The Woman Who Made Bollywood Dance, Tricked Into Marriage At 13, Forced To Convert To Islam
Today, no Bollywood film seems complete without lively songs and elaborate dance sequences. Directors such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sooraj Barjatya are renowned for their grand sets and opulent choreography. However, long before these visual spectacles became the norm, Saroj Khan brought dance choreography into the limelight and gave it the respect it deserved. At a time when choreographers were often overlooked, she carved a niche for herself and redefined Bollywood dance. Her journey, however, was anything but easy.
Fondly remembered as 'Masterji', Saroj Khan trained some of Bollywood's biggest stars, from Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit to Karisma Kapoor. Her own life, however, was marked by hardship. Before she was born, her family fled Pakistan during the Partition and settled in India. Their financial condition deteriorated after migration, and Saroj lost her father at a young age.
In a BBC interview, Saroj once shared how her family often went to bed hungry. Her mother would place empty pots on the stove to pretend she was cooking, just so the children would fall asleep peacefully.
Worked As Child Artist
Saroj began working early to support her family. In a 2016 interview on Doordarshan's show Koshish Se Kamyaabi Tak, she shared that she had to earn to feed her family, educate her siblings, and even arrange their marriages. She worked as a child artist in films, but by the time she turned ten, the offers stopped coming. She was no longer considered a child actor, nor old enough for adult roles.
Early Marriage
At just 13, she married 43-year-old Sohanlal, a much older man who was already married with four children. Saroj had met him during her early years as a background dancer. He misled the young Saroj and convinced her to marry him. She later gave birth to a daughter who died shortly after birth and had another child with him.
It was only later that Saroj Khan discovered Sohanlal's first marriage and his children. She spoke about this painful chapter during an interview with DD, sharing that he refused to acknowledge their marriage publicly. Upon learning the truth, she decided to part ways with him.
In 1975, Saroj married Sardar Roshan Khan. Before their marriage, she made it clear that he would have to accept her children as his own. Sardar Khan already had four children, and with Saroj Khan, he had two more. Born as Saroj Kishan Chand Sadhu Singh Nagpal, she converted from Sindhi Punjabi to Islam before marrying Roshan Khan.
Saroj once said she felt a deep spiritual connection when her daughter appeared in her dreams, calling her into a mosque. She had a daughter named Kuku with Sohanlal, who sadly passed away in 2011.

'Mujhe Daant Padi': Amitabh Bachchan Scolded Rajiv Rai For Making Kajol The Killer In Gupt
Director Rajiv Rai recalls Amitabh Bachchan scolding him for making Kajol the killer in Gupt. Director Rajiv Rai's 1997 thriller Gupt left a generation stunned with its shocking twist — Kajol, the film's beloved heroine, was revealed to be the murderer. The bold move to cast a female lead as the villain was considered groundbreaking in Hindi cinema at the time. But not everyone was on board with this twist — including none other than Amitabh Bachchan, who personally questioned Rai's decision ahead of the film's release. In a recent interview on the Ravi Buleiy Official YouTube channel, Rajiv Rai shared a fascinating anecdote about a trial screening of Gupt held in Chennai. Amitabh Bachchan had attended the show and called Rai the very next day. 'He said, 'Rajiv, are you convinced with what you have done in this film? You have made Kajol the killer, are you sure? How can you be so sure?' So in one way, as a senior, he scolded me," Rai said. 'Mere ko daant padi. He is a senior, he can obviously scold me." Rajiv went on to explain that despite Bachchan's doubts, he stood firm in his creative vision, 'He questioned me, 'How are you so confident that this will work?' I told him, 'Sir, I don't have an answer for your questions. It is Wednesday already, please wait for 2 days, you will get your answer.'" As history would have it, Gupt opened to critical and commercial success, and Kajol's performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Villain, becoming the first actress to win in that category. Rajiv Rai also recalled his early professional ties to Amitabh Bachchan, having worked as an assistant director on classic films like Trishul and Kaala Patthar, both of which starred the megastar. He revealed that during a challenging phase in Bachchan's career — between 1992 and 1994 — he developed a script with Anees Bazmee specifically for the legendary actor. Despite Rai's high hopes, Bachchan declined the project, 'He said that the phase that I am going through right now, I don't want to do any films. He was not going through a good phase then," Rai said. 'He was confused, and in that confusion, he said no. He is not a confused man but his circumstances were such." The rejection left Rai heartbroken, 'I was like, 'I worked so hard, I was angry with my destiny, not with Amitabh Bachchan. I thought if destiny does not want me to work with Amit ji, I will work with someone new, so I made Mohra with Suniel Shetty." That decision turned out to be career-defining. Mohra, released in 1994, was a major hit, and along with Gupt, cemented Rai's legacy as one of the most daring and successful directors of 1990s Bollywood. Kelly Osbourne has broken her silence following the recent death of her dad, Ozzy Osbourne. Kelly Osbourne has lost her 'best friend" following the death of her dad Ozzy Osbourne. The 40-year-old star has taken to social media to share her thoughts following Ozzy's passing on Tuesday (22.07.25), aged 76. Kelly – who released a cover of the Black Sabbath song Changes with her dad back in 2003 – wrote on Instagram: 'I feel unhappy I am so sad. I lost the best friend I ever had. (sic)" Ozzy performed his last-ever concert at Villa Park in Birmingham earlier this month, and Kelly actually got engaged backstage to Sid Wilson, from the band Slipknot, at the star-studded event. The Back to the Beginning concert also featured appearances from the likes of Metallica, Yungblud and Guns N' Roses. Ozzy's death was announced by his family earlier this week. They said in a statement: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love." The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Ozzy's Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi. He told BBC Radio 4's Today: 'He loved what he did, he loved music, he loved playing together, and I'm so glad we had the opportunity of getting together again to do the [farewell] show. 'It was brilliant being with all the guys again, and the atmosphere, and it was brilliant for Ozzy because he really wanted to do that, he felt at home there and it was good for all of us." Kiss frontman Gene Simmons also paid a glowing tribute to the late star, describing Ozzy as a 'unique, loveable person". Gene, 75, told the BBC: 'I know that, right now, millions of fans around the world are crying and shocked, and my heart goes out to Sharon and the family and the fans. 'There were no airs about him – he's met kings queens, political leaders, I think it's fair to say there was never an Ozzy Osbourne before Ozzy, and there will be another Ozzy. He was a unique, loveable person." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
