Cricket's Indian Premier League value surges to $18.5 billion: report
The world's richest cricket tournament has been a top revenue earner for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and in 2020 was estimated to generate more than $11 billion a year for the Indian economy.
According to U.S. investment bank Houlihan Lokey, which has valued several sports franchises around the world, the brand value of the 10-team T20 franchise tournament has seen a sharp rise of 13.8% to $3.9 billion over the past year.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who along with star player Virat Kohli won their first IPL title this year, have overtaken five-time winner Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to achieve a brand value of $269 million.
Mumbai is second with $242 million, followed by Chennai at $235 million.
The Houlihan Lokey report called the IPL "a global phenomenon" that has become more than just a cricket league.
"The IPL continues to set benchmarks in sports business. Franchise valuations have soared, media rights deals have reached record highs, and brand partnerships have diversified across sectors," Harsh Talikoti from Houlihan Lokey, said in a statement.
"The league's ability to attract global investors and sponsors reflects its status as a premier sports property with enduring appeal."
Bengaluru beat Punjab Kings for the title at the world's biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad in June to conclude the 18th edition of the league.
The report said the 2025 final had more than 678 million views on the official streaming platform JioHotstar, surpassing the India-Pakistan clash during the Champions Trophy in February this year.
The IPL, which is broadcast around the world and features top international stars such as Australia's Pat Cummins and England's Jos Buttler, mixes sport and show business in a glitzy format, with a number of teams fronted by Bollywood movie superstars.
Since it launched in 2008 it has inspired a range of other franchise-based leagues in India in sports as diverse as boxing, badminton, poker and kabaddi, and spawned copycat cricket tournaments elsewhere.

Tesla enters Indian car market with Mumbai showroom
US electric vehicle giant Tesla has launched its first showroom, in India's largest commercial city of Mumbai. It represents the company's opening move into the huge Indian car market. Elon Musk's firm used a media event on Tuesday to showcase its model Y cars, with prices starting at a relatively expensive 6 million rupees, or 70,000 dollars. India is the world's third-largest car market, after China and the US, but electric vehicles account for only a small fraction. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers says electric vehicle sales in fiscal 2024 were around 100,000 units. Media reports say another showroom is expected to open in New Delhi by the end of July. Tesla's move comes as the company faces slumping international sales. Many consumers have been boycotting the brand over Musk's political activities, while global competition is intensifying.

'World's oldest marathon runner' dies at age 114 in road accident
India's Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest distance runner, has died in a road accident at age 114, his biographer said Tuesday. Singh, an Indian-born British national, nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado," died after being hit by a vehicle in Punjab state's Jalandhar district on Monday. "My Turbaned Tornado is no more," Fauja's biographer Khushwant Singh wrote on X. "He was struck by an unidentified vehicle ... in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja." Singh did not have a birth certificate but his family said he was born on April 1, 1911. He ran full marathons until the age of 100. His last race was a 10-kilometer event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon at the age of 101, where he finished in 1 hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. He became an international sensation after taking up distance running at the ripe old age of 89, after the death of his wife and one of his sons, inspired by seeing marathons on television. Although widely regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner, he was not certified by Guinness World Records as he could not prove his age, saying that birth certificates did not exist when he was born under British colonial rule in 2011. Singh was an Olympic torchbearer at the 2004 Athens Games and the 2012 London Games, and appeared in advertisements with sports stars such as David Beckham and Muhammad Ali. His strength and vitality were credited to a routine of walks and a diet including Indian sweet laddu packed with dry fruits and home-churned curd. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media. "Fauja Singh was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness," Modi wrote on X. "He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world."
