Panel for fixation of fares for Metro 2A & 7 proposed
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed setting up a fare fixation committee (FFC) for Metro Lines 2A and 7 — a statutory step under the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002.
The move, approved by the Authority, is a procedural requirement and it does not imply any immediate fare revision, officials clarified.
According to the law, the Central government can constitute a three-member committee, chaired by a sitting or retired high court judge, to review and recommend metro fares. The state and Centre nominate one member each to the panel, both of whom must be senior officials or ex-bureaucrats of at least 'additional secretary' rank.
Currently, Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali) are operated by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL). Both corridors saw weekday ridership touch 2.65 lakh since services began on April 2, 2022.
"Setting up the fare fixation committee is a legal obligation to ensure transparency in fare governance. It's part of the compliance process and not a sign of imminent fare hikes," said an MMRDA official.
Once the state govt clears the proposal, it will be forwarded to the Centre for formal constitution of the committee.

Centre hands over probe into Suhas Shetty murder to NIA
The Union Home Ministry on Saturday, June 7, handed over the investigation into the murder of 30-year-old Suhas Shetty, a Hindutva activist and accused in two murder cases, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), considering the 'the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy'. It said, 'The Central government has received information regarding registration of FIR no. 0080/2025 dated 01.05.2025 by the Karnataka police at Bajpe police station in Mangaluru city, Karnataka, under sections 189(4), 191(2), 191(3), 126(2), 109, 118(1), 103(1), 61(1), 62, 351(2), 351(3), 190 of the BNS, 2023, and sections 3(1), 25 of the Arms Act, 1959, pertaining to attack on one Suhas Shetty on 01.05.2025 while he was travelling in a car along with a few others, by one Safwan with eight other persons, and the attack resulted in critical injuries to Suhas Shetty and others, and he subsequently succumbed to them in a hospital.' In this case, the Ministry said, sections 10 read with 41, 13, 15, 17, 18, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, dealing with unlawful associations and terrorist activities, were attracted. The case relates to the targeted killing of an individual in public view with the intention to create terror in the minds of people, and the accused persons involved in the case were allegedly members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), an unlawful association. In view of the circumstances mentioned, the Central government was of the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, had been committed in the instant case and having regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it was required to be investigated by the NIA. The Ministry directed the NIA to take up the investigation into the case in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the NIA Act. On the night of May 1, Shetty, who was travelling along with his associates, was chased and hacked to death in full public view by a group of people in Bajpe town. The victim was the main accused in the murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Katipalla-Surathkal, who was killed in front of a shop in Surathkal on July 28, 2022. Fazil was murdered two days after the killing of BJP activist Praveen Nettaru at Bellare in Sullia taluk on July 26, 2022. The Bajpe police have so far arrested 11 persons in the Shetty murder case.

Maha: Fadnavis releases entrepreneur Dr Chaudhary's book in Pune
Pune, June 8 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday released Dr Pramod Chaudhary's book, "Pailatiravarun... Tar As Zhaal", which chronicles the latter's entrepreneurial journey. Speaking at the book release ceremony held at auditorium of COEP Technological University, the Chief Minister praised Dr Chaudhary's work in the ethanol sector, describing it as a form of national service by a visionary entrepreneur. He recalled that when the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government was at the Centre, the initiative to increase the ethanol blending percentage had begun, however, in the midst the Vajpayee government left office, causing the topic to be put on the backburner and delaying the ethanol mission. After the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014, the ethanol topic gained momentum again, he said and pointed that Dr Chaudhary reviewed the ethanol policy, provided suggestions that were incorporated into it and since 2017-18, progress has accelerated. He noted that blending 20 percent ethanol with petrol has resulted in savings of over Rs one lakh crore in foreign exchange and informed that ethanol is being used in aviation fuel and predicted that vehicles will run on biofuels in the future. Fadnavis highlighted the potential for creating a policy to make current plastics biodegradable, which could lead to the development of industries based on this technology. He mentioned that Dr Chaudhary had prepared a report on creating a Compressed Biogas (CBG) project using agricultural waste, rice waste and Mahua flower waste in Gadchiroli. At Madurai event, Amit Shah apologises for not knowing Tamil: ‘One of the greatest languages of India'
Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday, during a speech in Madurai, described Tamil as one of the greatest languages of India and extended an apology for not being able to convey his message in the language. Addressing workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madurai, Shah began his speech by apologising for not being able to speak 'one of the greatest languages of India'. "...I apologise to the party workers of Tamil Nadu as I cannot talk to them in one of the greatest languages of India, Tamil..." Shah said. He also assured the BJP workers that the ruling DMK will be defeated in 2026 polls and an NDA government of the BJP-AIADMK would form. "The NDA government of the BJP-AIADMK alliance will be formed here in 2026. I live in Delhi, but my ears are always on Tamil Nadu. MK Stalin says that Amit Shah cannot defeat DMK. He is right. It's not me, but the people of Tamil Nadu will defeat you," he said. Amit Shah's remarks about Tamil come amid a language war with the MK Stalin-led state government, which accused Centre of Hindi imposition through the proposed three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP). The NEP issue sparked an intense row between the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government in March this year. Chief minister MK Stalin and Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan had trained guns at each other for weeks over the implementation of NEP in the state, with the former claiming that Centre was holding funds as a form of blackmail. Stalin, who heads the DMK, also said that the Union government was sowing the seeds of another language war and that Tamil Nadu was ready for it. Language has long been an emotive issue for the state that was rocked by anti-Hindi agitation in the 1960s. On the other hand, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan had stressed that the National Education Policy 'upholds the principle of linguistic freedom' and 'does not advocate the imposition of any language' on states. Pradhan had also appealed to him to not 'politicise education' and 'rise above political differences'.
