Supreme Court allows Rekha Gupta-led Delhi govt to withdraw all 7 cases filed by erstwhile AAP govt against LG
The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the BJP-led government in Delhi to withdraw all the seven petitions filed by the erstwhile AAP government against the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory.
The AAP-led Delhi government had earlier filed as many as seven cases against the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) over issues including the control over services in the national capital.
On Thursday, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh directed to list the application filed by the BJP-led Delhi government for Maty 23.
The seven cases filed by the AAP government challenged the LG's authority on various boards, including solid waste management, Yamuna cleaning and against the validity of Acts and ordinances.
'These matters should not trouble this court anymore,' Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati said on behalf of the Delhi government.
In July 2023, the top court sought a reply from the Centre over the then AAP-led government's plea challenging the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) (Amendment) Act, 2023.
The Act, which was initially an ordinance, created an authority for transfer and posting of Group-A officers in Delhi. It had come a week after the SC handed over the control of services in Delhi excluding police, public order and land to the elected government.
Another case that was sought to be withdrawn is against a decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which was stayed in July 2023 by the top court.
The NGT order of January 19, 2023 asked the LG to head a high-level committee constituted to deal with issues concerning the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River.
Among other cases that were sought to be withdrawn is the challenge to the alleged non-release of sanctioned funds for the Delhi Jal Board for the financial year 2023-2025 by the Finance Department of GNCTD, re-declaration that the LG of Delhi is bound by the aid and advice of the council of ministers of the GNCTD and directions for appointment of the chairperson of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).
The Delhi government has also sought to withdraw the challenge to orders issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the LG with respect to release of payments to advocates appointed by the ministers without the concurrence of the LG of Delhi and the appointment of advocates on record (AoRs) and advocates in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.

'Completely absurd': ECI debunks Rahul Gandhi's 'match fixing' allegation; Gandhi called Maharashtra election rigged
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar (left) and Rahul Gandhi. (Photo/Agencies) NEW DELHI: The election commission of India (ECI) on Saturday refuted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi 's claim of "match-fixing" in elections, calling the allegations "completely absurd." While putting a point wise rebuttal of Congress MP's claims, the ECI said, "The entire nation is aware that each election process including the preparation of electoral rolls, polling and counting etc. are all held by Government staff and that too in the presence of authorised representatives formally appointed by Political Parties/ Candidates from polling station upto constituency level." The top poll body added in its statement, "Any misinformation being spread, by anyone, is not only a sign of disrespect towards Law, but also brings disrepute to the thousands of representatives appointed by their own political party and demotivates lakhs of election staff who work untiringly and transparently during elections." "After any unfavourable verdict by the voters, trying to defame the Election Commission by saying that it is compromised, is completely absurd," the statement by ECI read. Earlier in the day, the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha outlined the alleged electoral irregularities in a stepwise manner — fake voters are added, voter turnout is inflated, bogus voting is facilitated, and evidence is subsequently hidde "How to steal an election? Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024 were a blueprint for rigging democracy," Gandhi said while sharing an article written by him. "My article shows how this happened, step by step: Step 1: Rig the panel for appointing the Election Commission. Step 2: Add fake voters to the roll. Step 3: Inflate voter turnout. Step 4: Target the bogus voting exactly where BJP needs to win. Step 5: Hide the evidence," Gandhi wrote. "It's not hard to see why the BJP was so desperate in Maharashtra. But rigging is like match-fixing - the side that cheats might win the game, but damages institutions and destroys public faith in the result. All concerned Indians must see the evidence. Judge for themselves. Demand answers," Gandhi said. "Because the match-fixing of Maharashtra will come to Bihar next, and then anywhere the BJP is losing," the leader of opposition claimed in his post. Debunking Gandhi's allegations, the ECI said in its statement, "Electoral Rolls in India, including Maharashtra, are prepared as per the Representation of People Act, 1950 and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. As per law, either just before the elections and/or once every year, Special Summary Revision of the Electoral Rolls is conducted and a final copy of the Electoral Rolls is handed over to all the National/State political parties, including Indian National Congress (INC)." The ECI statement further read, "After the finalisation of these Electoral Rolls during Maharashtra elections, as against 9,77,90,752 Electors, only a total of 89 appeals were filed before the 1st appellate authority (DM) and only 1 appeal was filed before the 2nd appellate authority (CEO). Therefore, it is amply clear that there was no grievance of INC or any other political parties before the conduct of Maharashtra Assembly Elections in 2024. "

Citing CAG data, Jagan claims Andhra's fiscal performance indicates 'distress'
CM Jagan Mohan Reddy (File Photo) YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday cited the CAG's data for the month of April and claimed Andhra Pradesh's fiscal performance indicates 'distress'.The former chief minister noted that the figures released by CAG for the month of the April 2025 convey the 'real picture'."The State GST revenues for the first month of this financial year (April 2025) demonstrated contraction to the tune of 24.20 percent, when compared to the April 2024," he said in a post on 'X'. Though the TDP-led NDA government on May 1 proclaimed that net GST collection of the state government for the month of April 2025 had been the 'highest' since the introduction of GST at Rs 3,354 crore, Reddy said technically net GST will be subsequent to all adjustments. As soon as the CAG figures have become public, the government 'mischievously' issues one more press release suggesting that even in May month the GST revenues were at record high, he alleged. "In this press release they mention that, in April, 2025, the Central Government deducted Rs 796 crores on account of adjustment of advance apportionment from IGST (integrated GST), so GST revenues have come down," said to the opposition leader, advance apportionment of IGST is accounted for under minor head 110 and is part of SGST (state GST) under major head 0006 of government said this is a regular process and net GST revenues would be arrived at after accounting for all these adjustments, and added that it was the case in the previous years as well."The May 1 press release says that net GST collection is Rs 3,354 crore for April 2025. Now, they (govt) say that Rs 796 crore is adjusted. One can clearly understand that this is nothing but a cover up after truth about the GST revenue is brought to light by the CAG," said Reddy. Further, the opposition leader observed that quite contrary to what the NDA alliance government had suggested, the figures released by CAG indicate that the 'trend of economic sluggishness' is more pronounced in April with the tax revenues dropping by 12.21 percent and non-tax revenues registering a fall of 22 percent when compared to April 2024. If the state's own revenues are taken into consideration, Reddy said, the fall over the previous year is 12.76 percent, indicating a 'very gloomy picture'. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP.
