. The K-drama has been received well by both domestic and global audiences.
This is not the first time a particular show has failed to impress its domestic audience. Since the K-drama industry has started directly dealing with global platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Disney, and Netflix, the hold of cable networks has seen a massive drop, thus resulting in poor promotions and failing to attract viewers. One of the major reasons behind the tanking domestic popularity is that K-netizens feel the dramas have seen massive westernisation and have deflected from traditional Korean ideals.
The K-drama stars Han Beom Woo (Kang Ha Neul) and Han Sun Woo (Bae Na Ra) as brothers who turn into rivals, each trying to secure the chairman's seat, as their mother plans to hand over her multi-million dollar food corporation to the son who brings in their first 3-star rating at their respective diners. Kang's character goes to lengths, threatening local vendors, clashing with chefs, and even trying to steal a recipe from Mo Yeon Joo's (Go Min Si) restaurant, after noticing a similarity between one of his dishes and hers. Though both of them were different, he instantly got humbled after eating her version and started dreaming of reclaiming his restaurant after investing in hers, only to then deal with his brother who played smart and landed him in trouble.
The Netflix synopsis of the show reads, 'Driven to claim top culinary honors, an arrogant heir meets a low-profile but stubborn chef whose recipes astonish him — sparking an unlikely romance.'

Javed Akhtar says daughter Zoya is a tougher taskmaster than son Farhan Akhtar: ‘Dono alag tarah ke films banate hain'

Lyricist Javed Akhtar is one of the most prolific writers in the industry and has worked with several directors in the course of his decades-long career in Bollywood. In an interview with The Lallantop, Javed was asked about the experience of working with his children, Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar, on their respective films. Javed candidly shared how it is never easy when it is with them. (Also read: Kangana Ranaut gave written apology, asked Javed Akhtar in court: 'Aap meri agli picture mein gaane likhenge?') During the interaction, when Javed was asked about which one of the two is a tougher taskmaster, he said, 'Dusro ke liye kaam karna asaan hain apne bachho ke liye bada mushkil hain. Unko aisa nahi hai ki hamara baap hain toh hum kuch kahe nahin. Humein toh kuch kehna hi hain. Zoya tough taskmaster hai (It is easier to work with others than with my own children. They will not spare me just because I am their father. They will say something. Zoya is the tough taskmaster).' He went on to add how their films are so different from one another. 'Dono hoshiyaar hain aur dono alag-alag tarah ke film banate hain. Common nahi hain. Ab jis tarah ki film Farhan banate hain Zoya nahi bana sakti. Jis tarah ki Zoya banayi hain Farhan nahi bana sakta. Unka definitely alag-alag school hain. Both of them are doing well (The two of them know their work and make different films. They are not common. The kind of films Farhan makes cannot be made by Zoya and vice versa. They definitely come from different schools).' Farhan is all set to make Don 3 with Ranveer Singh. Meanwhile, Zoya co-produced the feature film Superboys of Malegaon and the docu-series Angry Young Men, which was based on Salim-Javed. Her last directorial venture was Netflix's The Archies.

Diddy trial: 3 new celebrity names come up as ex-assistant Mia makes damning revelations

Three new celebrity names have come up during Sean 'Diddy' Combs' federal sex-trafficking and racketeering trial. The names came up during the testimony of Diddy's ex-assistant Mia, who worked for the rapper from 2009 to 2017. Mia's text messages about A-listers were shown to jurors. Mia, who testified anonymously under the pseudonym, texted the Bad Boy Records founder on March 8, 2019, asking him to watch the Netflix show 'Love' by director Judd Apatow, the New York Post reported. In another text Mia sent Diddy on May 14, 2020, she spoke about the death of record executive and media mogul Andre Harrell, the man who is often credited with discovering the 'I'll Be Missing You' rapper. 'Puff my heart is broken about Dre. I've spent all week crying for you as well," Mia texted Diddy. Mia later also texted Diddy about actor Chad Boseman's death. Diddy replied, "How are you? Yeah, life is crazy." Mia shared various other details about Diddy during the trial. At one point, she said that Diddy placed a tracking device on his on-and-off girlfriend Cassie Ventura's car. "He's stolen my phone many times, he's stolen Cassie's phone many times," Mia told the jury. "He's put tracking devices on her car. I'm not sure what he's capable of. I was terrified.' Mia told the jury that Diddy allegedly sexually assaulted her multiple times. Diddy's defense attorney Brian Steel pressed Mia about why she did not accuse the rapper of sexual assault during settlement talks in 2017 for unpaid wages. Mia claimed that she originally asked for $10 million for bonuses, severance and overtime that Diddy allegedly owed her, and never paid. However, she settled during mediation for $400,000 – an amount that was split with her attorneys in 2017. Mia further claimed that she did not know that sexual assault could be used in settlement negotiations, adding that it was in 2024 that she discussed the sex assault claims with prosecutors for the first time.
