In conversation with IOL, Kananda shared plans to expand the concert's impact beyond the event through year-round workshops on financial management and mental health for artists, extending to rural villages to discover and empower women.
'I love the fact that what is infused this time around with my involvement is that we're not just going to celebrate and have fun on August 24.
'We're putting together workshops that empower women, and we're going to do storytelling. We're going to empower artists in areas ranging from financial management to mental health because that is an area of our society that is often neglected."
Kananda shared that the initiatives will reach deep into rural villages to discover and celebrate women with creative genius, ensuring that empowerment is not limited to urban areas.
The Malibongwe Arts Festival Foundation's commitment to creating lasting legacies for women in the creative sector.
Kananda detailed that the workshops are aimed at educating artists and DJs about royalties and needle time, emphasizing the business aspect of entertainment to prevent artists from facing financial struggles later in their careers.
'We need to empower artists on how to look after their brands, how to look after their money, and how to have a lasting legacy and lasting impression,' said Kananda.
Kananda shared a vision for fostering women leaders by showcasing multiple positive characteristics from various influential women rather than relying on single role models.
She emphasized the importance of challenging societal perceptions that confine women to traditional roles and promoting self-love and wisdom-seeking among young women. 'I'm hoping that through these partnerships, as we showcase and build this longevity, we begin to showcase a quality of a human being.'
For years, Kananda has dedicated her life to building platforms for women's advancement across various sectors, including health, education, media, leadership, and beyond.
She is a strong advocate for diabetes awareness, aiming to change the public perception by renaming it from "sugar disease" to emphasize its dangers.
Her lived experience as a health and wellness champion, including over a decade on South African airwaves simplifying health for the masses, makes her a fitting steward for a festival that exists to celebrate and empower.
She holds an executive role at 360 Global Solutions, an investment company owned by NUMSA. She does work in advocating for the recognition of traditional African medicines and the development of South African-based vaccines.
Kananda is committed to living a life of purpose, with her goal being to be a symbol of hope and to bring value through their various endeavors.
The Tribute to Women concert takes place at Marks Park in Emmarentia on August 26. Makhadzi, Thandiswa Mazwai, Mi Casa, The Soil, Lloyiso, Ami Faku, and Makhadzi.

Africa's basketball revolution captured in new docuseries
The documentary series Origin: The Story of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) is set to make its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Festival will take place on 8 September 2025. This significant event marks a major milestone in chronicling the rise of a basketball league that has transformed the sports landscape across Africa. Co-directed by Tebogo Malope and co-produced by Akin Omotoso, Origin captures the journey of the BAL. BAL is the NBA's first collaboration to operate a league outside North America. The series follows the league's inaugural season and playoff tournament, featuring 12 top club teams from the continent. The BAL is the brainchild of visionaries Amadou Gallo Fall, the league's president, and Masai Ujiri, the co-founder of Giants of Africa and a former executive of the Toronto Raptors. Together, they realised a decades-long ambition to establish elite basketball competition across Africa. 'For Africa, this league is more than sport, it's a symbol of belief and resilience,' Ujiri stated. 'It elevates African talent to the global stage. I'm proud this journey will reach the world through this series.' His words will deeply resonate with South African audiences, who have watched the league's growth firsthand in Pretoria and beyond. The BAL's fifth season playoffs and finals were held at SunBet Arena in Pretoria in June 2025. It drew in notable South African media figures, artists, and former NBA stars such as Tracy McGrady. The guests illustrated the league's growing prestige and the significance of basketball as a unifier across African cultures and communities. Amadou Gallo Fall described the BAL as 'the culmination of decades of work' between the NBA and FIBA. Their goal is to provide African players with a clear pathway to develop their talent. 'We are grateful to the filmmakers for documenting the league's historic impact on lives and economies across the continent,' he said. The documentary not only highlights the league's sporting achievements but also explores its wider socio-economic influence. It touches on how basketball is building bridges between Africa and North America, fostering two-way opportunities for players and entrepreneurs alike. The series also features exclusive interviews with key figures such as former US President Barack Obama, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. NBA champion Pascal Siakam from Cameroon and South African-linked Grammy-winning artist and BAL player J. Cole will also make appearances. Richard Brown, the documentary's executive producer and co-director, expressed pride in telling stories that transcend basketball. 'From Dakar to Kigali and Lagos to Cairo, the BAL reflects the hopes of a dynamic generation of young Africans. It symbolises the continent's limitless potential.' For South Africa, a country with a rich sporting heritage and vibrant basketball culture, Origin promises to be a powerful testament to the continent's new sporting era. Origin: The Story of the Basketball Africa League presents a vivid, compelling portrait of African basketball's rise. It honours the passion and perseverance that built the BAL and positions South Africa as a key stage in its extraordinary journey. Casting on 'Youngins': Behind the scenes with Keneilwe Matidze
Showmax dropped the trailer for the much-anticipated Season 3 of the hit teen drama Youngins. The series has already set the record for the most first-day views on the African streaming platform since its relaunch. Youngins has been a joyful revelation in South African entertainment. It introduces fresh talent and opens doors for young stars like Ayakha Ntunja and Kealeboga Masango. They have both since found success in popular Mzansi Magic telenovelas Inimba and Genesis, according to Showmax Stories. The final season will begin streaming on Showmax from 19 September. To mark this exciting milestone, Keneilwe Matidze, the dynamic actress and casting director behind the show's vibrant cast, shared some insights. Keneilwe also plays Pearl, the lively Life Orientation teacher. Did she expect that Youngins would become such a success? 'Honestly, yes!' Keneilwe said. 'The energy during auditions was electric. Kids showed up from 8 am to 8 pm, and even after long hours, we were all dancing together outside. That vibe was infectious. I thought, 'If I were watching, I'd be hooked!' The talent was off the charts, and the story promised something special.' One standout fan favourite on ' Youngins ' is Tumelo, played by Lebogang Lephotsoana. Keneilwe described Lebo as a 'triple threat who could act, sing, and dance.' She said, 'Lebo was always full of life and positivity. Tumelo is the glue in the friendship group, and Lebo fits that role naturally. He's collaborative and contagious with his energy. He even helped me keep up with TikTok slang and dance moves!' Another cast member making waves on 'Youngins' is Thabiso Ramotshela, who plays Mahlatse. He brought great emotional depth, especially in Season 2. Keneilwe praised his dedication: 'Thabiso dug deep to connect viewers with Mahlatse's raw, emotional story. He pushed himself so hard that I worried about him at times, but his commitment made the character's journey authentic and relatable.' The show's supporting cast also shines. Tshepo Matlala, who plays Tshepo, brings humour and heart. According to Keneilwe, 'Tshepo uses his whole body to perform and taught me so much. We rehearsed off-set and found ways to elevate scenes beyond the script. He's always surprising me with fresh energy.' Youngins is also celebrated for its authentic queer representation. Keneilwe explained, 'We worked hard on chemistry tests for Tabile Tau (Sefako) and Lebogang (Tumelo). Intimacy on screen is tough regardless of sexuality, but these two were open, comfortable, and committed to telling the story honestly. Their friendship and professionalism carried the scenes.' The cast's chemistry extends off-screen, too. Keneilwe shared a touching story about Katlego Moloke, who plays Alex and came out during his audition. 'He said, 'Yeah, but Tumelo is gay, and I'm gay.' That humbled me and showed how much South Africa has changed,' she said. 'Katlego shaped the Alex character in ways I hadn't imagined.' Showmax viewers can catch the final season's thrilling conclusion from 19 September, with three new episodes dropping weekly. Meanwhile, Seasons 1 and 2 remain available to rewatch on Showmax, and Season 1 airs on Mzansi Wethu, DStv Channel 163, every Wednesday to Friday at 19:00.
