Three SC corrections officers plead guilty to drug trafficking and misconduct
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) – Three former South Carolina Department of Corrections employees have pleaded guilty to trafficking and distributing drugs within prisons.
37-year-old Kevin Leroy Howard pleaded guilty to trafficking methamphetamines, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, misconduct in office, and providing contraband to inmates, according to the South Carolina Attorney General's Office. Howard was a correctional officer at Tyger River Correctional Institution, and was initially arrested July 2023 after he was caught bringing cylinders filled with drugs into the department. Howard was sentenced to a total of four years in prison.
In a separate case, two other corrections officers pleaded guilty to misconduct in the office, and allowing contraband to enter the institution. These officers were identified as Lieutenant Dontai D. Park and Sergeant Brandon C. Taylor at McCormick Correctional Institution. Both officers were sentenced to seven years in prison, and have been banned from seeking employment as law enforcement.
These cases were part of the state's 'Gatekeeper' investigation.

Officials: 30 arrested, 30 pounds of drugs seized in ‘Operation Uptown Funk'
HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – More than 30 people across western North Carolina and in the Upstate have been arrested as part of an investigation into drug trafficking. The sheriff's office said the duo were responsible for distributing drugs around Hendersonville and the surrounding areas, resulting in multiple overdoses. The sheriff's office said detectives investigated numerous drug overdoses to track what it called a 'far-reaching' drug network. On May 28, detectives executed 10 search warrants in Henderson, Buncombe and Greenville counties, finding 'trafficking levels' of cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl. In total, more than 30 people from Henderson County have been arrested in connection with the investigation. Suspect wanted in deadly Anderson shooting
ANDERSON, S.C. (WSPA) – Police have identified a suspect in a shooting which left one person dead at an apartment complex in Anderson. According to Anderson Police Chief Jim Stewart, an arrest warrant has been signed for Tyshun Kyreem Lomax for the murder of Kevin Edwards at Jefferson Apartments. According to Anderson Police Department and Anderson County Coroner's Office, Edwards was injured Friday evening in a shooting at Jefferson Apartments on Jefferson Avenue. Edwards was taken to AnMed where he later died from his injuries. His death was ruled a homicide. Police are also continuing to investigate a separate shooting which happened a few minutes later on Caughlin Avenue. The victim in that shooting remains in intensive care. Police arrest wanted man on gun, drug charges in Asheville
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – A wanted man was arrested Saturday morning while police conducted proactive efforts in Asheville. The Asheville Police Department said 37-year-old Brandon Norrelle Miller was a wanted felon who was taken into custody Saturday while officers conducted proactive efforts near the 100 block of Atkinson Street. According to reports, officers saw Miller in possession of an AR pistol and made contact. Police said Miller was arrested without incident but, during the arrest, was found to be in possession of a firearm and drugs. Miller has been arrested and charged with the following: Firearm by felon Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, deliver schedule IV Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, deliver within 1,000 feet of a school Going armed to the terror of the public Carrying concealed gun Second degree trespass Miller was also served a warrant on the felony charge of flee to elude.
