MILWAUKEE — Pete Alonso and Darryl Strawberry. Darryl Strawberry and Pete Alonso. It has a nice ring to the current Mets first baseman.
A day after tying Strawberry's franchise record with his 252nd career homer, Alonso said his relationship with the former All-Star outfielder only adds to the magnitude of the achievement.

Strawberry has been a presence within the organization in recent seasons as a guest spring training instructor and club ambassador.
'The fact that we have an in-person, face-to-face relationship is awesome,' Alonso said Sunday before the Mets faced the Brewers. 'He's just one of those guys that means so much to this organization.'

Alonso, who left the clubhouse a night earlier before speaking to reporters — he had a family matter to which he needed to attend — said it was difficult for him in the moment to celebrate the historic clout, which occurred in the second inning, because the Mets had a game to win.
Ultimately, the team lost 7-4.

It was just the latest memorable home run for Alonso at American Family Field. Last year, his ninth-inning blast against Devin Williams lifted the Mets to victory in Game 3 of the National League wild-card series. And two years earlier he homered in this ballpark to help the Mets clinch a wild-card berth. The blast also helped Max Scherzer secure career victory No. 200.

'It's a great place to hit — I see the ball pretty well here,' Alonso said. 'I still think my second-favorite homer here was the three-run homer against Corbin Burnes that gave Max the win and it was our first time clinching a playoff spot in [six] years. My first favorite is obviously the playoff homer.'
Alonso was asked if he would have believed it if someone told him before his rookie season he would eventually catch Strawberry on the franchise's all-time homer list.

'If the circumstances allowed me, I would have [believed it],' Alonso said. 'For me it was all about staying healthy and playing as many games as possible and doing my part to help the team win.

'To say you are a franchise leader, it's special. Not many people get to see that. You have the runway to play here. I have been here seven years and with my game and skill set if you were to tell me that, it would be like, 'OK, yeah, sweet, checks out.''
Alonso, 30, said he could envision himself joining the 500-home run club before his career concludes.
'It's circumstantial, but if I stay healthy and perform, I can get there,' Alonso said. 'I would like to play until I am 40. I think if I stay healthy and continue to perform [500 homers] is reasonable.'

Phillies Predicted To Cut Ties With Versatile 30-Year-Old Despite Recent Surge
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are primed for a World Series push this season. They have as much talent as ever, with Kyle Schwarber leading the way on offense and Zack Wheeler leading the pitching staff. With a few injured stars set to return from the injured list in the near future, the Phillies could have a bit of a roster crunch in the coming weeks. FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Phillies would cut ties with (or potentially option) veteran utilityman Weston Wilson when Alec Bohm returns from injury. CINCINNATI, OHIO - AUGUST 11: Weston Wilson #37 of the Philadelphia Phillies hits an RBI double during the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on August 11, 2025 in Cincinnati,... CINCINNATI, OHIO - AUGUST 11: Weston Wilson #37 of the Philadelphia Phillies hits an RBI double during the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on August 11, 2025 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Edmundo Sosa #33 of the Philadelphia Phillies scores. More"Bohm will be the team's everyday third baseman when he returns, thus creating a platoon at second base with Edmundo Sosa and Bryson Stott, and creating a competition for who will platoon with Max Kepler in left field," Rotman wrote. "Both Otto Kemp and Weston Wilson have spent time in that role this season, and while Wilson has performed well since his recall after the All-Star break, it'd be tough for them to send Kemp back down to Triple-A. "Kemp's overall numbers might not be stellar, but he's slashing .268/.362/.463 with two of his four big league home runs against southpaws this season. His .825 OPS against lefties suggests he'd be an ideal platoon partner with Kepler, and Wilson simply hasn't outperformed him this season." It's more likely that the Phillies will option Wilson rather than designate him for assignment or release him. Still, Otto Kemp makes slightly more sense as a platoon option with Max Kepler, so it's more like the Phillies will keep Kemp rather than Wilson on the roster. It's going to be a tough decision to make, especially since Wilson has played well recently. If he can stay hot for the next few days, there's a chance it's Kemp who's demoted instead. Carlos Mendoza Makes Bold Frankie Montas Decision For Mets' Postseason Push
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets have been on quite a losing skid recently, and they desperately need to make a change. With starter Frankie Montas struggling tremendously this season, it quickly became clear that manager Carlos Mendoza couldn't continue to use him every fifth day. Montas has allowed four or more earned runs in four of his eight starts. Still, the Mets are 3-5 in games started by Montas. The righty's strikeout numbers aren't horrible, but his hits allowed are up, and he can't seem to keep the ball in the ballpark. As a result, Mendoza recently made the bold decision that the Mets were going to move the veteran pitcher to the bullpen, per Anthony DiComo of MLB. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 03: Frankie Montas #47 of the New York Mets looks on during the first inning against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field on August 03, 2025 in the... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 03: Frankie Montas #47 of the New York Mets looks on during the first inning against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field on August 03, 2025 in the Queens borough of New York City. MoreMontas has thrown out of the bullpen before. He's done so once for the Mets this year already. Before that, he hadn't pitched out of the bullpen since he did so one time with the New York Yankees in 2023. In 2017, Montas was strictly used out of the bullpen by the then-Oakland Athletics. Now, the righty will transition back as the Mets opt to replace him with a better option in the starting rotation. It's clear this is the right move to make. Montas isn't helping the Mets win games as a starter, and they need to find somebody who can. Rather than cut him, New York is giving him an opportunity to transition to the bullpen down the stretch to help the team win games. It could work, but with how poorly he's thrown this year, there's a chance he's shelled out of the bullpen, too. More MLB: Phillies Predicted To Demote Young Pitcher When Jose Alvarado Returns
