PM Modi praises Mani Maran of Saraswathi Mahal Library for preserving ancient manuscripts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, commended the efforts of Mani Maran, the Tamil Pundit of the Saraswathi Mahal Library, to preserve ancient manuscripts. The Saraswathi Mahal Library has published 20 books written by him. He is also conducting research on a Monograph of the Sendalai Temple. In his message through Mann Ki Baat on All India Radio (AIR), Mr Modi said while the foundation of Bharat's culture lies in our festivals and traditions, another vibrant aspect of culture was the continued documentation of the present and history. 'These manuscripts hold science, medical systems, music, philosophy, and, most importantly, a vision that can illuminate the future of humanity. Friends, it is our collective responsibility to preserve this extraordinary wisdom and heritage,' he said. Mr Modi said in every era of the country, there have been people who have dedicated their lives to this cause, and one such inspiring personality was Manimaran from Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur. 'He felt that if today's generation does not learn to read Tamil manuscripts, then this priceless heritage might be lost in the future. So, he started evening classes where students, working professionals, and researchers all came to learn,' Mr Modi said in the message broadcast. Manimaran taught people how to read and understand Tamil Suvadiyial, that is, palm-leaf manuscripts. 'Today, thanks to many efforts, many students have become proficient in this art. Some students have even started researching traditional medicine systems based on these manuscripts. Friends, imagine if such efforts happened across the country — then our ancient wisdom wouldn't remain confined within walls. It would become a part of the new generation's consciousness,' he said. He also recalled that the Gyan Bharatam Mission, announced in the Budget this year, was inspired by this very idea. Under this mission, ancient manuscripts will be digitised. Then, a national digital repository will be created where students and researchers worldwide can connect with Bharat's rich knowledge tradition. 'I urge you all, if you are involved in or want to join such efforts, please reach out to MyGov or the Ministry of Culture, because these are not just manuscripts. They are chapters of Bharat's soul that we must pass on to future generations,' he said.

‘Exercise Bold Kurukshetra 2025' begins in Jodhpur, strengthens India-Singapore defence ties

The 14th edition of the India-Singapore joint military drill, 'Exercise Bold Kurukshetra 2025', commenced on Sunday at Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Scheduled to run until August 4, the exercise aims to deepen defence cooperation and enhance operational synergy between the armies of the two countries. The joint drill will see the participation of India's Mechanised Infantry Regiment and the 42 Singapore Armoured Regiment of the 4 Singapore Armoured Brigade. This year's exercise is structured as a Table Top Exercise and Computer-Based Wargame, focused on validating mechanised warfare strategies under a United Nations mandate. Colonel Arjun Ganapathi, Commanding Officer of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment, is leading the Indian contingent, while Lieutenant Colonel Khiew Zhi Yoong, Battalion Commander of the 42 Singapore Armoured Regiment, heads the Singaporean side. The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of senior military officers, including Brigadier Pritam, Commander of 340 (I) Mechanised Brigade, and Colonel Wong Zeng Yu, Commander of the 4 Singapore Armoured Brigade, as chief guests. A symbolic handing over of the Regimental Flag from the Singaporean to the Indian contingent marked the formal transfer of operational responsibility, showcasing the spirit of collaboration and mutual trust between the two nations. The culmination of the exercise will include an impressive equipment display by the Indian Army, aimed at sharing capabilities and fostering greater tactical understanding. The drill is designed to improve interoperability, facilitate the exchange of best practices, and promote joint mission readiness. Exercise Bold Kurukshetra 2025 stands as a testament to the growing strategic alignment between India and Singapore, contributing to peacekeeping capabilities and regional stability. The ongoing cooperation highlights the commitment of both nations to maintaining a robust and responsive defence partnership in the Indo-Pacific region. It is worth noting here that in the past few years, India and Singapore have strengthened their defence ties. Last year, at the sixth India-Singapore Defence Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Singapore counterpart, and both agreed to step up defence cooperation and enhance industry cooperation, including in automation and artificial intelligence.

A beginning but with caution: Sitharaman hints at easing India-China economic ties; says 'we need a lot more interaction'

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday signaled a possible revival of India-China business relations, saying both sides have shown interest in reviving economic engagement after years of tension. Speaking at a Delhi event to mark the release of a book in honour of economist Shankar Acharya, the finance minister noted that "a beginning has been made" following external affairs minister S Jaishankar's recent visit to China. Sitharaman said stakeholders within India have been urging the government to ease investment restrictions on Chinese firms, and that Beijing has also reached out through diplomatic channels. "We need more access, and we need to have a lot more interaction, and possibly open some windows. And that's not just from our side, even the Chinese have been approaching through the MEA," she said. "There is something, some kind of a beginning, as to how much it will take us far; how far it will go is something we will have to wait and see. It might help the economy; however, a sense of caution would have to be built in," she added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? These restrictions came alongside the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. In recent months, however, both sides appear to be taking tentative steps toward normalisation. India resumed issuing tourist visas for Chinese nationals this week to advance Indian renewable projects. While China lifted its visa restrictions on Indian citizens in March. Jaishankar visited China recently, his first visit in six years, meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping as both nations work towards improving relations. The government had earlier made exceptions to allow Chinese professionals involved in key renewable energy projects to return. Sitharaman also highlighted progress in India's broader trade diplomacy, noting that bilateral trade talks with the US and European Union are advancing well. "It is bilateral trade which is taking priority over multilateral trade. On the bilateral trade front we are moving forward and we have seen bilateral agreements been signed in the last four-five years with Australia, UAE and the UK. Negotiations are progressing well with the United States as well as the European Union," she noted. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
