Panel for fixation of fares for Metro 2A & 7 proposed
The move, approved by the Authority, is a procedural requirement and it does not imply any immediate fare revision, officials clarified.
According to the law, the Central government can constitute a three-member committee, chaired by a sitting or retired high court judge, to review and recommend metro fares. The state and Centre nominate one member each to the panel, both of whom must be senior officials or ex-bureaucrats of at least 'additional secretary' rank.
Currently, Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali) are operated by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL). Both corridors saw weekday ridership touch 2.65 lakh since services began on April 2, 2022.
"Setting up the fare fixation committee is a legal obligation to ensure transparency in fare governance. It's part of the compliance process and not a sign of imminent fare hikes," said an MMRDA official.
Once the state govt clears the proposal, it will be forwarded to the Centre for formal constitution of the committee.

Choice should guide language policy for schools
The Tamil Nadu State Education Policy promises to 'build an inclusive, equitable, resilient, and future-ready school education'. It has backed the intent with radical initiatives and necessary funds: The state budget (2024–25) has earmarked a total of ₹44,042 crore for school education, which is 13.7% of the total state expenditure, among the highest in the country. The state, which pioneered mid-day meals in schools, now offers breakfast as well. The outcomes reveal their impact: The gross enrolment ratio is close to or above 95% at the primary, upper primary and secondary levels, with the retention rate exceeding 97%. Outreach initiatives and infrastructure interventions such as digital classrooms and science labs have helped to augment learning outcomes, especially among students from disadvantaged communities and homes. The focussed investment in school education, similar to the trajectory followed by South East Asian countries, has helped Tamil Nadu emerge as an industrial powerhouse. What, however, stands apart in this focussed push to improve educational standards is the government's language policy. Tamil Nadu has argued for a two-language formula, fearing that the Centre's backing for a three-language policy is merely a camouflage for Hindi imposition. Linguistic pride has been central to Tamil identity, and the Dravidian parties have historically been vigilant against attempts to privilege Hindi over other Indian languages. That said, the state needs to ask if it should reformulate its stand to offer more choices to its students. No language should be imposed on students; neither should a government limit the linguistic options available to students. And science, not political rhetoric and pride, must guide language policy. A rational policy could opt for a three-language policy — evidence suggests that children are quick to learn languages early. In the case of Tamil Nadu, the third language need not necessarily be Hindi; a bouquet of options, including other Dravidian languages and foreign languages, could be offered. A more liberal language policy will make Tamil Nadu's progressive education policy even better.

Centre has failed to curb terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir: Pawan Khera
Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday (August 10, 2025) accused the BJP-led Centre of not being able to curb terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and instead indulging in "jugglery of words". Participating in a chain hunger strike called by the Pradesh Congress Committee to demand Jammu and Kashmir's statehood restoration, Mr. Khera was replying to a question on the ongoing anti-terror operation in Kulgam. "In 2016, we were promised that terrorism would end after demonetisation. Do not go by their promises... they do not know how to run the government. They only know the jugglery of words," Mr. Khera told reporters in Srinagar. "There will be a new drama every day to divert our and your attention. The reality is that the PM is neither able to run the government now, nor will he be able to in future," Mr. Khera told reporters in Srinagar. At least two army personnel were killed while nine were injured in an encounter in the Akhal forest area of Kulgam, which entered its 10th day on Sunday (August 10, 2025) as security forces tried to squeeze the cordon around the terrorists. Two terrorists have also been killed in the operation launched on August 1. Mr. Khera said more powers reside with the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir than with the elected government. 'If the UT set up continues, there are too many compulsions. One has to work very hard as the hands are tied,' he said. Asked about the killing of the Pahalgam attackers in an encounter with security forces, Mr. Khera said the government should tell the nation how the attackers came in. "They have been killed is a different thing, but how did they come? Tell us that. And how many more are still around?" he said. When asked about the steep hike in tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Indian goods, Mr. Khera said President Donald Trump thinks that India is a weak country. "He looks at Modi and thinks that Modi is India. India is way bigger than Modi; it is a power. If anyone has shown the true power of India to the U.S., it was Indira Gandhi in 1971. Trump should understand that India's power is a different thing, and Modi is the PM. There have been several PMs before him and there will be more after him," he said. The Congress leader said the foreign policy of the present government was a failure, as no nation publicly supported India after the Pahalgam attack or during Operation Sindoor. "Tell me one nation that stood by India and said 'Pakistan did wrong'... If your neighbours, like Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, are against you, what kind of foreign policy is that? There are two superpowers right now — America and China. Both are working against you, and Pakistan is taking advantage of both," he said.

As PM Modi Inaugurates Namma Metro, Karnataka Govt Highlights Contribution Hinting At Credit War
BENGALURU: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said on Sunday that the state's contribution to Bengaluru's Namma Metro was 80 per cent while that of the Centre was only 20 per cent. Speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence, he said, "I will appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide at least Rs 1 lakh crore for Bengaluru. The Centre was supposed to bear 50 per cent of the land acquisition cost for the Metro project but it hasn't given. However, we completed the project in the interest of the city. Though Bengaluru is the second highest tax contributor, it gets very little in return." "Ahmedabad is given 20 per cent of the tax devolution while Bengaluru gets only 10 per cent. Bengaluru needs to be treated on par with other large cities in the country like Delhi. We are not doing politics over this, we are only appealing," Shivakumar added. BJP hasn't brought even Rs 10 as funds for Karnataka, he chided. "BJP claims it has done everything. No BJP MP has even got Rs 10 as funds for Bengaluru. They should be ashamed of themselves. The Union Jal Shakti Minister has been responsive at times to our requests. Even MGNREGA funds haven't been released," the Deputy Chief Minister said. "Some BJP MPs think that tweeting and media coverage amounts to achievement. MPs must keep aside politics and PR and work for the welfare of the people," he said, while lashing out at the BJP MPs from the city. "The Centre has completely neglected Karnataka and hasn't released any funds. We have invited the Prime Minister out of respect for the post. We have implemented innovative double-decker project which can be a model for other Metros," he added. "Bengaluru generates one lakh new IT jobs every year. The Metro Yellow line will benefit the IT corridor. Electronic City flyover was also completed at the time of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," Shivakumar told. Asked about BJP's comments that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's contribution to Metro phase 2 and 3, the Deputy Chief Minister said, "There is no contribution. All this started during former Chief Minister late S.M. Krishna and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure. Let them (Union government) release the data on their contribution, I will release the numbers too." "I would like to thank Infosys Delta, Biocon and other companies, who contributed to building the Metro Yellow line stations," Shivakumar concluded.
