James Cameron shares Avatar 3 ‘hope' after debuting first footage
James Cameron has revealed his main 'hope' for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the blockbuster franchise.
The filmmaker, who recently shared the first verdicts on the film, is hard at work on the third Avatar film, which will be released in December, and on Thursday (3 April), released a first look at CinemaCon.
While the footage is not available to watch online, cinema exhibitors gathered in Las Vegas for the annual event were given 3D glasses to watch the clip, which has been described as 'dazzling'.
Variety reported that the footage introduced two new Na'vi clans. First up, were the Wind Traders, who soar in the sky using hot air balloons, and their enemies, the Fire People.
In the clip, the warring clans prepare for battle, with one Na'vi shown to be shot with a flaming arrow.
Speaking on a video provided for the panel, Cameron said that the main characters are 'put through the wringer' in the new film, with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) telling Neytiri (Zoe Saldana): ' 'We cannot live like this – we cannot live with this hate.'
Cameron also said that he 'hopes this film can provide a shot in the arm for theatre owners, as we're still struggling after the one-two punch of the pandemic and streaming'.
Cinema attendance has been down in recent years, but has been assisted in a big way by Cameron's previous Avatar film, Avatar: The Way of Water, which is the third highest-grossing film of all time behind Cameron's very own Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
Other blockbusters to have pulled the box office out of the slump include Barbie and Oppenheimer, which were released on the same day in 2023, and 2024's Dune: Part 2.
All eyes will be on Fire and Ash 's box office numbers when it's finally released on 19 December.
Cameron previously revealed what fans could expect from the new sequel, explaining that it will explore 'different cultures from those I have already shown'.
In the first and second parts of the franchise, viewers were introduced to two different Na'vi clans, the Omaticaya and the Metkayina.
In both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, the Omaticaya and the Metkayina clans are peaceful tribes and only retaliate when their land is threatened by humans.
However, Cameron has revealed that the next film will see the fiery side of these tribes, which 'will be represented by the 'Ash People''.
He told France's 20 Minutes: 'I want to show the Na'vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.'
'In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na'vi examples.' In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters.
'I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal.'
There will be two more Avatar films after Fire and Ash, and they will be released in December 2029 and December 2031, respectively.

Disneyland announces it is shutting down beloved ride as part of wave of changes at the park
Disneyland has revealed it is shutting down one of its beloved rides to make way for a new attraction. The California resort announced last summer that a new Avatar themed ride would be making its way to fans. But now it has emerged that will be at the cost of a beloved fan-favorite attraction; Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! The ride is set to close at the beginning at 2026 in order to make way for a new era of Disneyland. The current attraction whisks riders through scenes from the Monsters Inc universe as characters Mike and Sulley race through the streets of Monstropolis to rescue Boo. It was launched in 2006, allowing millions of guests to enjoy the 20-year run. Not only is Monstropolis getting a makeover, part of Disneyland California Resort's backlot where the ride is located will be reconstructed to immerse park-goers into the world of Avatar. However, unlike Florida's Disneyworld, this iteration will not be based on the original 'Avatar' film. Instead the area will become a visual recreation of ' Avatar: The Way of Water ' According to Disney Parks Blog and may even feature concepts from upcoming Avatar films. Concept imagery shows the headlining ride taking fans through the sparkling blue lagoons of Pandora. The area will be centered around the water, recreating the landscape of the film and allowing park-goers to feel fully immersed, as if they are Avatars themselves. Disney officials describe the addition as 'dynamic, intense and an emotional experience on a grand scale', the LA Times reports. An opening and construction timeline has yet to be released. But Park-goers who loved the Monsters Inc ride are mourning its closure. 'So disappointing. Why they would make an Avatar land is beyond me. Part of the appeal of DCA is it's better for littler kids. This was one of the anchor rides for that experience. More disappointment,' wrote X user Rami Elghandour. 'They should just give us a Monsters Inc. land instead,' said another user. Park-goers who loved the fan-favorite attraction are mourning its closure 'This sucks! Avatar fits ten times better in Animal Kingdom than DCA… transitioning from Hollywood Land to Avatar? Really? Disneyland set to close popular ride to make way for new attraction
Disneyland is set to close a popular ride to make way for a new Avatar -themed attraction. The resort will be saying farewell to Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! The ride will close in early 2026, Disney announced in a blog post on Thursday. The soon to be shuttered ride is based on Disney and Pixar's hit animated film Monsters, Inc., and has been around since 2005, according to D23, Disney's official fan club. For 20 years, guests have zipped around in a taxi in the fictional city of Monstropolis as they helped monsters Mike and Sulley return little girl Boo to her home. While Disney fans will no doubt be sad to see the ride go, a new adventure awaits with the California resort's Avatar destination. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro revealed the new attraction at Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The destination is based on the second installment in the Avatar film series, Avatar: The Way of Water. Guests will experience the fictional world of Pandora, an exomoon where the film is set. A Disney blog post from last August said guests 'will go on the adventure of a lifetime in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora and the beauty – and danger – that come along with the journey.' 'This new and thrilling excursion will bring all the action, excitement, and wonder of Avatar, taking guests all the way to the wide-open seas of Pandora.' It's unclear when construction will end for the attraction, as Disney has stated that it's still in the early stages of development. Coco fans will also be pleased to know Disneyland will be creating a new ride based on the 2017 Pixar animated film. The ride will be built near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier, using space that is predominantly out of guests' view at the moment. The resort said construction will begin this upcoming fall, but has yet to release an opening date.
