Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Attends Legends Clash Between Mohun Bagan Super Giant And East Bengal

Agartala (Tripura) :
A historic football clash between two legendary rivals, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, unfolded on Sunday at the Umakanta Mini Stadium, where Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha graced the occasion. The match, organised in memory of the Chief Minister's late father, Makhanlal Saha, as part of the Legends Cup, drew a packed stadium filled with enthusiastic spectators. The presence of veteran football icons turned the event into a nostalgic celebration of India's footballing heritage.
Every moment of the game was charged with excitement and energy, with fans reliving the golden days of Kolkata's famed football rivalry. After a gripping contest, East Bengal Legends emerged victorious, much to the delight of their supporters.
On Sunday, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan also faced in the other competition, the Durand Cup 2025 quarterfinals, where the former side emerged victorious and advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament which was played in Kolkata.
East Bengal prevailed 2-1 over Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a thrilling Durand Cup quarterfinal clash at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata, courtesy a brace of goals by Greek striker Dimitrios Diamantakos. Anirudh Thapa pulled one back for Bagan, but it was not enough to stop the 16-time Durand winners from making yet another semi-final of Asia's oldest football tournament.
It did not look all that rosy in the beginning, when in-form Moroccan striker Hamid Ahadad had to leave the field at the quarter-hour mark for the Red and Golds, after suffering an injury. However, Diamantakos, who replaced him, more than made up for the setback, as per a press release from the Durand Cup.
The two gaffers began the game with different strategies, with Bagan's Jose Molina deploying a traditional 4-4-2, while compatriot Oscar Bruzon of East Bengal went in with five in midfield, leaving Ahdad as the lone ranger upfront.
Both teams matched almost perfectly, lining up some of the best Indian footballers of the present time as well as five foreigners each in their roster.
East Bengal had the better of exchanges when the first water break was taken at the half-hour mark. Before it, a Miguel free-kick from just outside the Bagan box flew over the bar, while just after it, a through from Naorem Mahesh Singh saw Diamantakos ruled offside, after he had put the ball in the net.
East Bengal's persistence paid off when Bipin Singh was brought down inside the box minutes later, and the referee pointed to the spot. Diamantakos made no mistake putting it past a diving Vishal Kaith, who guessed right, but could not beat the placement.
A stung Bagan tried to equalise, but the nearest they came was when an Apuia strike in injury time ahead of the lemon break, went just wide of Prabhsukhan's outstretched dive and his right post.
Molina brought in Australian Jason Cummings in the second half in place of Pasang Dorjee Tamang, in an effort to get the equaliser. However, it was Diamantakos who got his second instead, after a well-constructed move.
Lalchungnunga, it was, who played the ball cross-field from his half to Edmund, who tapped it back on the volley to Miguel. The Brazilian playmaker received the ball in the middle of the Bagan half, changed track to take out one defender and found Mahesh with a forward ball. The Manipuri threaded a pass forward to Diamantako, lurking inside, who controlled and took a touch forward, before pulling the trigger with his left on the half-turn. The ball took a deflection off Spanish defender Alberto's legs and went in.
Kevin Sibille, East Bengal's Italian centre-back, then brought up a crucial goal-line save minutes later, off a Jamie Maclaren attempt from close range, to deny Bagan an opening, the Durand Cup press release added.
After a sustained spell of Bagan pressure, Liston found the diminutive Thapa unmarked and in space, just outside the Bagan box, from a corner. The Dehradun lad curled a right footer, and it went in through a maze of traffic in front of Prabhsukhan's goal. It was a one-goal game with 20 minutes left to play.
Molina then made a triple change in the 70th minute. Dimitrios Petratos, Dippendu Biswas and Deepak Tangri were brought in, in place of British defender Thomas Aldred, Sahal Abdul Samad and Thapa, respectively.
Bruzon responded with Souvik Chakrabarti, P.V. Vishnu and David Hmar in place of Mahesh, Bipin and Edmund. Molina then also played his final card in bringing in striker Suhail Bhat in place of defender Ashish Rai with less than 10 minutes of regulation time left.
Despite Bagan going all out and getting a few clear chances, East Bengal held on for a memorable win.

Durand semis: DHFC, more than a typical newcomer's story

Kolkata: Diamond Harbour FC offer more than a newcomer's fairytale. Born on April 15 — the Bengali New Year's Day — in 2022 and backed by the local Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, the club's meteoric rise from the humble Bata stadium ground in Maheshtala — a part of greater Kolkata — to gaining promotion to I-League this year has happened so quickly and so spectacularly that it has taken Indian football by storm. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This also looks magical in the current scenario of Indian football, characterized by chaos. At a time when future of the country's top league is shrouded in uncertainty and many Indian Super League clubs contemplating shutdown, Diamond Harbour FC represent the essentially 'other' and more positive side of the story. They are Indian football's new aspirations, not only ready to break into the established order but determined to break new ground as well. "Three years ago, we were playing in Batanagar against Port Trust (in the first division of Calcutta Football League). And three years later, we are here in the semifinals of the Durand Cup and preparing to play against East Bengal, one of the best teams in India. This is quite a journey, right?" Kibu Vicuna, the team's veteran Spanish coach, said on Tuesday. Very few would doubt it. That match against Port Trust on July 26 in 2022, set the new kid on the block on a dazzling journey that saw them win the CFL first division and qualify for I-League 3 in their very first year, then clinching the I-League 2 title in 2024-25 and securing promotion to I-League, the second most important tier of Indian domestic football pyramid. DHFC have now set sights on winning the I-League and becoming the next team to book a place in the ISL through promotion. Vicuna — the man with the Midas touch — has supervised DHFC's transition from Day I with utmost care and conviction. "We had started from zero. I remember that we had to do trials because we didn't have players and it was very challenging. But at the same time the reward has been very high," recalled Vicuna, who had guided Mohun Bagan to their second I-League title in 2019-2020. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ahead of their I-League debut, they have bolstered the team with signings of Slovenian attacker Luka Majcen from Punjab FC, Brazilian forward Clayton Silva and Spanish defender Mikel Kortazar. "We are not only growing every season, we are learning every season about how to manage, how to play and how to challenge… We are going step by step and at the same time enjoying every step," the Spaniard maintained. "We are the only team to have played against three ISL teams in the Durand Cup. We are now in the semifinals. But we don't want to stay here. We want more in the competition." Manas Bhattacharya, renowned midfielder of the 80s, has been associated with Project DHFC since the first day, serving the club as its CEO. "We are here to stay," he said. Beyond the legacy of Mohammedan SC, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in the city, DHFC promose to arrive with a different alternative, ready to write their own story.

Durand semis: East Bengal look to clear DHFC hurdle

Kolkata: In this season of more fractious and perplexing moments in Indian football, East Bengal FC and Diamond Harbour FC embody a unique contest in the Durand Cup semifinals here on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now East Bengal have earned their place in the final four by ending Mohun Bagan SG's long reign in the derby duels and an 18-match unbeaten run at home. If days of being judged inferior to the arch-rivals have been settled, Oscar Bruzon is now ready to call it "the end of suffering" for his 'new' East Bengal. Diamond Harbour FC (DHFC) — a new kid on the block — are also showing that they are here to stay. In fact, the team under Kibu Vicuna has already achieved an unprecedented high that even Mohun Bagan and East Bengal couldn't reach — securing a semifinal berth in their Durand Cup debut. This, certainly, is the brave new world for the newbies. And this is precisely what's stopping Bruzon from taking the suggestion for granted that this contest is a mere step in his team's coronation as the Durand Cup champions. "When you get a good result, there is a big risk of drop (in performance) in the next game. So, there is work to do and we are not complacent. We need to be cool and calculative. Of course, support will be on our side. But it's going to be a tricky match against Diamond Harbour and we can't say (we are) favourites," Bruzon told reporters on Tuesday before taking his players to the training ground away from the media glare. There is another possible hurdle the East Bengal coach would like to cross with ease. Unlike Mohun Bagan, DHFC would come to enter the field as an unknown enemy. "We plan and prepare for every game trying to get the maximum details and analyze the opponents so that when our players come onto the pitch, they are aware of the idea of the game and which are the areas we need to control to beat them. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Our coaches have watched them play in the Kolkata league and we are getting information from them as well," Bruzon pointed out. Moroccan striker Hamid Ahadad — who was forced to leave the field against Mohun Bagan after suffering a muscle pull — turned up at the NCE ground in New Town later in the day but didn't train. DHFC may be a newcomer, in Vicuna they have a shrewd coach with ample experience in Indian football. Vicuna, who guided Bagan to their second I-League title in 2019-20, described his new team's progress to the semifinals in Asia's oldest cup football tournament as "thoroughly deserving". Aware that East Bengal have transformed significantly under Bruzon, Vicuna insisted that the Beautiful Game is littered with stories where the best teams do not necessarily end up having the last laugh. He then recalled his time in Poland as an assistant coach at Lech Poznan in 2015-2016 and how the team had orchestrated an upset in the Europa League. "We are a good team. If we were not, we wouldn't be sitting here talking with you all," Vicuna told reporters on Tuesday. "I remember the European Cup match when I was working in Poznan. Fiorentina were in the first position in Italy and we were last in the Polish league. And we ended up winning 2-1 in Fiorentina. In a football game, two teams are playing, not only one," Vicuna said, sending a warning to East Bengal. The onus is more on East Bengal as, post the derby win, Bruzon's side now faces the task of proving that this group is not only on a journey of self-improvement but is equally capable of reaching its destination and delivering on its promise.
