CIDCO charts multi-pronged strategy to meet Navi Mumbai water demand
The rapid transformation of Mumbai's satellite city, driven by large-scale infrastructure projects such as the
Navi Mumbai International Airport
(NMIA), the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), and Mass Housing schemes, is putting pressure on the region's water supply systems.
In response to this, CIDCO is executing a multi-source water supply strategy aimed at both immediate and long-term needs.

'As Navi Mumbai continues to grow and develop, our commitment to sustainable water management remains unwavering. With establishing the strong water supply network, we are not just meeting today's demands, we're building a resilient water infrastructure for tomorrow,' said Vijay Singhal, vice chairman and managing director, CIDCO.
To cater to the projected water demand of 1275 million litres per day (MLD) by 2050 in CIDCO and NAINA areas, the corporation is drawing from existing sources like Hetawane Dam, Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), while also developing new reservoirs such as Balganga and Kondhane dams.
Live Events
The proposed Kondhane Dam, located on the Ulhas River, is expected to be a major water source for the region. Initially planned to supply 250 MLD, it will later be scaled up to 350 MLD.
In view of the 4-5-year timeline for the Kondhane and Balganga projects, CIDCO has requested additional allocations from current sources. In August 2020, the Maharashtra government approved an additional quota of 120 MLD from Hetawane Dam for Rs. 119.80 crore, increasing CIDCO's total allocation from this source to 270 MLD.
To implement the increased supply, CIDCO appointed a consultant to augment the existing system. The Hetawane Water Supply Scheme augmentation, underway in four phases, is expected to be completed by June 2029. Current progress includes 41% completion of the water treatment plant, 8.5% of the raw water tunnel, and 25.7% of the pure water tunnel, CIDCO said.
The authority has also engaged leading project management consultancies to oversee water tunnel and treatment plant construction.
Once operational, the Hetawane and Kondhane initiatives will stabilize water supply to CIDCO's jurisdiction and the Panvel Municipal Corporation, playing a critical role in the
sustainability
of the region's urban expansion.

Cabinet nod for free bus travel for women
Vijayawada: The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved free bus travel for women across the state from August 15. Under the 'Stree Shakti' scheme, the government will provide free travel for women in nearly 75 per cent of the APSRTC's total operational fleet of 11,449 buses. The Cabinet also okayed the privatisation of 22 hotels and resorts of the AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) 'to improve service quality, operational efficiency, and revenue'. Other major decisions taken by the Cabinet, at its 27th e-meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu at the Secretariat, included approval of the AP Land Incentive for Tech Hub (LIFT) Policy (4.0) for 2024-2029, aimed at attracting major IT companies by offering them land at a subsidised rate of Rs 0.99 per acre across the state. Information & Public Relations, and Housing Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy announced the decisions made by the Cabinet approving important proposals, with focus on fulfilling the coalition government's promises. Parthasarathy said that contrary to reports that 'Stree Shakti' would be implemented only in select districts with limited fleet, women will be allowed to travel free in a total of 8,456 buses. The scheme is expected to cost the government Rs 1,942 crore annually, or approximately Rs 162 crore per month. Services such as Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express will offer free travel to women, benefiting approximately 2.62 crore women, girls, and transgender individuals annually. Each family could save up to Rs 1,000 per month through this initiative, the Minister said. Passengers will need to show an Aadhar, voter, or ration card as ID. The approval of the free bus travel scheme for women, aside from other significant schemes like NTR Bharosa and Thalliki Vandanam demonstrates the government's commitment to its promises, he observed. The Cabinet approved a proposal to select agencies to manage and operate 22 hotels and resorts of the APTDC. The corporation's properties will be divided into six clusters and handed over to private operators. The Cabinet also approved the cancellation of the land allotment to the Oberoi Group in Tirupati, following a request to this effect from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Board and concerns expressed by locals about the need to maintain the sanctity of Tirumala. The government will now facilitate a land swap with TTD for the AP Tourism Authority (APTA) land. The Cabinet has also given its nod for an amendment to the AP Excise (Grant of Licences) Rules to allow "permit rooms" (in-shop drinking facilities) at A4 liquor shops for the 2024-26 licence period. The new policy will allow these rooms for a licence fee of Rs 5-7.5 lakh, generating estimated additional revenue of Rs 256 crore annually.

Empowering rural women to become digital entrepreneurs
Tirupati: A transformative AI-powered app-driven digital e-commerce initiative, replicated and piloted in Kuppam, has enabled 93 rural women from self-help groups (SHGs) in the state to generate business worth Rs 15 lakh within just 90 days. The success is driven by AI-powered 'Meri Saheli' app, developed by Frontier Markets, as part of the newly launched 'She Leads Andhra' initiative in partnership with the Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA). The pilot programme replicates Frontier Markets' acclaimed previous initiative 'She Leads Bharat Udyam', backed by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. The previous initiative has already empowered more than 15,000 rural women across Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to become successful digital entrepreneurs. In Andhra Pradesh, the model has been tailored to address local needs through strategic collaboration with KADA. 'The initiative leverages the AI-driven Meri Saheli app to equip rural women with the tools to become digitally enabled storefront owners. It enables them to diversify and significantly elevate their incomes through digital commerce,' said KADA Project Director Vikas Marmat. The pilot in Kuppam was conceptualized during the World Economic Forum summit in Davos earlier this year when Frontier Markets founder Ajaita Shah (previously hailed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her contributions to rural entrepreneurship) met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Vikas Marmat. The meeting laid the foundation to replicate the success of 'She Leads Bharat' in Kuppam. After identifying aspirational women lacking digital infrastructure and economic stability, KADA helped select the initial cohort of SHG members. They were trained in digital entrepreneurship and integrated into the Meri saheli platform. Over two and a half months, the women transitioned to becoming micro-retailers with access to over 200 market partners and strong last-mile delivery support. Unlike the apps of conventional e-commerce platforms, Meri saheli caters specifically to tier-5 and tier-6 rural areas. It ensures access to essential goods at competitive prices, delivered directly to rural households, thereby enabling broader inclusion in digital commerce. During his visit to Kuppam on July 2, Chief Minister Naidu visited Kuppam and interacted with the SHG women involved in the project. He acknowledged the model's tangible success and expressed his intention to expand the program statewide. 'She Leads Andhra aims to empower 30,000 SHG women in its first phase to fully saturate Chittoor district, and 1 lakh women across the state over the next three years.
