PM Modi Reaffirms Strong India-Maldives Ties, Says ‘Neighbourhood First'
PM Modi stated that Nasheed has always been a strong advocate of "deeper friendship" between India and the Maldives.
In a post shared on X, PM Modi stated, "Met the former President of Maldives, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed. He has always been a strong advocate of a deeper India-Maldives friendship. Spoke about how the Maldives will always be a valued pillar of our 'Neighbourhood First' policy and Mahasagar vision. India will keep supporting the Maldives through capacity building and developmental cooperation."
Earlier, PM Modi met People's Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla and expressed India's commitment to supporting capacity building in the Maldives. PM Modi termed the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis a "welcome step" for bilateral ties.
"Met Mr. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the People's Majlis. Talked about the deep-rooted India-Maldives friendship, including the close relationship between our respective Parliaments. The formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th Majlis is a welcome step for bilateral ties. India remains committed to supporting capacity building in the Maldives," PM Modi posted on X.
PM Modi also held a meeting with the Maldives Vice President, Mohamed Latheef on Saturday. During the meeting, the two leaders spoke about key pillars of the India-Maldives friendship.
Following the meeting, PM Modi in a post on X wrote, "Our discussion touched upon key pillars of the India-Maldives friendship. Our nations continue to work closely in sectors like infrastructure, technology, climate change, energy and more. This is greatly beneficial to our people. We look forward to deepening this partnership in the years to come."
PM Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday for a two-day state visit after concluding his visit to the UK. This is Prime Minister Modi's third visit to the Maldives - he had visited the Maldives in 2018 and 2019, earlier - and the first by a Head of State or Government to the Maldives during the Presidency of Mohamed Muizzu, which began in November 2023.
During PM Modi's visit to Male on the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, several agreements across diverse sectors were signed on Friday, which reaffirmed the bilateral partnership between India and Maldives, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
PM Modi and President Muizzu also jointly released commemorative stamps to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives.
Strengthening the bilateral ties between India and Maldives was reaffirmed by PM Modi and President Muizzu by handing over 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale, Maldives, under India's Buyers' Credit facilities; inauguration of roads and drainage system project in Addu city in Maldives; inauguration of 6 High Impact Community Development Projects in Maldives; handing over of 72 vehicles and other equipment; handing over of two BHISHM Health Cube sets; and inauguration of the Ministry of Defence Building in Male.

PM Modi praises Mani Maran of Saraswathi Mahal Library for preserving ancient manuscripts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, commended the efforts of Mani Maran, the Tamil Pundit of the Saraswathi Mahal Library, to preserve ancient manuscripts. The Saraswathi Mahal Library has published 20 books written by him. He is also conducting research on a Monograph of the Sendalai Temple. Mr Modi said in every era of the country, there have been people who have dedicated their lives to this cause, and one such inspiring personality was Manimaran from Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur. 'He felt that if today's generation does not learn to read Tamil manuscripts, then this priceless heritage might be lost in the future. So, he started evening classes where students, working professionals, and researchers all came to learn,' Mr Modi said in the message broadcast. Manimaran taught people how to read and understand Tamil Suvadiyial, that is, palm-leaf manuscripts. 'Today, thanks to many efforts, many students have become proficient in this art. Some students have even started researching traditional medicine systems based on these manuscripts. Friends, imagine if such efforts happened across the country — then our ancient wisdom wouldn't remain confined within walls. It would become a part of the new generation's consciousness,' he said. He also recalled that the Gyan Bharatam Mission, announced in the Budget this year, was inspired by this very idea. Under this mission, ancient manuscripts will be digitised. Then, a national digital repository will be created where students and researchers worldwide can connect with Bharat's rich knowledge tradition. 'I urge you all, if you are involved in or want to join such efforts, please reach out to MyGov or the Ministry of Culture, because these are not just manuscripts. They are chapters of Bharat's soul that we must pass on to future generations,' he said.

‘Exercise Bold Kurukshetra 2025' begins in Jodhpur, strengthens India-Singapore defence ties
The 14th edition of the India-Singapore joint military drill, 'Exercise Bold Kurukshetra 2025', commenced on Sunday at Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Scheduled to run until August 4, the exercise aims to deepen defence cooperation and enhance operational synergy between the armies of the two countries. The joint drill will see the participation of India's Mechanised Infantry Regiment and the 42 Singapore Armoured Regiment of the 4 Singapore Armoured Brigade. This year's exercise is structured as a Table Top Exercise and Computer-Based Wargame, focused on validating mechanised warfare strategies under a United Nations mandate. Colonel Arjun Ganapathi, Commanding Officer of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment, is leading the Indian contingent, while Lieutenant Colonel Khiew Zhi Yoong, Battalion Commander of the 42 Singapore Armoured Regiment, heads the Singaporean side. The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of senior military officers, including Brigadier Pritam, Commander of 340 (I) Mechanised Brigade, and Colonel Wong Zeng Yu, Commander of the 4 Singapore Armoured Brigade, as chief guests. A symbolic handing over of the Regimental Flag from the Singaporean to the Indian contingent marked the formal transfer of operational responsibility, showcasing the spirit of collaboration and mutual trust between the two nations. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday signaled a possible revival of India-China business relations, saying both sides have shown interest in reviving economic engagement after years of tension.
