Abhimanyu Easwaran To Captain East Zone In Duleep Trophy, Riyan Parag Named As Deputy
Easwaran will replace Ishan Kishan as East Zone captain after the 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand was ruled out due to an injury.
Bengal batter Abhimanyu Easwaran will captain East Zone in their Duleep Trophy quarterfinal match against North Zone in Bengaluru from August 28 to 31 after Ishan Kishan was ruled out of the tournament opener due to an injury. According to a report in PTI on Monday, August 19, Easwaran, who was part of the Indian team in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England, will replace Kishan as captain, and Assam all-rounder Riyan Parag will be his deputy.
'Ishan has a few stitches on his hand after falling off an e-bike, and he is currently recovering at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru," a source close to Kishan told PTI.
'It's not serious, but as a precaution he has been advised to rest. He is expected to be fit for the India A squad for the two four-day fixtures at home against Australia next month."
Apart from Ishan, fast bowler Akash Deep will also miss the Duleep Trophy for East Zone.
Akash is yet to recuperate fully from a back injury that forced him to miss two Tests on the recent tour to England.
The 28-year-old has been replaced by Bihar's Mukhtar Hussain in the East Zone squad.
Bengal pacer Akash, who had an impressive series against England, taking 13 wickets, including a 10-wicket match haul at Birmingham and a maiden Test half-century in the fifth Test at the Oval, has informed the zonal selection committee of his unavailability as per medical advice.
He is currently going through rehabilitation at the CoE and is likely to return to action during the home Test series against the West Indies, beginning on October 2.
The Duleep Trophy will also see the return of veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami, who has featured in only one first-class match over the past two years, alongside pacer Mukesh Kumar.
East Zone squad: Abhimanyu Easwaran (C), Riyan Parag (VC), Sandeep Patnaik, Virat Singh, Denish Das, Sridam Paul, Sharandeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra (WK), Aasirwad Swain (WK), Utkarsh Singh, Manishi, Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, Mukhtar Hussain and Mohammed Shami.

Akash Deep, skipper Ishan Kishan to miss Duleep Trophy; Easwaran to lead East Zone
India pacer Akash Deep and wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan, the East Zone captain, will miss the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal match against North Zone as both the players are recovering from their respective injuries. The season-opening Duleep Trophy matches are scheduled to be held in the BCCI Centre of Excellence grounds in Bengaluru from August 28, but Akash is yet to recuperate fully from a back injury that forced him to miss two Tests on the recent tour to England. The 28-year-old has been replaced by Bihar's Mukhtar Hussain in the East Zone squad. Bengal pacer Akash, who had an impressive series against England taking 13 wickets, including a 10-wicket match-haul at Birmingham and a maiden Test half-century in the fifth Test at the Oval, has informed the zonal selection committee of his unavailability as per medical advice. He is currently going through rehabilitation at the CoE, and is likely to return to action during the home Test series against the West Indies, beginning from October 2. Meanwhile, Kishan is recovering from a hand injury. "Ishan has a few stitches on his hand after falling off an e-bike and he is currently recovering at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru," a source close to Kishan told PTI. "It's not serious, but as a precaution he has been advised to rest. He is expected to be fit for the India A squad for the two four-day fixtures at home against Australia next month." In his absence, Bengal top-order batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was part of India's five-Test tour to England, has been named the East Zone captain, while Assam all-rounder Riyan Parag will be his deputy. Kishan has been replaced in the squad by Odisha's Aashirwad Swain, even as Jharkhand's Kumar Kushagra is likely to be the first-choice wicketkeeper. Kishan was in contention as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant ahead of the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval. But multiple stitches following his e-bike accident had ruled him out as Tamil Nadu's N Jagadeesan was eventually drafted in as Pant's back-up. The Duleep Trophy will also see the return of veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami, who has featured in only one first-class match over the past two years, alongside pacer Mukesh Kumar. Revised East Zone squad Abhimanyu Easwaran (c), Riyan Parag (vc), Sandeep Patnaik, Virat Singh, Denish Das, Sridam Paul, Sharandeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra (wk), Aasirwad Swain (wk), Utkarsh Singh, Manishi, Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, Mukhtar Hussain and Mohammed Shami.

Kodagu supply line keeps K'taka going
Bengaluru: Kodagu has always been the cradle of Indian hockey. The district has produced several international players, including MP Ganesh, MM Somaya, SV Sunil and VR Raghunath, to name just a few. The Karnataka district has been a constant source of inspiration for future generations to continue to earn laurels for the state and country. No wonder that 11 players from Kodagu are part of Karnataka's 18-member squad in the ongoing Junior Men's National Championship in Jalandhar, Punjab. "It is a matter of pride for Kodagu, with so many players from the district featuring in the team. It is primarily because of the history and the legacy Kodagu players have created," coach Thanu Nanjappa told TOI. With one win and loss under their belt, Karnataka have advanced to the quarterfinals. Kodagu's Dhruva BS, who had played in the last Nationals, is leading the state side. "Right from the school level, hockey is popular in Kodagu. There are many competitions at various age levels. It allows young players a chance to showcase their talent," the 19-year-old Dhruva said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Vishwajith, another player from Kodagu, said: "Hockey has always been in our blood. Our family members are very supportive and they always motivate us, which keeps us going." The popularity of the sport in this district can also be attributed to the Kodava Hockey Festival, which has become integral to the community's culture. The competition within the community helps unite families and generations through the sport. It is unsurprising that youngsters from Kodagu travel to Bengaluru for trials, outnumbering people from other regions. Schools also play an important role in helping the budding talents hone their skills during the formative years. Impressive performances at the school level and in age-group competitions help them get selected to the sports hostels. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Focus shifts to shorter format for Gambhir and Co
CHENNAI: AS the senior men's selection committee meets on Tuesday to name the squad for the upcoming T20 Asia Cup, one of the key talking points will be that of the middle-order batting and wicketkeeper options. That apart, there might not be too many surprises as the Indian T20I team has been hitting the right notes since the World Cup triumph last year. From the time Gautam Gambhir took charge as the head coach, the Men in Blue has been a dynamic side in the shortest format. It is a team management that likes depth, prefers all-round options and left-right combinations. Despite the criticisms from the outside they have stuck to it and the results have been in their favour. However, with a World Cup title to defend in less than six months, Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will be looking at the roadmap towards the global event in February next year. The first step for that would be the upcoming Asia Cup to be played in United Arab Emirates.
