Malaysia to sign UN cybercrime convention in October 2025
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that through this convention, the country will be able to strengthen cooperation in investigations, the exchange of digital evidence, extradition of cybercriminals, as well as information and intelligence sharing with international police agencies such as Interpol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
'Assuming there are no problems, we will sign (the UN convention) in October in Vietnam,' he said during Question Time.
Saifuddin said this in reply to Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar), who wanted to know the number of cybercrime cases reported throughout 2024 and the ministry's efforts to enhance digital security for the public. - Bernama

MCBA denies entry to over 10,000 travellers at KLIA in first half of 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) denied entry to 10,678 travellers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) during the first six months of this year. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the travellers did not meet entry requirements and were issued notices of refusal. "Through integrated monitoring and enforcement actions from January to June, MCBA at KLIA successfully denied entry to 10,678 travellers who did not fulfil the conditions to enter the country," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to Datuk Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh (PN–Pasir Puteh), who asked about measures being taken to safeguard national borders and the early outcomes of the newly established agency. Saifuddin said MCBA has shown promising enforcement outcomes since its establishment on Jan 1. Between January and June, authorities also recorded seizures of prohibited and unlicensed goods estimated to be worth RM1.7 million. "All cases were referred to the relevant enforcement agencies for investigation and prosecution according to their respective jurisdictions," he added. He added that MCBA has also improved the standardisation of case reporting and referral processes, particularly in the coordination of documentation and the transfer of exhibits to enforcement agencies. "This is in line with efforts to expedite inter-agency enforcement actions and investigations," he said. He said the agency has also enhanced efficiency in case profiling and preliminary intelligence gathering by using operational data to identify offence patterns, suspect profiles, and high-risk routes. MCBA plans to develop more comprehensive investigative capabilities over the next two to three years. "This includes the proposed creation of permanent investigator positions, development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), and integrated training programmes. "Apart from these operational and enforcement aspects, the Home Ministry believes that the positive impact of MCBA's operations, which only began on Jan 1, will become more evident in the medium and long term," he said.

Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea urged all countries, specifically naming China, to stop exports to Russia of dual-use goods that Washington says contribute to Russia's war industrial base and enable its drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. 'Beijing's claim to have implemented strong export controls on dual-use goods falls apart in the face of the daily recovery of Chinese-produced components in the drones, weapons, and vehicles that Russia uses against Ukraine,' Shea told a meeting of the 15-member UN Security Council on Ukraine. China did not start the war in Ukraine, is not a party to the conflict, has never provided lethal weapons, and has always 'strictly controlled dual-use materials, including the export of drones', China's deputy UN ambassador Geng Shuang responded. 'We urge the US to stop shifting blame on the Ukraine issue or creating confrontation and instead play a more constructive role in promoting ceasefire and peace talks,' he told the council. Reuters reported on Wednesday that Chinese-made engines are being covertly shipped via front companies to a state-owned drone manufacturer in Russia, labelled as 'industrial refrigeration units' to avoid detection in the wake of Western sanctions. 'If China is sincere in calling for peace, it should stop fuelling Russia's aggression,' Shea said.

139 M'sians stranded abroad due to job scams, Parliament told
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 139 Malaysians remained stranded at various job scam syndicates abroad in Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and several other countries, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that this figure covers the period from 2021 to July 4 this year, where the police have received a total of 518 police reports, involving 672 Malaysians who are stranded abroad due to job scams. 'Out of this figure, 533 (79%) individuals were saved, and 139 (21%) are still stranded, especially in Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and other countries,' said Saifuddin in a parliamentary written reply on Tuesday (July 29). Of the 533 Malaysians rescued, 431 (81%) were male, while 102 (19%) were female, said Saifuddin. Based on age breakdown, Saifuddin said 517 individuals (91%) from those who were rescued are adults above 18-years-old, consisting of 422 males and 95 females. 'The remaining 16 victims (3%) are children below 18-years-old, consisting of nine males and seven females,' added Saifuddin. According to Saifuddin, Johor has the highest number of rescued victims, with 113 (21.2%) individuals, followed by Selangor's 112 (21%), and Sarawak's 92 (17%). 'The Home Ministry is committed to strengthening cooperation between agencies and to expand rescue operations and to raise public awareness so that Malaysians will be protected from being a job scam victim abroad. 'All information, complaints and cooperation with the public, NGOs, diplomatic community and private agencies are much welcomed in our efforts to eliminate job scam syndicates abroad,' added Saifuddin.
